Koa Kea Hotel & Resort in Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

Waves crash near the lanais of Koa Kea Hotel & Resort's oceanfront guestrooms, a collection of low-profile buildings that blend with the nature around them. Inside, fresh flowers accent simple, modern island décor and art prints of coral. Koa Kea means "white coral," a tribute to the life-giving power of the reefs. According to Hawaiian mythology, coral is the goddess granddaughter of the world’s creator. From November to May, Koa Kea’s slice of the Pacific hosts a migration of humpback whales, so keep an eye to the horizon.

Brew a cup of Nespresso coffee and watch the slender white ocean birds dive for their morning meal. Join them on the shore. Beat the noonday sun with a hike through the rainforest on Kuilau or Moalepe Trail – only 10 percent of the Garden Isle is accessible by road. Swim in a secluded lagoon under a waterfall. Order a seaside dinner of bronzed diver scallops with pea sprouts in a sweet lilikoi beurre blanc.

We were traveling to Kauai for a family wedding, and everyone was on their own for housing. I searched here on Trip Advisor and found great reviews, one of which was from a friend of ours! The resort is relatively new, having been rebuilt after Hurricane Iniki in 1992. All of the rooms have a great view, and at least a partial view of the ocean. The staff was very welcoming when we arrived early and we went to the pool-side bar to get a drink and some food and start vacation. Each of the rooms has a balcony where you can sit and just enjoy the atmosphere. Wi-Fi is free and pretty fast. There is a small refrigerator in each room in a corner nook, and the countertop above it was a great place to keep snacks and useful items that we didn't want on the chest/desk. The only downside was that there was almost no counter in the bathroom -- there was a small corner table, but it was barely big enough for my husband's travel kit. Shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion were all provided. The spa focuses on bodywork -- no hair or nails. The restaurant, Red Salt, is reviewed separately. We will definitely plan to stay here on our next trip to Hawaii. Oh, and don't feed the chickens!

We left wondering if "Koa Kea" translates to Motel 6. I'll assume by the many positive reviews of this property that our experience was an anomaly. We flew to Kauai following a week at the Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island, which probably didn't help, as this hotel paled in comparison. We arrived early - about two hours before check-in time, and were not surprised our room wasn't ready. What was disappointing, however, was that after waiting in the lobby for the early afternoon, the room was still not available when I checked with the desk 15 minutes after check-in time. The person at the desk explained they were full the evening before and didn't have adequate staff to clean all the rooms on time, but one would think they'd have made it a priority knowing we were waiting. When we did get into the room, we found two soiled towels folded and ready for our use, so I guess I know how they got through the short staffing issue. I brought the towels to the desk and asked to have the manager call me, but never heard from anyone. As for the room itself, we found it quite small with very little dresser/storage space. The bathroom was nicely done, though with only a single sink and no separate water closet, it's definitely on the cramped side. The pool is very small and shallow, and there is no accessible beach on the property, though it is only a short walk. The one real positive was the valet service - always quick and friendly with recommendations for restaurants and local sites. We'll be back at the Grand Hyatt next time. It's only slightly more expensive, but at least there we feel like we get what we pay for.

But I will attempt to say a bit more to help other travellers. This is, as others have said, a small boutique hotel. It is not a massive property with waterslides and children everywhere so if that is what you are looking for, I suggest you look on. Otherwise, without a doubt, you will not regret a stay here. When we pulled up to the driveway, Traci (one of the many amazing valet staff) helped us out of our car using our name. We were expected and were welcomed as if we were royalty. We were led inside the lobby area which is beautifully decorated but not pretentious. There were many areas to sit and relax or have a cocktail. We were then checked in and given a brief tour of the property - as we arrived at night, tiki torches were lit everywhere outside and the chairs around the fire pits were so inviting. Simply beautiful. Our room was waiting for us with a complementary bottle of champagne for our anniversary celebration, as well as a bottle of wine in the mini fridge. TIP - If you book a dinner at their onsite restaurant Red Salt (also absolutely amazing - special thanks to Chris) you can bring this complementary bottle to the dining room and consume it with your meal with no corkage fee. Rooms were spacious and well laid out. We booked an ocean view room and it did not disappoint in any way at all. (The only tiny niggle is that there is not very much dresser space to unpack - in fact, our cruise ship had more). This in no way impacted our holiday. There is a large marble walk in shower (I believe only the ocean front rooms have a bath) with a rain shower overhead, as well as a removable shower head with multiple settings. Toiletries were great and replaced as needed. I cannot rave enough about housekeeping at this resort. The room was cleaned twice daily and all towels and toiletries replaced. At turndown each evening, two complimentary bottles of water and a bowl of ice were placed bedside. For your convenience there is laundry onsite with very reasonable charges to use the machines. Wash is one dollar as is dryer. Soap is available in the gift shop in the lobby. As others have said, the resort is ocean front, but for a sandy beach you must walk to the left or right. Our favourite spot was about a 2 minute walk to the right facing the ocean. Watersports hut is onsite and personnel very friendly. You can use as many beach towels as you need (which you obtain from this hut) and do not need a towel card. The gorgeous outdoor pool and hot tub are open until 10pm daily and an evening swim is amazing with the tiki torches surrounding it. Regarding excursions, the front desk/concierge will assist you in any way you need. They will make recommendations for activities or restaurants and will even assist with the booking of these activities. Even better, they have index cards with specific driving directions to just about anything you would care to see/do on the island so no need for GPS. Special thanks to Jennifer. Customer service was outstanding. There was a small issue with our bill when we were leaving and management did more than make it right. Staff at this hotel clearly understand making sure every client leaves perfectly satisfied (as this client did) and is interested in building repeat business. Mahalo to everyone who makes this resort such an amazing place to stay. If you are considering this hotel, consider no further....just book. If you like small properties with amazing service and beautiful surroundings, you will not be disappointed. Please feel free to email if you have specific questions and I'll try to answer them.

My friend and I stayed at Koa Kea and had the best experience. The staff were friendly, kind and extremely helpful. The service was incredibly fast and attentive. I had some water damage to my phone and within minutes of an embarrassing request for a bag of rice to dry it out was the bag already at the door. Rooms were beautiful..very clean and the beds were very comfy. Great restaurants in the area including the Red Salt restaurant in the hotel. Best meal we had on island! Would definitely recommend to all you appreciate excellent service and smaller boutique hotels!

This was a good combination of offseason pricing and great location. The in house Red Salt restaurant was excellent. Great service including very helpful consierges (booked our excursions in advance) and very helpful driving direction postcards. Nice pool and beach access.
