Koa Kea Hotel & Resort in Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

Waves crash near the lanais of Koa Kea Hotel & Resort's oceanfront guestrooms, a collection of low-profile buildings that blend with the nature around them. Inside, fresh flowers accent simple, modern island dcor and art prints of coral. Koa Kea means "white coral," a tribute to the life-giving power of the reefs. According to Hawaiian mythology, coral is the goddess granddaughter of the world’s creator. From November to May, Koa Kea’s slice of the Pacific hosts a migration of humpback whales, so keep an eye to the horizon.

Brew a cup of Nespresso coffee and watch the slender white ocean birds dive for their morning meal. Join them on the shore. Beat the noonday sun with a hike through the rainforest on Kuilau or Moalepe Trail – only 10 percent of the Garden Isle is accessible by road. Swim in a secluded lagoon under a waterfall. Order a seaside dinner of bronzed diver scallops with pea sprouts in a sweet lilikoi beurre blanc.

Very nice upscale resort. It is a smaller hotel, never feels very crowded but everything it well done and sophisticated. Always open lounge chairs and room in the pool and hot tub, nice clientele who are active and here to enjoy the island. Very helpful and friendly staff. It has the perfect beach location. We stayed with two teenagers and it was perfect.

Fiance and I had a fantastic time at Koa Kea. We spent 5 nights there for our "pre-honeymoon" after visiting Maui for 7 nights. This hotel was amazing. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. They remembered my fiance and I and asked how we enjoyed the various sights we went to see each day. Special shout-out to Dustin at Valet and Kathleen at the Front Desk. The rooms are nice, but the beds could be better and more supportive. This hotel has a boutique feel. Very personable service at a reasonable price. When we return to Kauai, we will definitely choose Koa Kea again!

While this hotel may not give off a regal feel, it is clean and well maintained. It is a rather small hotel, but that just makes it so much better for a quiet getaway. The staff is incredibly friendly and will go out of their way without you even asking to help you out. I can see why it was rated as one of the top hotels in Hawaii based the hospitality alone. The beach space is somewhat small, but there are plenty of chairs on the lawn overlooking the gorgeous ocean view. The pool is small as well, but very nice. We stayed during a sold-out time, and it did not feel crowded at all. While I didn't care for the dark walls and carpet (made it feel a little dreary when the first time seeing the room was late at night without the sunshine), the bathroom was beautiful and clean, and the bed and pillows were great. Red Salt was tasty; I appreciated the chef's flavor compositions. Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Kauai but here.

We fell in love with this boutique hotel in January 2017 - made another trip in May 2017 and it was our friends/family hotel for our wedding in September 2017. Staff - front desk, bell & car: Friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. They went as far as to mail my wedding dress to the preservation company along with a box to our home as we headed off to our honeymoon. They always make our stay relaxing, memorable and worry free! Love the intimacy at the pool along with the fire pits - spent many days/nights hanging out around both! The rooms are kept up nicely and the turn down service is a nice bonus (Hawaiian music playing as you walk into your room). We travel frequently and this is still one of our favorite places (top 3) to stay!

Going to Kauai for a week was a great decision. But the best decision was staying at the Ko’a Kea. If you’re looking for a big, impersonal hotel, don’t stay here — go to the Grand Hyatt. But if you want a location where you have everything you need — great beach, great pool, great pool bar, great restaurant, terrific rooms, all with attentive and friendly staff — the Ko’a Kea is the place for you. My wife and I will be back, hopefully soon.
