Reviews for Thompson Playa del Carmen Main House

Day at Hyatt Centro

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 7 hours ago

Staff were great. Food was great, although drinks a little expensive. We had a cabana and our waiter Ernesto was attentive and fantastic! Biggest distraction was that the place is now kid friendly. Lots of kids splashing and making more noise than we wanted getting away for us as a couple. They could benefit from having an adults only area.

The Beach House is a Great Choice—For parents with older teens or young adults

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 13 hours ago

My family has been been coming to Playa del carmen for about 7 years. The first 6 of those years were at the Grand Hyatt. This year, since the Grand Hyatt closed, we decided to try the Beach House. This is a true boutique hotel. There are 27 rooms. My wife and I have always booked a suite during our stays—kids and friends get their own rooms. The suite here was really nice. Large and we had a wrap around baclony with a hot tub—-really nice and as good as the Grand Hyatt. The staff is great and has been very accommodating. Soraya, Vince and Eddie all have been stand out staff. But if you are going to stay here there are some differences from the Grand Hyatt. This is a small hotel. It is also further south and in what I would call the more touristy part of Playa. It was a little more of an adjustment for my wife and i because the northern part of the city is a little more serene. There are no true beach options. While the hotel is on the beach there are no chairs, lounges or cabanas on the beach. There are those amenities by the pool over looking the beach which was fine with us. There is also just one small restaurant. It does not have a ton of options, but the food is good and fresh. The bar is actually really solid but closes at sun down. There is no real concierge either. The bottom line is my family has chosen Playa as our destination of choice for the Xmas holiday. We really do love it here. It is far from a perfect location and the hotel is not the 4 Seasons or like other fine resorts (neither was the Grand Hyatt). But if you like the vibe of walking around a fun place—-eating different foods—-having a solid time with your kids—-Playa is a really solid choice and obviously has been our since our kids were in their teens. One last thing we had heard there is a lot of noise at this hotel from the bars around 5th Ave. We have not experienced loud noise other than breaking waves. It might be a function of our room or just that the beach house is far enough away from 5th Ave where you don’t get the noise.

Tequila tasting at Hyatt Centric

The tequila tasting experience with Carlos was amazing. He’s very knowledgeable and fun, we had a great experience. And the best part was all the different tequilas we got to taste.

Perfect stay!

Our experience at Hyatt Centric Beach House was excellent from start to finish. The property is well-maintained, comfortable, and perfectly located. Soraya provided exceptional service — she was warm, professional, and incredibly helpful. Her attention to detail and kindness made our stay even more enjoyable. The staff at the beach house were also phenomenal! Would definitely stay here again when in Playa del Carmen!

Ideally-located, stylish hotel with a gorgeous pool and excellent service

Had some Hyatt free night certificates for level 1-4 hotels and found this one among the eligible bunch. This is probably open of the nicest level 4 hotels in the chain. I only had a basic King garden view room in the downtown location but it was huge, with a nice couch/sitting area and large bathroom with roomy walk-in shower and his/hers mini-closets with separate rods for hanging clothes and drawers. My room also had a roomy balcony but there were trees and foliage blocking any view, which was fine because the room faced a alley and a new apartment or hotel being constructed across the alley. The downtown location is smack in the middle of the epicenter of activity in Playa del Carmen—restaurants, shops, and guys dressed up in costumes (Deadpool, the Mask,Beetlejuice) looking for tips for posing for photos just like in NYC’s Times Square. It can be a bit noisy if you’re not used to city noises, but it didn’t really bother us. Note that the surrounding area has a lot of “urban” activity (construction, crowds, street performers, restaurant hawkers, the occasional beggar) but we never felt unsafe. It is an ideal location if you like activity and walking. You are less than 10 minutes from the beach and the ferry to Cozumel. The downtown location has a beautiful rooftop pool with ample and varied seating, including loungers, chairs, half-in, half-out of the water loungers, swim-up bar, etc. Apparently some nights there is a happening nighttime club party atmosphere. There is also a modest restaurant with gorgeous views of the ocean in the distance. One day, we visited the beach club location of the hotel. Being a hotel guest of the downtown location, you get access to the beach club, which is little more than lounge chairs and other seating separated from the beach by a step-up barrier. There is also a small, decidedly modest pool and waiter service for food and drinks. The hotel sits on a rather small beach but the views are very nice. The staff of the hotel are all friendly and helpful. There are various activities offered, including wine and tequila tastings. One of us participated in a guacamole-making class, which included being able to eat more than you’d ever want of the results of the class. Fun! One note if you have a car: the streets around the hotel tend to be pedestrian-only, which makes it challenging to find and get to the hotel with your car. We ended up pulling into a loading zone on a nearby street and my wife went to the hotel to get instructions. A bellman followed her back to our car and then said he would pull up to the entrance with our luggage while we walked back to check in. Apparently, they are able to do that using what is normally a pedestrian-only street. Kinda tricky but it was fine since we didn’t need in-and-out access during our stay.
