Koa Kea Hotel & Resort in Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

Waves crash near the lanais of Koa Kea Hotel & Resort's oceanfront guestrooms, a collection of low-profile buildings that blend with the nature around them. Inside, fresh flowers accent simple, modern island décor and art prints of coral. Koa Kea means "white coral," a tribute to the life-giving power of the reefs. According to Hawaiian mythology, coral is the goddess granddaughter of the world’s creator. From November to May, Koa Kea’s slice of the Pacific hosts a migration of humpback whales, so keep an eye to the horizon.

Brew a cup of Nespresso coffee and watch the slender white ocean birds dive for their morning meal. Join them on the shore. Beat the noonday sun with a hike through the rainforest on Kuilau or Moalepe Trail – only 10 percent of the Garden Isle is accessible by road. Swim in a secluded lagoon under a waterfall. Order a seaside dinner of bronzed diver scallops with pea sprouts in a sweet lilikoi beurre blanc.

We had a sea front suite and it really was sea front - the coastal path runs immediately in front and then there is the ocean. This suite made this resort special - if we’d had one of the rooms that overlook the pool I think I’d have been much more disappointed in the experience. We got the warmest welcome of any resort we stayed in. Wine in the fridge and a half bottle of sparkling wine and huge floral arrangement delivered to our room shortly after we arrived. The pool deck is a bit small but pleasant with a good tikki bar. Service levels were consistently excellent and even when a few minor things went wrong (a flat battery on our door lock, another guest charging things to our room) they were fixed immediately and with a genuine apology. The step down to the beach had been partially washed away so beach access was a bit of a long step down on uneven stones. We had one good dinner at the on site restaurant but breakfast was nothing special. We liked the fact that there were several good restaurants within easy walking distance. Anenue Cafe for breakfast and Keoki’s Paradise for dinner both highly recommended.

Before going to Kauai, I did extensive research on which hotel to stay at. We have been to all the islands before expect for Kauai. I am one to take my time when deciding as I want it to be just right. I read the positive reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor about this hotel. So I booked it and was overwhelmed with how this hotel exceeded my expectations. It was the perfect place for my husband and I to get away for 6 days. The staff at this hotel are selected very carefully as they continually show attention to detail and warm friendly personalities. Checking in with Angelea (sp?) was easy and she even escorted us to our room showing us every detail we needed to know for the week. We chose the garden view room which was perfect for us as we like our privacy. There is a small patio with a lounge chair and table and chairs for morning coffee or afternoon apps/cocktails. The room was cleaned each day by Jen and Alma who did a perfect job making sure each detail was taken care of. The evening turndown service is an added bonus with fresh bottled water and chocolates left. Having romantic music playing when we got back to our room at night was a very lovely touch. We were their celebrating my birthday and a bottle of champagne and flutes were left in our room to enjoy. The pool bar is a round hut style bar with ocean views. Erin was our server and so fun to talk with. She went out of her way to make us feel comfortable. The pool is simple. I love the fact that if someone has not been in their chairs for 30 minutes then they lose the chairs. We rarely had a hard time finding chairs to lounge in. The umbrella ones are a little bit harder to acquire. Great hot tub too. All with ocean views. Having the breakfast as part of our package was great. This is not a typical continental breakfast. It also includes entrée items with a few items such as eggs benedict being a small $5 upcharge. Also, the wait staff are very welcoming! Jenny took care of us with a smile and willingness to share wonderful things about the island. I recommend getting daily breakfast as part of the package. Brienee helped us schedule a Napali ocean sunset cruise with Andy's. This was a great experience, although i do recommend taking Dramamine the day before or wearing sea sick patches. As soon as the sail went up on the catamaran, people got sick...including me! They said it happens every time and to remember sea sick medicine. I would do it again as the views of the Napali Coast were wonderful. We also hiked Waimea Canyon which is a must. The bell man from Spokane was also nice to meet as he saw my husband was wearing a No-Li Brewhouse t shirt from Spokane and struck up a conversation. This is a great boutique hotel that pays close attention to detail and we can't thank the staff enough for making our trip relaxing and fun. We are planning to book again next April and can't wait to go back to the Koa Kea (white Coral).

After having to experience the epic historic flooding rains in the north Kauai, and 2 1/2 days of pouring rain, we came to Southern Kauai and experienced Koa Kea Hotel and it was amazing! Such great service, first even though it is valet only, all the valet team was so welcoming and funny to be around. When you are checked in you are greeted with a lei, which is so fun, we came a little early for check in but that was no problem we sat by the pool and then they called on my phone to let me know when the room was ready and then apologized for the delay which was no big deal lan we were early anyway. Room was very nice, updated, clean and beds were super comfy, with a nice patio area with chairs to relax in. The pool area is very nice, the pool is heated and there is plenty of chairs and umbrellas and a great poolside bar with awesome wait staff that quickly learned what I was ordering. Beach area is small but very nice crystal clear warm water, with monk seals that visited us on several days :). Red Salt was great a little pricey but we had breakfast included and it was so delicious and included a continental buffet and a hot mal item. The eggs benedict and lemon pineapple soufflé were amazing. We did have dinner one night and it was very good and our waitress was super flexible with several picky requests. We had a very late evening flight and we were able to stay all day at the hotel and they had a suite for us to use to freshen up so we could feel comfortable on the long flight home. It was a great experience and would not hesitate to recommend this location or a stay here again. Top notch service and experience.

From the time we pulled up we were treated with such wonderful HOSPITALITY:) the valet is awesome, with great suggestions on places to go see. The waitresses in the restaurant and pool area were amazing! The room was clean and and bathrooms were great. The pool is super relaxing, though I do wish they had some soft Hawaiian music playing. The only other down side is fighting to get a seat around the pool, people really abused the reserving of seats. We got the package that includes breakfast and it’s delicious. It’s worth getting the package, otherwise you will end up paying $22 or more per person for breakfast. The package includes the continental breakfast and a item of your choice from the menu. And for $5 more you can get their house specials, the lobster Benedict is to die for and the pineapple soufflé was so sweet and yummy! We are so impressed with the property and would totally come back!!! Thank you for the wonderful stay!

Very good location for swimming and snorkeling. You can walk up and down the beach easily with access to other hotels and beaches. Our partial ocean view room was just that. Not terribly spectacular, particularly with a partial wall blocking our view. The staff was quite helpful. Wonderful breakfast. The rooms were comfortable, but small. Fridge, nice coffee maker, but a we felt a bit tight...low ceilings? Pool was lovely with very good service. Only complaint was the yoga classes begin at 7AM on the lawn outside the pool facing rooms. Even on the 3rd floor the instructor could be heard since she uses a microphone. Please ditch the microphone for yoga in the morning!
