The Heathman Hotel, Portland in Portland, Oregon

The Heathman Hotel Portland is one of only 30 hotels in the world to enjoy a four-diamond rating for 27 consecutive years. And that’s not the only reason why a stay here is memorable. Bright, eclectic rooms compliment an art collection that includes Henk Pender and Andy Warhol, and a cozy lending library stocks signed editions by authors who have stayed there – more than 2,500 titles to date, all available to be delivered to your bedside. A recent landfill-free “green” renovation makes this pet-friendly hotel one of the best environmental options in Portland.

Explore the Pearl District, stopping to shop in local boutiques and bookstores. Take a midday yoga class. Unwind further with a craft microbrew. Back at the hotel, listen to live jazz next to the fireplace in the hotel’s original eucalyptus-paneled Tea Court Lounge. Sample Kumamoto oysters followed by a leg of bacon-wrapped venison, or opt for a creative vegan tasting menu.

The hotel is beautiful albeit pricey. The staff members are friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and clean. They have a complimentary cocktail hour which is a nice touch. We were able to walk to nearby breweries in the Pearl district. All great, right??? NO..... We waited 40 minutes for our breakfast to be served. Our server was apologetic, and nice. When the food arrived it was literally burnt, as in black. NOT an exaggeration. My husband's biscuit (breakfast sandwich) was black on top and bottom. Who serves this??? And, in a luxury hotel, and highly regarded restaurant? Completely unacceptable. The manager, Michael, never came over to our table to apologize. That was shameful! He was aware of the situation because our server told him. Yet, he never came over to speak to us. Terrible customer relations!

Really enjoyed my stay at THe Heathman. Had a great old school/historic vibe. Rooms were well appointed and comfortable. Can't say enough about staff and concierge...fell over themselves helping us. Added plus is a great location...when you can walk to Powells what else do you need?

Valet parking was fine. No problems. Check-in was confusing. We had booked two rooms, one for my wife and I, one for our in-laws. We arrived separately, and somehow ended up in the same room. Had to sort that out. Our room was fine, what we'd expect for the price. The bedding/furnishings are nice. The mini-bar is well-stocked. There are no instructions given at check-in or in the room with respect to wifi or TV channels. We called on the hotel room phone for a channel guide which arrived promptly on a printed piece of paper, but which didn't correspond to the actual channels on the TV. Bummer. We never found any written wifi connectivity instructions. There is an unsecured Heathman wifi channel which we discovered in the wifi settings on our cellphone. The makeup light in the bathroom is burnt out. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant, "Headwaters". Service was good, the food was decent but unremarkable. Drinks were good. Overall, the Heathman has this reputation for being a top flight hotel. Our overall experience is of a decent accommodation, but one that falls short of expectations.

We had a Stanford alumni group, and the Heathman made it easy for us all. The dining facilities were convenient and excellent. The public spaces were welcoming. The staff was courteous and helpful. We loved it.
