Alma del Pacifico Beach Hotel & Spa in Playa Esterillos Este, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Immerse yourself in nature, art and design at this ultimate seaside escape. Just a 90-minute drive from San Jose International Airport, between the towns of Jaco Beach and Quepos, you will discover Alma del Pacifico Hotel, hiding in the rainforest next to one of the country’s quietest, prettiest beaches, Playa Esterillos Este. Here you will enjoy glistening ocean waves, steep verdant cliffs and walking paths that wind through colorful ornamental, herb and vegetable gardens to your oasis bungalow. The highlight of each bungalow is the mosaic-tiled shower that opens into a private tropical garden, perfect for spotting an endangered scarlet macaw spreading its wings over the treetops.

This cute and original hotel has a bit of a California feel, designed by husband-and-wife team Sherrill and Charlene Broudy. Architect Sherrill created sweeping arced ceilings of indigenous wood, while Charlene, a world-renowned artist, filled the space with vibrant paintings, mosaics and tapestries totaling over 150 pieces of original art work displayed throughout the resort. The restaurant features gourmet international and Costa Rican dishes with emphasize on fresh seafood and produce grown in the hotel’s own gardens. The lovely seaside spa offers guests an extensive menu of therapies that incorporate organic local ingredients.

What a wonderful surprise to find such an astonishing hotel, lovely in every way. The beauty of the structures, the vibrancy of their colors, the lively and modern art and design, the thoughtfulness of the overall plan that affords both privacy and accessibility, the excellent dining room and delicious food, and a staff that makes you feel right at home and cared for, all situated on the beautiful tropical beaches of Esterillos Este where morning walks, afternoon swims and evening sunsets revitalize the soul. If you want to experience what being in a tropical paradise feels like, eschew the big, touristy hotels and give this place a try. I am so glad I did!

We had a short visit here a few years ago and our second visit last week was everything we hoped for. We stayed in one of the beachside villas which have STUNNING views of the Pacific and a huge beautiful, secluded beach where we enjoyed many long walks, the surf and sand are spectacular. The villas are very spacious, clean, airy, and beautifully decorated with art and tropical flowers, they are just as described and shown on the website. We enjoyed hanging out on our large patio and in the beachside hammocks and loungers. Our plunge pool was also a really nice treat. The ocean was warm, it has a strong surf but tide schedules for safe swimming times are provided. The service was excellent, from check in, room cleaning and restaurant staff, all were top notch. Staff are so polite, welcoming and attentive. Our meals were great, loved the variety and prep of catch of the day. There is a town centre complex with a few restaurants a short drive away, we tried lunch there but found it overpriced and had a North American feel. A much better option was a 20 minute drive to Playa Hermosa, we had a great lunch in a lively restaurant on the beach with a great view of surfers. Alma del Pacifico is really special, a little piece of heaven, highly recommended! Thanks again to the staff for a great visit!

Beautiful hotel on a long, dark sand beach. The villas have an amazing view of the ocean. The rooms are extremely spacious and well decorated with colorful, vibrant art. The personnel, especially Evelyn and Luna, are friendly, and helpful. We had a reception for our daughter's wedding and everything was perfect: the decorations, the food and the service. We highly recommend this hotel.

4 person family, 11 boy, 14 year old and parents had a blast. We loved the staff, from the folks that cleaned our room to the wait staff in the excellent open air restaurant. Warren, the manager was supportive, helpful and made us feel very comfortable. His suggestions were good as well. The rooms are very cool, open air and the water front units are great. We felt safe, and that we were surrounded by friendly folks. There was a boutique Yoga and surf hotel just down the beach where I rented good surf boards. If you do rent surf boards I suggest you do it there. There was a surf pro that will head out and surf with you a bit, which I found necessary to learn a bit about getting out. The beach has strong currents but the kids had a blast body surfing and playing on the beach. Food was great. Breakfast was my favorite though the dinner wait staff made us come back several nights. Rent a car when you get there. Get off the hotel grounds a bunch too. They will help you do it.

I went to Alma del Pacifico for 3 days and wish I could have stayed longer. Was amazing. The bungalows are spacious and beautiful, I love the outdoor shower. Everything is very private. There are 2 beautiful pools, a jacuzzi (it is not heated, wish it was--unseasonably cold) and a large beach area. You can walk for a really long time down the beach. The staff are very nice and helpful. One of the most amazing places I have stayed particularly for the price. Beautifully landscaped property. Easy to get to Jaco and Manuel Antonio natl. park.
