Koa Kea Hotel & Resort in Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

Waves crash near the lanais of Koa Kea Hotel & Resort's oceanfront guestrooms, a collection of low-profile buildings that blend with the nature around them. Inside, fresh flowers accent simple, modern island dcor and art prints of coral. Koa Kea means "white coral," a tribute to the life-giving power of the reefs. According to Hawaiian mythology, coral is the goddess granddaughter of the world’s creator. From November to May, Koa Kea’s slice of the Pacific hosts a migration of humpback whales, so keep an eye to the horizon.

Brew a cup of Nespresso coffee and watch the slender white ocean birds dive for their morning meal. Join them on the shore. Beat the noonday sun with a hike through the rainforest on Kuilau or Moalepe Trail – only 10 percent of the Garden Isle is accessible by road. Swim in a secluded lagoon under a waterfall. Order a seaside dinner of bronzed diver scallops with pea sprouts in a sweet lilikoi beurre blanc.

We fell in love with this boutique hotel in January 2017 - made another trip in May 2017 and it was our friends/family hotel for our wedding in September 2017. Staff - front desk, bell & car: Friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. They went as far as to mail my wedding dress to the preservation company along with a box to our home as we headed off to our honeymoon. They always make our stay relaxing, memorable and worry free! Love the intimacy at the pool along with the fire pits - spent many days/nights hanging out around both! The rooms are kept up nicely and the turn down service is a nice bonus (Hawaiian music playing as you walk into your room). We travel frequently and this is still one of our favorite places (top 3) to stay!

Going to Kauai for a week was a great decision. But the best decision was staying at the Ko’a Kea. If you’re looking for a big, impersonal hotel, don’t stay here — go to the Grand Hyatt. But if you want a location where you have everything you need — great beach, great pool, great pool bar, great restaurant, terrific rooms, all with attentive and friendly staff — the Ko’a Kea is the place for you. My wife and I will be back, hopefully soon.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at the Koa Kea in December. We had a magical stay. From the moment we arrived and were greeted by the friendly staff and received beautiful leis, we knew we had landed at wonderful retreat from the world! We had the honeymoon package -- so I loved our gifts of wine and champagne, macadamia nuts, and notes from the hotel manager. My husband and I both travel a lot internationally and domestically for travel. So in a given year, we are in a lot of hotels. The hotel is everything I like in a hotel stay. It's smaller. It's mostly adults. It's quiet. High quality bath amenities. There is small attention to details (from lovely flip flops and plush robes to a rosary in the nightstand). The staff is kind and knowledgeable (thank you valet staff who could pretty much answer anything!) and the meals were delicious (eat the soufflé pancakes). We mostly hung around the hotel. Reading by the pool, and walking down the beach to marvel at monk seals. The nights we didn't want to eat the hotel, it's a really easy to walk across the street to the shopping center. We went there for Puka Dog, Kauai Juice Co, tacos, etc. And its an easy drive to Lihue (eat saimin in Lihue!). Drinks are expensive, but hey, it's our honeymoon and a resort. We didn't mind as they were delicious. Red Salt is yum. We moved North on the island after a few days, but I could have happily stayed at the Koa Kea the whole time. We will be back! Thank you for a memorable stay! The Johnsons

My husband and I started our honeymoon in Maui for four nights and then ended our week vacation for the last 3 days in Kauai at Koa Kea resort. We were so impressed with this resort and both agreed we wished we would of had more time in Kauai. We had a partial ocean view room it was on the first level. Really couldn't see too much of it since we were right outside the pool area. The room was clean but small compared to our last hotel but what I can say that is truly amazing is THAT BED. The comforter, feather bed and duvet are to die for literally the most comfy bed I've ever slept on. My husband and I both requested information on its bedding when we left because of how comfortable it was. The bathroom was very spacious and had a nice big shower, there is no tub. The pool service was very good loved the coconut/pineapple mojito and my husband enjoyed the local beers. Hot tub is spacious and nice as well. Food was great, $$$ pricey but good. We only had breakfast at Red Salt but it was very good. I liked that this resort was located right on the beach. We were pleasantly surprised that the luah we booked was at the neighboring hotel "Sheraton" right along the beach we were able to walk to it from our hotel. Overall friendly staff and great accomodations!

We ‘hotel-hopped’ while in Kauai and so far Ko’a Kea is the best. It’s boutique style and personal service is amazing. From checking in to checking out, service is top notch. Pros: small feel hotel, great access to pool and beach, and amazing service. You also gets free bottle of wine! Sunset is also amazing, be sure not to miss it. Con: My also complaint is the bedding- although comfortable, the bed was too soft and pillows too high. Overall, I would recommend this hotel if you’re staying in Poipu. You won’t regret it.
