Koa Kea Hotel & Resort in Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

Waves crash near the lanais of Koa Kea Hotel & Resort's oceanfront guestrooms, a collection of low-profile buildings that blend with the nature around them. Inside, fresh flowers accent simple, modern island décor and art prints of coral. Koa Kea means "white coral," a tribute to the life-giving power of the reefs. According to Hawaiian mythology, coral is the goddess granddaughter of the world’s creator. From November to May, Koa Kea’s slice of the Pacific hosts a migration of humpback whales, so keep an eye to the horizon.

Brew a cup of Nespresso coffee and watch the slender white ocean birds dive for their morning meal. Join them on the shore. Beat the noonday sun with a hike through the rainforest on Kuilau or Moalepe Trail – only 10 percent of the Garden Isle is accessible by road. Swim in a secluded lagoon under a waterfall. Order a seaside dinner of bronzed diver scallops with pea sprouts in a sweet lilikoi beurre blanc.

Koa Kea is not your typical Hawaii hotel. There are no timeshare units, crowds, or kids and this was definitely one of our most enjoyable visits to Kauai. I'm so glad we picked this property. It's a smaller hotel, nice and kept up well. I honestly think we had the best room in the place; first floor, ocean front (with patio, lounge chairs, small breakfast table (and our own pet chickens)), and a locking screen on the patio door (which made us feel ok leaving the glass door open to listen to the crashing waves; heaven). There is a nice ocean-front walking path right there and if you walk to the next property over you can find those screaming kids playing "Marco Polo", then wander back to your nice, quiet pool :) The on-property restaurant is top-notch for a special meal. We had an anniversary dinner at Red Salt. One of my favorite routines we got into was heading out for a morning walk and finishing with breakfast across the street at Little Fish. Great Hawaiian coffee, Acai bowls & breakfast sandwiches at good (non-resort) prices. So there's a lot to love, but a few things that could be improved, IMHO. The biggest issue we had was with seating by the pool. People left towels on the chairs which didn't get picked up regularly by staff, so it was very hard to tell if chairs were occupied or not. Not a thing during the week, but on the weekend when the hotel was crowded, it became uncomfortable asking everyone if a seat was taken. At one point, a guy took my husband's clothing, book & towel off his lounge chair and put them on the ground to take his seat while we were in the pool. What? Who does that? Kind of annoying and I think a regular sweep of used towels would easily fix the issue. Also didn't love being forced to valet park. The hotel handled it well; they were quick and didn't charge for in/out or anything, but it made it prohibitive to just run out to the store. Plus you feel compelled to tip every time, even though they tell you it isn't required. I'd rather have free access to my car. Other than these two minor areas, this hotel really shines. Excellent, helpful, friendly staff, beautiful grounds, quiet pool (with food & drinks available to order), nice restaurant, larger sleeping rooms. We would return without hesitation and I recommend it highly.

Everything about this hotel is perfection....service, food, drinks, rooms. They really are so friendly and make you feel welcome. The days we lounged by the pool the service was great, we wouldn't need to leave our lounge chair for drinks and lunch! The rooms were perfect and bathrooms were huge! Their restaurant, Red Salt, was very good, we enjoyed breakfast and dinner a few times. The best thing about this hotel is that it small and intimate. I can't say one negative thing!

Koa Kea is one of the nicest places I have ever stayed. The view, room, amenities, staff and all of the perks were top notch. Shyla and Kristine at the front desk were so nice and took such great care of us. The valet guys helped with directions and recommendations and helped with all of our needs, also. When I go back to Kauai, I will absolutely stay here and would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting. Thank you for making our vacation extra special!
