Koa Kea Hotel & Resort in Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

Waves crash near the lanais of Koa Kea Hotel & Resort's oceanfront guestrooms, a collection of low-profile buildings that blend with the nature around them. Inside, fresh flowers accent simple, modern island décor and art prints of coral. Koa Kea means "white coral," a tribute to the life-giving power of the reefs. According to Hawaiian mythology, coral is the goddess granddaughter of the world’s creator. From November to May, Koa Kea’s slice of the Pacific hosts a migration of humpback whales, so keep an eye to the horizon.

Brew a cup of Nespresso coffee and watch the slender white ocean birds dive for their morning meal. Join them on the shore. Beat the noonday sun with a hike through the rainforest on Kuilau or Moalepe Trail – only 10 percent of the Garden Isle is accessible by road. Swim in a secluded lagoon under a waterfall. Order a seaside dinner of bronzed diver scallops with pea sprouts in a sweet lilikoi beurre blanc.

Stayed here for 4 nights in a deluxe oceanfront room. Highly recommend this resort. Friendly staff, great location! Great place for couples, as it's not really a kid friendly resort. Feels secluded, even though it's sandwiched between the Sheraton and Marriott properties. Truly a relaxing part of our trip to Kauai. Highly recommend pre-ordering the breakfast package -- well worth it, and the food was amazing.

We loved staying at the Koa Kea resort. The beachfront location is great and various shops and restaurants are within walking distance. The resort itself is peaceful, relaxing, and everyone who works there is friendly. We will definitely come back! One wish: more gluten-free + vegetarian menu items at Red Salt (which is an amazing restaurant!)

The rooms are lovely, we're so glad we went ocean front, was so nice to sit on the lanai and see and hear the waves. Once the doors are closed though, you have darkness and silence from the outside world. Our biggest issue was a very noisy air conditioner compressor in our room and the hallway. They both clanked as the air con kicked in and it would wake us. We either had to have the air con off to sleep or have it so cold it didn't turn off. Be sure to check if this is an issue. The restaurant Red Salt is worth a visit, well cooked food, but it is pricey. Definitely try the soufflé special for breakfast! The laundry facilities are great- $1 wash (need quarters) $1 dry on high heat (anything lower wasn't long enough). The pool is lovely and private and large... Plenty of room, even if it's a busier day. The spa is the best one we've experienced, it's really large and curves so several groups can be in it and still have separation. The spa experience was more expensive that we'd ever imagined, even for a hotel, and it was a mixed experience- we didn't book again. The valets were really great, especially Mike! You'll definitely want a car so you can get around so see this beautiful island. The desk staff are nice, but very formal and by the book, sometimes we found them a bit too rigid. But they let us use a room to shower and change after a morning of rafting bride we had to get to the airport, which was just a lifesaver! I'd stay again and recommend this place.

I loved the personal feel of this chic, understated boutique hotel and super friendly staff. The rooms and bathrooms are nicely renovated and the location in front of the beach is great. The breakfast is fantastic, lobster eggs benedict did not disappoint! The pool staff is super attentive, the call buttons at each beach chair are a nice touch for instant service. Overall a perfect and intimate stay in Poipu. Highly Recommend!

We stayed at the Koa Kea for 7 nights. It's was truly a wonderful treat. The rooms were delightful and immaculately clean. The grounds were constantly being kept up and cleaned. The staff was nothing but incredibly friendly and would bend over backwards to any legitimate request (special drinks, coming back later to make up room, tweaking menu options). The pool and bar service was prompt and amazing with remotes to call an attendant over for food/drink. Daily breakfast was delicious. Dinner at red salt was a little pricey, but well worth the quality and service. Even the valets were quick with recommendations for food and evening activities. There is nothing negative I can say about this place. The room refrigerators were more than ample and I am going to dearly miss my morning Nespresso coffees. This place might be a little more pricey than other spots, but it was worth every penny. I hope to come back.
