Amanpuri in Phuket, Thailand

A destination of casual elegance, the Thai island of Phuket has long been a playground for lovers of sun, sand and surf. It's also home to Amanpuri, the flagship property of Aman Resorts' collection. Tucked into a lush estate on the island's west coast, the resort features pavilion accommodations and villa homes that reflect this Thai island's style. Private outdoor terraces and pools are complemented by dramatic views of the Andaman Sea from this secluded headland location.

The resort offers self-contained luxury with excellent restaurants, its own beach and the decadent Aman Spa featuring treatments using Thailand's distinctive gentle healing arts. It also boasts a fleet of professionally crewed vessels available for picnics on a nearby beach, cocktail cruises, multi-day scuba diving excursions and exclusive charters. On land, the lush vegetation is complemented by a rich cultural history, including 30 Buddhist temples on the island, five excellent golf courses, and the serene, crescent-shaped white-sand beaches lined with loungers and umbrellas.

If you've never stayed at an Aman, you will think Amanpuri is fantastic. While some have said that the property is dated, other than the chaise lounge which collapsed when I sat on it, we would not agree. The property is beautiful and the rooms are gorgeous. However, we have stayed at most of the Aman's in Asia and found Amanpuri lacking because it's missing the one thing that makes Aman's special - the Aman magic. The first time we stayed at an Aman, we were awestruck: how do they know who you are so you never have to sign a bill? how do they know when you are at breakfast/dinner so they can clean up your room or do the turn down service while you are away? It is literally seamless, and this is what makes it worth it to pay the big bucks to stay at these places. Every other Aman we have stayed at got this perfectly. Not at Amanpuri. We spent three nights, and literally every day after breakfast we returned to our room to find that it had not been made up. It was the same thing after dinner. At almost every meal we were questioned as to our room number. The straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak, came on our last morning. We had booked through American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts, which guarantees a late check out. On our last morning at Amanpuri, however, we received a call - while we were sitting at breakfast, no less - telling us that we needed to pack up our stuff and move to another room. Seriously?!?! While I have no idea of what contract Amex and Aman have signed, I have taken advantage of this benefit a lot of times through the years without any issue and have never had to move rooms. At the end of the day, after all of our protestations, we were able to stay where we were, but this left a distinctly unpleasant taste in our mouths. The manager seemed incredibly nice when we checked in. However, unlike all of the other Amans we have stayed at, we never saw him again until we were leaving. Perhaps he should get more involved in resolving these issues. .

This was our first visit to an Aman hotel. From the moment we were driven up to the resort a feeling of restfulness and peace came upon my wife and I. Amanpuri was the last stop on a 2 week trip through Thailand. Amanpuri is a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of Phuket and sits on Phuket's loveliest beach. It is indeed one of the most special places we have ever visited. Service is unparalleled to anything we have ever experienced and we have stayed at some very nice 5 star hotels. I had heard many wonderful, almost to good to be true claims about Aman properties, but somehow this magical place does exist. The service is like nothing else you have ever experienced. Its set on the nicest part of Surin beach, which only had a handful of hotel guests on it. This is an ideal place for rest and peaceful relaxation in stunning surroundings. We also really enjoyed spending time in the hotel's library. Lots of neat books and a comfortable space. The food and beverage here was also outstanding. Complimentary tea time was a fun time too every afternoon at 4pm. The steak I had here for dinner one night was better than the one I had in Singapore at a Michelin Starred Restaurant. I also had the best yogurt of my life at morning breakfast as well. Of note manger Harish Nair made our stay extra special. He was a joy to speak with and is a real asset to the Aman brand. The entire staff is outstanding. We will be looking for other Aman properties to visit in the future as a result of such a phenomenal stay. Thank you to Harish and Preeya for a short but outstanding stay.

We were here for 3 nights after traveling for 3 weeks through Viet Nam, Cambodia and Bangkok. What a welcome respite. The resort has a zen like atmosphere where you just put aside your worries and just relax. It is a small resort that is very spread out - lots of stairs and paths. The rooms/villas are large (no tv) with a spacious bathroom/dressing area. There are slippers and a beach bag for you to use. The spa like toiletries are first class. The pool area is beautiful - quite different looking as the pool is tiled in black (or maybe midnight blue) - so peaceful. The beach is amazing once you climb down the 100 steps. The sand is like powder (not a shell or pebble in sight), the water is crystal clear & warm and tropical fish will swim right next to you. There are servers on the beach who will set up your chairs and umbrellas (they will even move them during the day as the sun moves so your skin is protected) and they set up a tray with cold water on the table next to your chaise. We felt like royalty. The breakfast was delicious - you could eat as healthy/or not as you like - so many excellent choices. The service was impeccable - each person was nicer than the next. Dinner at Arva for 3 nights was delicious. We went to the Elephant Sanctuary and Amanpuri arranged for private transport for us - it was expensive but so worth it. It was an extravagance for us to stay here - a once in a lifetime experience that we truly enjoyed.

After successfully negotiating two security checks on the drive in (more than that which is required to gain access to the country), we arrived at the end of a dark drive and steep hill at the entrance. Everything about the Amanpuri oozes opulence and style. It is a thing of beauty. Going past the swimming pool and three musicians playing traditional far eastern music we arrived at the bar, perched on what looks like one side of a Mayan temple, with its base touching the beach several steps below. Four signature Champagne cocktails were not cheap and they were served with a dried hibiscus flower and nibbles: rice cakes with paprika and Thai style cashews. The serving team complimented the aesthetics and were a cut above and very friendly. Super place. And memorable experience.

The Japanese restaurant is most famous in this hotel. Also the bar under restaurant has room and wine cellar . Very good atmosphere. Strongly recommend the bar and Japanese . And service also very good
