Anantara Phuket Villas in Phuket, Thailand

Phuket may be one of the world’s premier beach destinations, but staying at Anantara Phuket Villas is like having a private slice of the island. On a well-manicured section of Mai Khao Beach, each self-sustaining villa unfolds into at least 600 square feet of living space. Tropical breezes flow through an open-air contemporary design highlighted by bamboo accents and Southern Thai exoticism. Most luscious is the aqua-tiled private pool just two strides from the bed.

Lounge on your sunny daybed with a plate of fresh mangosteen, papaya and dragon fruit. Cycle through coconut groves past the Sino-Portuguese mansions that line Phuket Town’s historic district, stopping to sample market treats and to marvel at ancient temples. Go for a boat ride to the Similan Islands to dive among well-preserved coral reefs in aquamarine waters. Dine on Thai fusion tapas in a restaurant suspended atop a Banyan tree before retiring with a bottle of wine from your villa’s private cellar.

The Anantara Mai Khao Phuket is on Mai Khao beach, located on the secluded northwestern side of Phuket. It’s truly the nicest place we’ve ever stayed, where just hanging out in our room was the preferred alternative to going out and doing something. Although, to be fair, it wasn’t a room: it was a small villa with a private tiled pool, outdoor tub, and private patio and sitting area. It had a zen-like feng shui feel to it; the furniture was simple, clean lines, the floor was polished hardwood, the bathroom was done in white marble. The pool was beautiful, tiled with gleaming blue and gold tiles, and the decorations were likewise casual but tasteful. We somehow got lucky and were upgraded to a “lagoon” villa, which meant we had a private gazebo over the lagoon with an extended walkway to reach it. The lagoon itself was full of fish, turtles, lily pads, Asian Water Monitors (Wikipedia says, no joke, “the possibility of venom in the genus is widely debated,” but we fed them anyway) and a variety of ducks and birds. Our entire private patio and pool could be shuttered so that you could swim “au naturel.” The resort itself had beautifully manicured grounds, a mostly empty white sandy beach, turquoise waters, and three restaurants with fabulous food (one Thai, one Arabic, and one European/seafood). The staff was uniformly professional, warm, and helpful. They put on nightly shows that were (we speculate) intended to depict ancient Thai dances as they would have been performed had high-intensity flamethrowers been on hand. We also happened to make friends with the resort’s Executive Chef (friendly chit chat and honest appreciation of the food goes a long way!), who arranged a special meal of Indian food for us on our last night there. All in all, the best stay we have ever had, and we've been in a lot of high end hotels. The only thing to watch out for is that despite a aggressive fogging program, there are small flying gnats; I never had a bite, but my wife had a few. If you are susceptible to bites, use the (provided) bug repellent!

This was our third visit to Thailand but our first trip to Phuket. We stayed at Anantara Villas for 10 nights in February in a Sala Pool Villa. First thing to mention is that this resort is beautiful. When you walk through from the entrance driveway into the resort it's like stepping into a whole different world. The villas all have their own pool and are clustered in small groups around the huge lake that's stocked with an amazing number of fish. Our villa had a Sala (outdoor living room) that was built over the lake itself and was accessed via a wooden walkway from our villa's pool area. Initially we thought we wouldn't use the Sala much, perhaps we would have a dinner there - but in fact it was such a lovely, peaceful spot to lie back and read books on - it became part of our morning routine to spend time on the Sala. The wildlife was amazing, from the fish in the lake to the tropical birds singing from the trees around the lake - not to forget the large Asian Water Monitors (that we named Hugo and Henrietta 😀). They were often seen sunning themselves on a rock on an island near our Sala or catching fish whilst we were enjoying breakfast at the main restaurant. We ate regularly at Sea.Fire.Salt, a barbeque restaurant down near the beach. The food here was great, from fresh seafood to wagyu beef or tuna steaks cooked on salt bricks. The atmosphere was really relaxed here and there was often a DJ playing laid back tracks over at the nearby cocktail bar. The weather was perfect for our entire stay, hot but with lowish humidity until the last three days when the humidity rose. From our view we would return again in the month of February. We spent three afternoons during our stay being pampered at the Anantara Spa. The massages and treatments here were so relaxing, you leave the spa feeling like a new person - amazing! It was a short stroll from the main pool area out onto Mai Khao beach and we took several long walks along this almost deserted stretch of beach. It was lovely to walk barefoot through the surf - before we knew it we'd walk miles from the resort, stopping ocassionally to pick up the odd piece of plastic waste. As with all resorts, it doesn't matter how nice the environment is if the staff don't match up to your expectations. No problem here - the staff at Anantara Villas are lovely, full of smiles and very attentive. The reception, spa and restaurant staff were all brilliant and helped to make our stay exactly what we hoped it would be - a relaxing reset from our busy lives. The gardeners probably don't get mentioned much here but we would like to mention them - they work tirelessly to keep the resort looking fantastic. We would particularly like to mention Max who looked after us so well during our stay, right through to the moment we left the resort. Also would like to mention Jack and his fantastic cocktails, Jean at Sea.Fire.Salt and Pat with his amazing cakes 😀 This is one of those resorts that we will definitely return to. We stayed at Anantara Villas after five busy days in Singapore. Our primary goal here was to relax and reset, which we definitely did! Thanks for making our stay so memorable.

