After being at a wonderful small hotel and then traveling in the countryside, my 12 year old daughter and I returned to Paris for a grand finale at Le Meurice for a couple of nights at New Year's Eve. It was important to me that we choose a hotel that was a classic representation of Paris. This hotel does not disappoint. From the moment we stepped onto the sidewalk from our car, we were welcomed and cared for. We had arrived hours before check-in, but the hotel was ready and expecting us, and prepared to entertain my daughter while I did a Clignancourt shopping trip. The staff were so warm and gracious. When I returned from shopping, a team of staff members helped us to move into our room. For anyone who is afraid of the so-called rude Parisian stereotype, you will not find it here. We had a mid-tier room, with a very comfortable bed, acres of beautiful marble in the bathroom, wonderful towels and linens, and absolutely no view to speak of. By the end of a day sightseeing in Paris, I was not in need of any view! I was in need of tea and sustenance at Le Dali, and it it did not disappoint! Le Dali is set in a charming and artistic room with a tented ceiling (painted by Philippe Starck's daughter I believe), the tea was prepared perfectly, and the treats arrived promptly (and kept coming - during our stay there seemed to be a specialty served from the chef at almost every meal, all delicious). For New Years Eve I asked the concierge (at around 5 p.m.!) if she had a restaurant recommendation that would be appropriate for us to meet some younger friends that weren't quite up to the price of an Alain Ducasse dinner. The concierge called and made a reservation for us at a very charming bistro within walking distance that was serving a wonderful seafood-oriented prix fixe dinner. Afterwards we returned to the hotel and my daughter and I walked the few steps to the Place de la Concorde to see the fireworks over the Arc de Triomphe, and the Eiffel Tower glittering. The square was alive with food vendors, and just enough action to feel festive without being overwhelming (as it would have been closer to the Arc). Back at the hotel a jazz band was playing and guests were dancing. The doormen were taking their duties seriously and I felt recognized, and safe. No overzealous revelers were going to be allowed to stumble in off the street. Which leads me to a key part of the Le Meurice experience -- as a guest, you will be recognized, and greeted by name. The staff will help you with whatever you need, from a toothbrush to museum tickets. I had to contact the hotel about something after my visit and received a response from manager Franka Holtmann, which was much appreciated. In the restaurants the servers have truly impressive language skills, and I heard guests being spoken to by servers in several languages. At Bar 228 (which is just the right amount of dark and cozy), the bartender was very pleasant about making the special drink I requested, and they brought my daughter a veggie burger (at 10 pm). At breakfast (served in the same room as the famous Alain Ducasse dinners), they knew what an American would want for breakfast, and they were prepared to serve it. It was a great way to start each day, served in a room of classic (and glittering) 18th century style beauty (in contrast to the almost art nouveau qualities of Le Dali). After breakfast, it was a short walk to so many wonderful things to do in Paris - the Tuileries Gardens, the Louvre, the Musee D'Orsay, L'Orangerie, the Grand Palais, Champs Elysee, Place Vendome and the Opera Palais Garnier (which is worth a visit to see not just the Chagall ceiling, but all the ceilings). The skip the line tickets available at the hotel were a huge help, as the winter holidays are a busy time in Paris. After visiting all of that, you can stop at Angelina for hot chocolate, which is right next door. So, I could have paid more and gotten a larger room or a suite with a view, but really, I think this hotel is so much more than a view, it is a wonderful world of its own.

We are staying 6 nights here and love it so far. It’s beautiful, the rooms are exactly the way they look in the photos (we are in 318), the staff are all so sweet and lovely. The hotel bar is gorgeous and the hotel restaurant (Dali) was nice too. Two particular standouts should be noted. One, we arrived at 8am after a flight from Sydney Australia. We knew checkin was 3pm and had no expectation of the room being ready before then. We believed we’d have to suck it up and cope with roaming the streets in our tired states until then and were prepared for that. Instead we were told that while our room wasn’t ready we could stay in another room until our room was ready. That is such wonderful service. It was amazing to be able to have a shower and change my clothes in the comfort of a room at the hotel that was at our disposal until our actual room became ready (which was early at around midday). We appreciated this so much. What a great way to make a wonderful first impression. Second - my husband managed to gouge his finger with his razor blade within an hour of our arrival. We were really worried about it. The concierges were so wonderful in helping us and showed such concern. It was so sweet and helpful and just what we needed. They set up an appointment at a medical centre for us on that very day where there was an English speaking nurse and doctor. I can’t emphasise the degree of genuine care and concern the concierge showed - it was so lovely. Then, the doctor wanted my husband to have a tetanus shot and the pharmacist told us these were “missing” in every pharmacy in Paris - which caused me great anxiety. We explained this to a concierge who got straight on the phone to the pharmacist and arranged for the vaccine to be available. I am really adoring this hotel and our stay here and will absolutely return here.
