Reviews for The Nines, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Portland

Excellent location, large quiet room

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 11 hours ago

We stayed here three nights as part of a business trip. We chose The Nines because of its location, it had a decent-sized gym, and it got good reviews. We had a king bed superior room. We were mostly really pleased with our stay. The bed and pillows were comfy, and we slept very well. The bedroom and bathroom were spacious, and the hotel was able to honor our request for a quiet room, which was way in the corner of the building and really, really quiet. The décor was a riff on Hollywood Regency with blasts of turquoise, and it’s not necessarily what we’d choose to relax in, but it works. Our room was pretty clean but did have some “been having guests for a while” bits like grime along the bottom of the couch and some big marks on the walls, but nothing egregious. The bathroom had tons of nice towels (yay!). The shower’s water temperature was great, but the bathroom water pressure was not great. The temperature in the room itself was very, very cold on first entering, and it was a challenge to regulate the temperature consistently over three days. The room’s lighting and switches were intuitive – double yay, as this is a design rarity lately, and weird lighting is one of our pet peeves in hotels. TV has somewhat limited channels. Good-sized closet with plenty of hangers and a safe. The hotel doesn’t have the typical complimentary water bottles in the rooms, but they have large empty bottles you can fill up at water/ice stations on each floor. The room’s coffee maker is a basic Nespresso, but there is also free coffee in the morning in the beautifully-designed lobby (along with some pastries near the restaurant one morning!). There is a mini fridge in the room, but it’s completely useless as it’s chock full of their own pricey (with an extra 22% “service charge” tacked on…) electronic-sensor mini bar items, along with a draconian placard warning about not moving any items in the fridge or on the shelf above, or you will be automatically charged. This happened to us with a packet of candy that got moved accidentally (and they did remove the charge at the front desk with no further issue). Still, it’s a 1990s-era business-hotel thing that we feel is annoying and should totally go away. The hotel’s location is excellent for all the things we could easily walk to, and an extra bonus, as long as valet staff aren't super busy, is the hotel’s courtesy car ride to any place within a short distance (i.e., not the airport!) away. This is a fantastic perk of The Nines because it allowed us not to have to rent a car. There is a resort fee (…) but this includes a $15 daily credit at the restaurant, which we easily spent at breakfast/brunch at Urban Farmer. Urban Farmer was fine; we always found something to eat although the menu wasn’t huge. The oatmeal, fruit juice elixers, salmon bagel and chicken sandwich hit the spot. Staff seemed overwhelmed at times, and it takes some time to get seated and/or served when it’s not sparsely populated with guests. The front desk staff were all great. The gym is large with a huge collection of free weights – you’re totally taken care of if you want to give 100-lb bicep curls a go! – some weight training machines, Pelotons, treadmills, some unfortunately dated/put out to pasture ellipticals (two of the four were broken), along with a separate smaller room with stability balls, BOSU, some bands, mats etc. As an interesting people-watching event from our safe place in the cardio area on Saturday morning, there was a cadre of Adidas-clad guys noisily commandeering the entire weight part of the gym for an hour or so, which we later found out was part of a Mexican pro soccer team staying at the hotel. All in all, The Nines had some quirks, but the sleep quality, the room size and the location were excellent, and if there was another trip to Portland in our future, we’d definitely consider staying there again.

Dream to disappointment

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

I need to start this off by saying that I waited a few days to post this to cool off...but I am still as angry as I was. Luxury? Yeah right. More like spend hundreds for a special anniversary weekend and be completely disappointed. This was a dream for me to stay here. I came here every Christmas as a child and when they opened The Nines I took a tour with my hospitality and tourism class. I loved it. And we came to celebrate our 9th anniversary, trying to come together and relax after losing our son 4 days post birth couple months back I guess I'll start in order of events. To be honest I have no idea if the Mexican soccer team staying there made us seem less important to them but we paid for a luxury experience and that is anything but what we got. At close to noon I called to see if they had any ability to make an early check in work. Which is totally understandable. They said no, but our room would be ready sometime before 4, she repeated this twice. We arrive at 3:50pm. Our room isn't ready for the 4pm check in. That's ok, we are a bit early. She assured us it wouldn't be long and that she would give us 30.00 credit to use at Departure later as well as the 15.00 credit that stems from the resort fee. Then I ask to reserve car to take is to dinner for our reservationat 6pm. She tells me my room number and I need to ask Valet to do it. I go to Valet and I received a very rude response telling me they don't reserve it and the front desk really needs to stop telling guests that. Fast forward...it is 5:30. We finally get out room,1.5hrs after normal check in. We had ZERO time to relax, shower and even get ready before dinner. After rushing to drop our stuff off in the room...we got to Valet, they didn't have the car available for us so we had to walk. Saw some nice sights and sounds of addicts on our way to dinner we luckily made on time. Then let's talk this room the call a suite...the bed and pillows were fine but once you got into the bathroom really it wasn't the same. The toilet paper was horrible quality...similar tp rv tp. We were missing toiletries like shower caps, there was stains on the walls of the bathrooms and even black mold in the showers we discovered WHILE INSIDE. Then let's get to checkout. Apparently the lady at the front desk from check in, never actually applied either the 30.00 or the 15.00 credits as promised. So we ended up getting attitude from the desk workers fixing that. I couldn't be more disappointed and sadly will never be back and will never tell someone to go there either.

A wonderful stay at The Nines...

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

We booked The Nines for a weekend away in Portland with the family. We had two adjoining rooms that were large and on the 8th floor with the restaurant and bar. This was the same weekend the Club America soccer team was staying at the hotel while they played the Portland Timbers. It was a bit surreal wading through the fans and security to get into the elevator lobby but the hotel staff handled the crowds very well. The location of the hotel cannot be beat. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to and even was able to listen to the live music coming from across the street in Pioneer Square. For those worried about homeless people in the area, there were some but we never felt threatened or overwhelmed by them. In fact, I found downtown to be clean and nice to walk in. Our room had a wonderfully comfortable king bed in addition to a couch with a chaise lounge. It made for a nice place to relax when taking a break from sightseeing in the area. In addition, there was a separate refrigerator and minibar in the room. Although there was live music outside, we never really could hear it from within the room. Occasionally we could hear outside noise but for the most part it was very quiet. The lobby restaurant Urban Farmer was ok. We had breakfast credit and it was fine to have food in the morning but like most hotels, I found the restaurant to be ok but not necessarily worth the price. The bar had a fantastic, albeit expensive, selection of liquors. The rooftop bar was very cool but always crowded. We found a seat one night but it was after the bar closed and it was still busy. On Saturday night, it was hard to even move with all of the people there. It's a small space with a great view so lots of people want to be up there. Where the hotel shines is the staff. They could not have been more friendly. The Concierge, Sheryl, talked with us about our experience with local attractions and restaurants and helped direct us towards the proper train lines. The front desk staff, Ashley, was incredibly helpful with answering questions about in-room charges and making sure we were able to use them before closing out the bill. Overall, we could not have been happier with our choice and will definitely stay at The Nines again.
