For those who are looking for a high-end intimate resort experience, that provides both high-touch personalized luxury service and a relaxing low-key air of simplicity, the Viceroy is a hidden gem among the many larger properties in the area...This property is unique in what it delivers, with only 40 or so standalone villas, and the feel of being in a remote jungle, and with impeccable service from a seasoned and stable staff, it competes with the highest end big name properties just up the road at a lower price point....the property is small, but makes great use of the square footage, and provides all of the amenities of larger properties in a more intimate setting....very relaxing from the rooms, to the beach, to the restaurants, to the spa...all spectacular and very near downtown Playa del Carmen...

My husband and I wanted an east getaway for the 2 of us -- something direct from O'Hare and lots of privacy. The Viceroy went above and beyond our expectations! First, the grounds are absolutely spectacular! The waterfalls, greenery and flowers are just beautiful. Upon our arrival, David, gave us a tour of the property which included an optional Mayan cleansing ritual at the Spa. Fun and interesting. They have copal burning all over the resort and it is wonderful. Take a couple extra minutes to hold hands and enjoy the beautiful ritual. Originally we chose and booked a Premium Villa for the complete privacy, however, upon arrival we had been upgraded to an Oceanview Villa -- my husband was not happy. The Oceanview have a view of the ocean BUT it is NOT private. While it was offered to us to have put up something that would block the view, we chose to go back to the Premium Villa -- there were other reasons we chose the Premium including the fact that you can walk from the plunge pool to the outdoor shower without having to walk through the Villa while wet. There was not a Premium Villa available the first night so the staff was amazing and moved us the next morning. The Villas are stunning! Simply put, they are gorgeous. The rooms were spotless and absolutely beautiful. They are huge and the showers are fabulous. The toiletries are top of the line and smell lovely. This was a wonderful vacation and the Viceroy was superb -- however, I have to say that the staff at the Viceroy truly make it special. It is by far the best staffed hotel my husband and I have ever stayed at (and we've traveled extensively to Bora Bora, the Caribbean, Paris, London, Ireland, etc.). Pepe at the pool, beach, and restaurant was just a charmer who would stop and chat or move like lightening to satisfy a request. David at the front desk was kind, professional, and very patient when we first arrived and assisted with the room change. ALL of the restaurant staff was polished, professional, and kind. Truly the staff at this magnificent property are to be commended -- and we will return, thanks to their hospitality and kindness. Back to the property for a moment -- besides being beautiful and well-maintained, the spider monkeys are an added treat! We saw them in the trees above us every afternoon and even greeted some walking down the paths....they are harmless, beautiful creatures that add to the special nature of this resort. The pool is quiet, clean, and has plenty of beach towels all the time. The palapas on the beach are lovely and a great way to get out of the sun. The beach is small but well-kept by the staff. It does have a pier but we never saw anyone use it for anything other than a walk out and photos. The drive into the Viceroy is a bit....interesting. You feel like you are driving into nowhere or off the end of the world! Note that there are 2 HUGE resorts on both sides of the Viceroy but surprisingly enough the noise was at a minimum and we never were distracted or put off by it. The restaurants are really very nice as well. La Marea is a beautiful setting and the food was excellent. The Coral Grill & Bar is a great place for breakfast if you choose not to have room service, and the Friday night BBQ was excellent -- the portions are GIGANTIC and my husband and I shared ONE and it was plenty to fill us both! Beautiful to sit outside and see the ocean, or watch the sunset, or view a full moon while enjoying the ocean breeze. Simply lovely.

Just returned from our fourth visit in five years and already can't wait to go back again. You won't find a better, more relaxing or beautiful resort, but it is the people who work there who make it truly special. Everyone -- literally everyone -- on staff is friendly, warm, genuinely kind and focused on making the guest experience the best it can be. We are particularly partial to Victor and Jose Luis at the bar (and "new" Victor and Cesar, too) as well as Pepe and Francisco at the pool and beach, but there was not a single employee who did not greet us with a smile and kind word. Admittedly, this is a quiet place and there are not a lot of activities on premise as you may find at larger properties, but that is not what we go there for -- if you want to relax and be well cared for, this is the place for you. The property is meticulously and lovingly maintained, the food and drinks are top notch, and the service is second to none. This place deserves every accolade it receives and then some. Thank you, Viceroy Riveira Maya!

We have not been to Viceroy for years. So long in fact, it was the Tides back the (go back and look at my review from 2010). The more things change... The hotel is still exceptional. Comparing it to 7+ years ago the biggest stand-outs are there are more casitas especially nearer the beach and the growth of the surrounding area. This property retains the great jungle seclusion feel. This time we opted for the 2story casita. Was not disappointed. The layout of bottom floor living and second story the bedroom was perfect. It was portrayed as water view - not really with the foliage but we didn't complain. Key here is beach and seclusion. You can walk through the property and feel like you are the only guests. Beach is still one of the beast if the water entry is a little rocky. We used the main pool more this time since we went during super hot season versus last time when we were on the beach in private palapa being very spoiled. One big change is there are now two very large resorts on each side of Viceroy. During the day and especially on weekends, the water in front of the hotel turns into jet ski/parasail/kayak central. Not as bad as Hotel Zone in Cancun but not far off. Big change from Tides days when you may not see a another person walking by. It was not a total detriment but a little different. The casitas are total luxury with premium furnishings, privacy and cleanliness. Beds are awesome and the draw is having your own private plunge pool and sunning area which totally promotes couple time. Great area to have breakfast, cocktails and wait for the local monkeys to stop by. We usually spent mornings and early afternoons at beach/main pool and late afternoons and late nights at our private pool. Great turn down service freshens things up while we enjoyed dinner or went to nearby Playa Del Carmen. We did the rate with breakfast and a resort credit. The food here is exceptional serving high-end Mexican dishes at dinner. Lunch is a little more casual but know that you will spend over $150usd dinner including drinks. The food is worth it but we did head into PDC a couple of nights ($15 cab ride) and had some good meals and fun walks along 5th Ave to save a few bucks. We did drinks at the beach and pool which cost what you expect at a high end resort - we also stopped on the way and bought a couple bottles of hooch to make our own cocktails when we were hanging at our casita. We tipped well during the trip so felt not bad. Check-in and out here is so cool. You basically sign your CC when your being shown your room and they come find you on your last day to confirm your charges and make it very simple, quick and unassuming. The final and biggest thing here is service. It's mentioned often but here it is part of DNA. They understand the subtlety of fine service - meaning discreet and ever present. From check-in to bar to dinner to beach - it's prompt, often and friendly. If your looking for couple time and reconnect time - this is the place.

The grounds, the staff, the food and drinks, the rooms are all top notch. The massage was excellent but a little over priced. Not a deal breaker just a little high. Beautiful beach, excellent wait staff the food was great, went to Playa del Carmen for a dinner that was awesome, went and swam in the cenotes with a guide arranged by hotel and that was perfect too.
