Koa Kea Hotel & Resort in Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

Waves crash near the lanais of Koa Kea Hotel & Resort's oceanfront guestrooms, a collection of low-profile buildings that blend with the nature around them. Inside, fresh flowers accent simple, modern island décor and art prints of coral. Koa Kea means "white coral," a tribute to the life-giving power of the reefs. According to Hawaiian mythology, coral is the goddess granddaughter of the world’s creator. From November to May, Koa Kea’s slice of the Pacific hosts a migration of humpback whales, so keep an eye to the horizon.

Brew a cup of Nespresso coffee and watch the slender white ocean birds dive for their morning meal. Join them on the shore. Beat the noonday sun with a hike through the rainforest on Kuilau or Moalepe Trail – only 10 percent of the Garden Isle is accessible by road. Swim in a secluded lagoon under a waterfall. Order a seaside dinner of bronzed diver scallops with pea sprouts in a sweet lilikoi beurre blanc.

This is the friendliest place on the planet. The staff were extraordinary, they helped me hire a car, organised a massage with James of the magical hands, no request was too difficult, barring one - I wanted a teapot to brew looseleaf tea in and they only had mugs and tea bags, no pots. I consoled myself with the Nespresso that is supplied in the room. Waking up to fresh, hot coffee in the room - priceless.

Koa Kea maintains its reputation through service and catering to its niche clientele. Highly recommended for couples especially those seeking a low profile and intimacy. For us, our room had everything except tea and a microwave which was produced upon request. It had a garden view and the flora did not disappoint. I suspect any room higher could only be better. There is no in-room checkout. Parking is all valet. The beach beyond the property and especially the Sheraton's just next to it are ideal for beginner surfers. See Pedro at the surf rentals. He epitomizes the aloha surfer. Just beware of the treacherous beach access towards the Sheraton. 3 people fell using it and I was one of them. Fortunately, I suffered only a minor skin abrasion. End your day at one of the nicest jacuzzis I've ever been in and at the fire pits. I only wish that the pits on time coincided with the jacuzzi evening end.

Excellent location in Poipu, has a very relaxing feel to it. Service was attentive. Rooms are well appointed. It is a quiet resort, not a lot of kids. We visited a couple other resorts, we were glad we were staying at this one. Breakfast has a very good selection.

As a couple, we enjoyed five days at Koa Kea. It was our first time in Hawaii, and Koa Kea and the island of Kauai did not disappoint. The location is obviously the big draw at Koa Kea, and it does not disappoint. We stayed in a room with an ocean view, but I would definitely opt for the ocean front if we were to stay here again. Beyond the views, the food, accommodations, service, pool, and spa were all outstanding. My only complaint was in my interactions with the front desk, who repeatedly had the wrong name on my reservation (still don't know how that happened) and in general seemed a little less zealous to deliver a superb customer/guest experience.

We stayed at the Koa Kea for the third time in February 2018 for 4 nights. It was a getaway for my birthday and as always was a wonderful stay. The location of this hotel is wonderful, the rooms are large and the bathroom is a dream. You get complimentary water every evening and a bottle of wine awaits your arrival. The staff at this property is stellar, they go above and beyond what is expected every single time. From check-in to check-out they have their "A game" on. The only complaint I have is the beds. This is the second time I have noticed that they are way too soft and seem to bow in the middle (all stays we have had a King room garden or partial ocean view). The last time we stayed here about 6 years ago I noticed it, but I thought it was a fluke with the room. But to notice it again, I have to question whether the beds need an upgrade/replacement. Be warned if you have a bad back or need a firmer bed for any reason, after a couple of nights here you will notice it as me and my husband did (we both have minor back issues). Also please keep in mind that this property is valet parking only. They are awesome and get your car quickly, most times if you call down just before you leave your room it is waiting for you. But I know not everyone likes valet parking. Also upon check-in, even if you are paid in full, they put a hold on your credit card of $100.00 per night and do this up front (so in our case there was a hold of $400.00 immediately on my credit card upon completing check-in). The final thing is a resort fee of $37.00 + tax per day this pays for the valet parking, internet access, yoga classes and fitness center access. I love this property and nothing would keep me from returning, I don't mind the fees and, as I stated, I love the staff here. They only thing that I am leary about now is the beds.
