Koa Kea Hotel & Resort in Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

Waves crash near the lanais of Koa Kea Hotel & Resort's oceanfront guestrooms, a collection of low-profile buildings that blend with the nature around them. Inside, fresh flowers accent simple, modern island décor and art prints of coral. Koa Kea means "white coral," a tribute to the life-giving power of the reefs. According to Hawaiian mythology, coral is the goddess granddaughter of the world’s creator. From November to May, Koa Kea’s slice of the Pacific hosts a migration of humpback whales, so keep an eye to the horizon.

Brew a cup of Nespresso coffee and watch the slender white ocean birds dive for their morning meal. Join them on the shore. Beat the noonday sun with a hike through the rainforest on Kuilau or Moalepe Trail – only 10 percent of the Garden Isle is accessible by road. Swim in a secluded lagoon under a waterfall. Order a seaside dinner of bronzed diver scallops with pea sprouts in a sweet lilikoi beurre blanc.

Koa Kea was amazing. Small - boutique hotel located right on the water in between two beach fronts (fully accessible). They have a lawn area with sun chairs, pool and a very very good restaurant. Loved our stay at the Koa Kea. They took great care of us, everyone is overly friendly and helpful. Highly recommended for an adult get-away (we didn't see many/any kids, but they would be welcome). Pro Tips: *For breakfast they offer: 1) Continental Buffet (cheese/meat, fruit, pastries, cereal) 2) Breakfast Buffet (Continental plus a hot entry - eggs, pancakes, etc) 3) Entry (eggs, pancakes, waffles, etc) *Its a resort, so drinks/food are very pricey. Buy your own wine/beer at the grocery store (you do get a "free" bottle of wine when you check in!) *There is a shopping village across the street which has shopping (duh) and several more cost effective options for eating (Keoki's $$, Bangcok Bowl $, Puka Dog $, Island Taco $). *The hotel is VALET only. I believe its included in your resort fees, just don't be surprised. *Walk down the beach (past the Marriott) in the mornings and you will almost always see Monk Seals and Sea Turtles lounging on the beach.

We enjoyed our stay at the Koa Kea. The rooms are on the small side and include balconies big enough to dine on. We were initially surprised and a little disappointed to discover that our ocean view room wasn’t beach front. In spite of this we enjoyed the view. The staff were very friendly and really make an effort and other than at breakfast the service was great. The problem at breakfast was that we had a couple of special requests-peanut butter, soy milk and olive oil and on most mornings it took an unusually long time to be served and only after asking several times. The hotel is a short walk to Poipu Beach Park. Great snorkelling and lots of wild life. One morning we saw seven giant tortoises laying eggs on the beach, a pod of dolphins and a monk seal. We would definitely stay at the hotel again.

Site: excellent Room: tastefully put together, comfortable, good lighting Housekeeping: quite good, eventually, but it took three days for our preferences to trickle down from management to staff Restaurant/Bar: restaurant fare is mediocre, uninteresting, overcooked, and expensive for what it is Atmosphere: if the feel of a sports bar is what you seek, poolside at Koa Kea is the place for you… loud football, talking heads, television commercials, etc. blaring from the bar area … our suggestions to the manager were not acknowledged. We booked a week here before heading to Maui and have a couple more days before we leave… since we like a mellow place to hang out and not just a base from which to depart every day for meals and entertainment, we probably will not come back here.

I agree with all the good things reviewers have said about this hotel. Whether it meets the status of "Luxury" I'm not so sure. What I liked most was the low volume of guests and all adults the week we stayed. The cleanliness and housekeeping service were top notch and I liked turn down service because of the towel, water, and shampoo replacements in the evening. The ice bucket and chocolate was a very nice touch. The housekeeping services really deserve praise. All the staff were very professional and friendly. I have seen the complaints about the need for car valet service. I observed that it would become very congested around the entrance without it so I came to appreciated that service very much. And, I didn't mind at all tipping for the service as the team was very attentive, very quick and really deserved tips. My only reason for not giving 5 stars was mostly due to the price of cocktails. $17 for a cocktail was well above prices at the surrounding hotels and I think, discouraged guests from spending anytime in the evening around the pool and fire pits. The lack of activity in the evening made the place seem a little dull and boring. Not that I'm advocating party-town at night, but more reasonable drink prices would have encouraged more evening visits to the pool and hot tub that I think would have increased guest enjoyment in general. Overall, I would recommend this hotel.

We recently stayed at the Koa Kea resort. It is a relatively small hotel located on the beach. The room we stayed in was perfect, with a partial ocean view and a patio with chaise and chairs. The pool was steps away. There's a beach rental shop on-site, Hoku Sports, with surfboards, SUP's and snorkel gear. The hotel is within walking distance of Poipu Beach Park which has a larger beach and restrooms. Though one can access the water from the hotel property, there's not much sand at the waters edge. The grounds are impeccable. The restaurant is xlnt. Perhaps what really makes the place outstanding, other than the location, is the staff. All staffers were exceptionally friendly and helpful. My wife wanted to purchase a robe but found nothing in her size. She asked the desk to make certain. Within an hour a robe was delivered to our room. That's good business. We look forward to our next visit.
