Reviews for The Nines, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Portland

Fake luxury. Bad air quality and old beds.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 19 hours ago

The rooms are pretty gross. The air quality is terrible. No ventilation and hard to take a deep breath. Ugly wall paper. The beds are sunken in and hurt my back. On the 10th floor there’s a booming rules that comes from inside the walls every ten minutes that permitted your earplugs and keeps you awake all night after the music in the square subsides at 10:30pm. Very disappointed with my stay here. The receptionist was kind and moved me to another room that was bigger but still would not recommend this place.

Great Hotel, Great Staff

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

Beautiful, clean, comfortable rooms and excellent staff. I always stay here when I’m in Portland and it’s always great. Jayden at the front desk was incredibly helpful getting me checked in after a long flight delay. He also helped me get all the visa materials for my international trip printed off and ready. Amazing, professional customer service.

The Nines: A Step Above the Rest

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

The Nines is absolutely one of my favorite places to stay! The staff is always so accommodating, welcoming, and incredibly professional. And you simply cannot beat the restaurants inside the hotel. Departure is amazing, and Urban Farmer is fantastic as well. I highly recommend The Nines—it truly is a step above the rest! 🎉🎉🎉🎊🎊🎊

Excellent location, large quiet room

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

We stayed here three nights as part of a business trip. We chose The Nines because of its location, it had a decent-sized gym, and it got good reviews. We had a king bed superior room. We were mostly really pleased with our stay. The bed and pillows were comfy, and we slept very well. The bedroom and bathroom were spacious, and the hotel was able to honor our request for a quiet room, which was way in the corner of the building and really, really quiet. The décor was a riff on Hollywood Regency with blasts of turquoise, and it’s not necessarily what we’d choose to relax in, but it works. Our room was pretty clean but did have some “been having guests for a while” bits like grime along the bottom of the couch and some big marks on the walls, but nothing egregious. The bathroom had tons of nice towels (yay!). The shower’s water temperature was great, but the bathroom water pressure was not great. The temperature in the room itself was very, very cold on first entering, and it was a challenge to regulate the temperature consistently over three days. The room’s lighting and switches were intuitive – double yay, as this is a design rarity lately, and weird lighting is one of our pet peeves in hotels. TV has somewhat limited channels. Good-sized closet with plenty of hangers and a safe. The hotel doesn’t have the typical complimentary water bottles in the rooms, but they have large empty bottles you can fill up at water/ice stations on each floor. The room’s coffee maker is a basic Nespresso, but there is also free coffee in the morning in the beautifully-designed lobby (along with some pastries near the restaurant one morning!). There is a mini fridge in the room, but it’s completely useless as it’s chock full of their own pricey (with an extra 22% “service charge” tacked on…) electronic-sensor mini bar items, along with a draconian placard warning about not moving any items in the fridge or on the shelf above, or you will be automatically charged. This happened to us with a packet of candy that got moved accidentally (and they did remove the charge at the front desk with no further issue). Still, it’s a 1990s-era business-hotel thing that we feel is annoying and should totally go away. The hotel’s location is excellent for all the things we could easily walk to, and an extra bonus, as long as valet staff aren't super busy, is the hotel’s courtesy car ride to any place within a short distance (i.e., not the airport!) away. This is a fantastic perk of The Nines because it allowed us not to have to rent a car. There is a resort fee (…) but this includes a $15 daily credit at the restaurant, which we easily spent at breakfast/brunch at Urban Farmer. Urban Farmer was fine; we always found something to eat although the menu wasn’t huge. The oatmeal, fruit juice elixers, salmon bagel and chicken sandwich hit the spot. Staff seemed overwhelmed at times, and it takes some time to get seated and/or served when it’s not sparsely populated with guests. The front desk staff were all great. The gym is large with a huge collection of free weights – you’re totally taken care of if you want to give 100-lb bicep curls a go! – some weight training machines, Pelotons, treadmills, some unfortunately dated/put out to pasture ellipticals (two of the four were broken), along with a separate smaller room with stability balls, BOSU, some bands, mats etc. As an interesting people-watching event from our safe place in the cardio area on Saturday morning, there was a cadre of Adidas-clad guys noisily commandeering the entire weight part of the gym for an hour or so, which we later found out was part of a Mexican pro soccer team staying at the hotel. All in all, The Nines had some quirks, but the sleep quality, the room size and the location were excellent, and if there was another trip to Portland in our future, we’d definitely consider staying there again.