We stayed here a week and there were two or three days when we only left the villa to go to breakfast and dinner, because the villa had everything. The private pool which is in the L formed by the bedroom and bathroom is the largest I've seen in a hotel, and we spent hours there or in the Sala by the pool with its daybed, minibar and wine cooler. It's very private and peaceful. The staff are amazing, always smiling and always doing whatever they can to make your stay the best ever. The only time we had to call maintenance was when the aircon temperature was stuck one evening at 10pm, and I almost think this happened so they could show how they would come straight away and fix it, which they did. The buffet breakfast is excellent with a good variety of Thai, Indian and European food, as is the food in the Thai restaurant, especially the Tuesday seafood buffet. The hotel grounds are beautiful, with lagoons covered with water lilies and birdsong all day long. It's the most tranquil holiday we've ever had. I understand the villas are being renovated this year, and that they've just bought 80 more bikes for guests to use free of charge, which is great news as we'll certainly be going back again

We have just spent 2 nights at the Anantara Mai Khao Phuket villas. The resort is pleasant with a manageable number of villas and, although it was at full occupancy, it didn't feel over-crowded. The villas are showing their age, they look like they are at least 15 years old and they are in need of a major overhaul in all respects. They were simply not up to the quality of villas available at the Pullman or Rosewood for a similar price. We paid £1,200 per night for a pool villa which was frankly extortionate for the quality offered. It was Chinese New Year so hotels were fully booked out but for that price it represented terrible value for money. The Sea, Fire, Salt restaurant is very nice. We had lunch there on both days of our stay. We also had dinner one evening in The Tree House, which is in a stunning location. We loved that. The La Sala restaurant was adequate and service levels there were not up to standard. The hotel has a nice pool area and the beach is good but not really for children as the sea gets deeper quite quickly. Nai Yang beach (Phuket Marriot and The Slate) is a much better beach, albeit more crowded. One gripe. The hotel was supposed to arrange us an airport transfer. They forgot to do it and I had to arrange a taxi on the morning. Overall, I would say that the service levels at this hotel are not at the very high level, which we experienced in the Pullman and The Slate, and the villas are really showing their age. For this reason, it is a 4 star experience from a resort which considers itself to be 5 star but needs a big refurbishment to get back to that level. There are better places to stay in Phuket and the 9.0 rating flatters it.

We had a fantastic stay travelling with a 2 year old. The hotel - The layout of the hotel is nice and the small number of rooms and villa style designed around the artificial lake gives a quiet relaxed atmosphere. The grounds are well kept and the beach and pool area beautiful. The hotel is in a quiet area of Phuket. The room - We stayed in a pool villa which is the smaller room, but it is still very large by most standards. You get a large private outdoor space with a proper pool (not just a large bathtub). You could easily spend all day in the room enjoying the privacy of your own pool and private sun loungers, but it would be a shame not to enjoy the public areas too. The rooms are probably getting to the end of their lifecycle before a refurbishment is due - at least to the outside areas - but nothing that detracts too much from what is overall still a very positive experience. Food - breakfast selection is good - maybe not as varied as you would expect at a larger hotel - but fitting for the size of the hotel and well prepared. The food in general is good everything we had was delicious - maybe not always same standard as a truly high end restaurant in the city - but definitely in the better end for this style of hotel and price point. The only let down was the bbq at the beach one evening which was disappointing with a very small selection for the price charged - we would recommend to skip the buffet and just have dinner at the regular restaurants. There are also a few good small local Thai places at the beach outside the hotel and an even better one behind the hotel near the tennis courts (if you ask a hotel buggy will drive you there and pick you up later). The service - we have been very impressed by the friendly staff and high level of service everywhere in the hotel. Definitely above average and fitting for a five star hotel - and the always friendly and smiling staff makes for an enjoyable and relaxing holiday experience. The hotel is family friendly with kids club and activities - but small enough to still be quiet and without the mayhem of some of the larger resorts catering to families. The guests seem to be a nice mix of families and couples traveling without children. We would recommend you make sure to get a room at the main hotel and not at the vacation club next door (also nice but not as nice as the main hotel). Overall we would highly recommend this hotel and definitely a place we would consider for a return visit.
