Koa Kea Hotel & Resort in Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

Waves crash near the lanais of Koa Kea Hotel & Resort's oceanfront guestrooms, a collection of low-profile buildings that blend with the nature around them. Inside, fresh flowers accent simple, modern island décor and art prints of coral. Koa Kea means "white coral," a tribute to the life-giving power of the reefs. According to Hawaiian mythology, coral is the goddess granddaughter of the world’s creator. From November to May, Koa Kea’s slice of the Pacific hosts a migration of humpback whales, so keep an eye to the horizon.

Brew a cup of Nespresso coffee and watch the slender white ocean birds dive for their morning meal. Join them on the shore. Beat the noonday sun with a hike through the rainforest on Kuilau or Moalepe Trail – only 10 percent of the Garden Isle is accessible by road. Swim in a secluded lagoon under a waterfall. Order a seaside dinner of bronzed diver scallops with pea sprouts in a sweet lilikoi beurre blanc.

We returned here, having previously stayed at the former, Poipu Beach Hotel, after it emerged from the hurricane restoration and was rebuilt and renamed. However, the spirit still remains of the same warmth, hospitality, and ohana. Our room was very nice, but the part of this hotel that struck us was the staff and how helpful and well managed the hotel was. A big shout out to Christine, who I believe was the operations manager at the hotel for her fair and considerate management of a problem with the televisions at the hotel. In addition, what a wonderful hotel that not only provides a welcome bottle of wine to it's guest, but also as we were celebrating my wife's birthday, they sent a bottle of champagne to our room. Couple that with chocolate treats with turn down service, you get an idea of how nice they are to their guests. We also enjoyed the manager's reception on Wednesday evening with complimentary mai tais, appetizers from the restaurant Red Salt and a chance to talk with management of the hotel. I should also mention that it is beach side at Poipu Beach. We, needless to say, will be back.

The hotel is situated in the perfect spot to enjoy Popui Beach. The grounds are well looked after and the staff are very nice and helpful. We only ate once in the red salt restaurant and had our most expensive and worst meal on our trip. We will probably stay somewhere else next time. Overall it's a beautiful place to stay but way over priced for what you get.

Ko'a Kea is a smaller resort, by Poipu and Kauai standards. Sees to be kind of a secret. It's tucked away in a beautiful niche between two great beaches and near lots of dining options. It's restaurant, Red Salt, is one of the best (as a plus, it also has A/C, which may provide a comfortable alternative from time to time). We stayed in a full ocean view room with a SPECTACULAR view. Ko'a Kea is quieter that other Poipu resorts. It seems to attract the romantically inclined & honeymoon guests. Not too many kids here (they are welcome, but families seem to choose larger resorts.) Peace, privacy are a welcome change for frequent travelers. Service and staff are TOTALLY FIVE STAR.

We were glad we chose a smaller boutique hotel for our honeymoon in sunny Poipu. Overall, we were delighted with the Koa Kea Hotel & Resort. Our initial check in was a bit of a kerfuffle. The room we were given was at the back of the hotel: dark with a tiny glimpse of the ocean and a very loud air-conditioning unit that sounded like we were in an airport. Once the hotel front desk changed us to a better room we were a lot happier and relaxed...although the next problem presented itself in an incorrect bill and a large authorisation taken off our debit card. Again, the front desk did their best to rectify the problem and all was sorted. The resort is beautifully situated in Poipu and near great restaurants and beaches. The staff were friendly and helpful. The valet guys were lovely (although we thought the water sports man was not very helpful and we ended up booking stuff through a company off-site) The rooms although small were nicely appointed and comfortable. One of our highlights was the sushi bar and Chef Justin- who we thought was not only talented but hilarious. Would we stay again? Definately. Although next time, we would make sure we booked an ocean view room on the bottom floor.

The people here could not have been nicer to us -- especially the valets, the housekeepers, the folks at the pool bar, and the front desk. The location is great. And the view from our room (we had a ground floor ocean front) was wonderful. But. . . In this price range the rooms need to be better. The 2009 remodel is showing its age and, in any event, did not do enough to upgrade the "bones" of what I suspect was built as a fairly modest hotel. Here are the things I wish could be made better: 1. AC units need to be quiet. 2. Mini fridges need to be quiet. 3. Turning on the bathroom light should not flood the bedroom with light. 4. The shared walls and the connecting doors need to be made much, much more soundproof. You really can hear a lot from your neighbors. (Our's, fortunately, figured this out fairly quickly -- but we were very close to having to change rooms.)
