Reviews for Mahekal Beach Resort

A lovely hotel but it has a nasty sting in it's tail - so beware!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

In many ways it pains me to have to write bad things about this hotel as it is rather lovely: beautiful grounds, right on the beach, low-rise rustic thatched accommodation (which could do with a bit of TLC), 3 lovely pools, great food and drinks and (in the main) friendly staff. But there are some things that you need to know if you are booking this hotel - especially if it's the 'All Inclusive package' via a Travel Agent from the UK. You will have a nasty shock at checkin! Even though you may have booked 'All Inclusive' you will have to pay an additional US$35 Resort Fee per room per day and an additional US$15 per person per day Service Fee (apparently upfront tips) plus an environmental tax of approx. US$2 per day per room. This equates to approx. US$67 per room per day. The information on the Mehakal Beach website says that all these fees are included in the 'All Inclusive' price, except for the environment tax. The sting in the tail is that we were told at checkin the 'All Inclusive' price only applies if you "book direct with the hotel". This is not mentioned on the hotel website, nor in the 'All Inclusive Experience' flyer embedded in the website. Our travel agent did not know about these fees either. In the UK you would not be able to get away with this as it is very misleading. The sting left a bitter taste for a party of 50+ guests staying at the hotel for a wedding. It's a real pity as the majority of the party liked the natural beauty of the hotel. So, my feedback is please change your website and flyer to make it absolutely clear what additional fees guests will have to pay if not booking directly with the hotel. And please make sure your third party suppliers also know. There is no reason to hide the additional fees and if you don't make it clear, the bad taste will linger longer than is should and this would be a real shame.

Relaxing, wonderful vacation!

We absolutely loved this resort! The atmosphere was so relaxing. The tropical feel, shaded, cool breeze from the ocean and the individual huts all make the ambiance amazing. The staff were attentive to every detail and were so friendly. The landscaping is tended to daily. Also, there is security on site everywhere so no one but guests are allowed in the property. Food was very good but not the best but most hotel food isn’t. We plan to come back!

Revive Spa at Mahekal Beach Resort

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

This review is for Revive spa at Mahekal beach only. What I have to say is that from visiting the spa to book a treatment to walking out I had the most relaxing and wonderful experience, largely due to Jesús Brito. We described what we wanted and didn't want and the knowledgeable team worked together to give us a lovely experience. My mom booked a deep tissue massage with Claudia and I had an amazing hot stone massage with Oseas and both of us walked around in bliss for the rest of our day. I cannot say enough about how wonderful and caring they all were. 10/10 would recommend to all!

Not great.

Honestly this place is very difficult to sum up but essentially it is not good value and you are constantly being tricked into paying extra and always needing to tip! As an all inclusive guest it is so unsettling. Upon arrival I was immediately charged an extra $67 US per day of our stay for service & resort fee however at breakfast or even for a Diet Coke you had to sign a bill that was very clear you needed to add service starting at 15% and it was extremely inappropriate for the breakfast buffet. Honestly horrible experience. The reception and customer service were very rude and unaccommodating, if you request an iron or something to your room expect a 4 hour wait and you are made to feel like you are being unreasonable. We had a small baby which was all part of the booking and they still put us on the 3rd floor in a room next to the beach club which pumped music till 3am. We had to move rooms due to this. The beach is a public beach with ropes to separate the resort so often homeless people hanging nearby albeit there is always security. This felt like a 3 star resort at best. I would never return.

Absolute dump. Avoid like the plague.

Total disappointment we stayed for a wedding. I dont even know where to start. The front desk was incredibly rude and unhelpful. Willing to charge extortionate unnecessary fees where possible. The food is well below average. The ‘All inclusive’ drinks are very very cheap alcohol and loaded with sugar. The room was dog sh*t. Small unaccommodating, broken. We requested a baby friendly room and stuck up on the 3rd floor by a discotheque. Public beach with homeless people Roaming around. Save me…. The staff could not give 2 sh*ts about you. Avoid the like plague!!! Totally ruined our experience. We came away slightly depressed as a family. Luckily we went to Tulum to save the day!!!
