Amanzoe in Porto Heli, Greece

A modern hilltop acropolis, Amanzoe is a peaceful retreat from which to explore nature and coastal pleasures along with the ancient heritage of the Peloponnese. Surrounded by undulating olive groves and overlooking the turquoise Aegean Sea, is a ten-minute drive from the tavernas and the cosmopolitan stirrings of Porto Heli. The isles of Spetses and Hydra are nearby, as are countless ancient ruins, from millennia-old amphitheatres to Byzantine monasteries.

Drawing on classic Greek architecture, with strong lines and a pared-back aesthetic, Amanzoe’s standalone Pavilions all open onto terraces with private plunge pools and views of the surrounding land and sea. Each Pavilion is accessed via a stone-walled courtyard, leading to a high-ceilinged living area. Situated directly on the beach, the spacious, air-conditioned Beach Cabanas provide all the comforts of a Pavilion, combined with a terrace, private garden and swimming pool. Guests can enjoy a day on the beach, swimming in the sea, discovering bays by canoe and sunbathing in privacy. Amanzoe’s Villas are cool, spacious abodes surrounded by olive groves. Overlooking the Aegean Sea, each of the four-to-nine-bedroom Villas features an open terrace with sand-coloured marble floors, traditional dry stone-clad walls and concrete columns and cornices. A chef and a host serves each one. Our dining facilities are opened to guests and non-residents. Simple, contemporary Greek and Mediterranean dishes emphasise locally sourced ingredients at Amanzoe, which receives daily deliveries of local bass, bream, grouper and crustacean, as well as locally reared lamb, pork and rabbit. Meals are served in the airy Restaurant, with its deep-blue sea views, as well as at the Pool Terrace, the informal Beach Club or surrounded by candles in private. The holistic healing of Hippocrates are the inspiration for Amanzoe’s light-filled 2,850-square-metre Spa, combining diet, gymnastics, exercise, massage and sea bathing with modern natural products and treatments. A gym is also available, and studios host yoga and Pilates sessions.

After 20 years visiting Aman, I was forced to change because of the lack of flexibility of Amanzoe. They wanted to force my kids os 13 and 11 years to stay alone in a pavillion. Unaceptable. Amanzoe is Not a Family Friendly Resort. I cannot believe how this misconduct can jeopardize a 20 years of loyalty.

An absolutely wonderful stay from start to finish! The resort is at the southern end of the Argolis and is a 2½-hour or so drive from Athens. There are plenty of twists and turns as you climb and descend the numerous hills and mountains on the way there (did not realize how altitudinous the Greek mainland was!). Rather than driving from Athens, you have the alternative of taking a hydrofoil from Athens to Porto Heli and picking up a rental car there. This puts you right next to Amanzoe and believe it or not, takes about the same amount of time as driving there yourself. We plan to use this approach next time. This was our first Aman stay and I can say, we enjoyed it immensely (I’m not sure I care to visit any other Aman Resorts!). The staff is superb and several receive and bid you farewell each time you come and go from the resort. I don’t think we’ve ever felt so pampered, anywhere. The grounds are exquisite and present the impression of being in a classical Greek compound. The stony architecture is lovely and you will appreciate an abundance of scented plants, ancient olive trees, and romantically subdued evening lighting. Our pavilion room was sensational! I can’t even begin to convey how much we enjoyed it. Large in size and with two bathroom wings, you can practically lose yourselves in it. In the center of the bathroom area was a double-headed marble shower replete with a host of excellent quality toiletries. Each pavilion has its own soak pool with views out over the Aegean. Sitting on the veranda and gazing out to the distant island scenery is both relaxing and mesmerizing. If this hadn’t been our first visit to Greece, I could have easily plopped myself in front of that view and whiled away our entire visit there. It’s that dramatic. The gym looks incredible, but we did not use it during our five days. The restaurant is romantic and the food filling, but some dishes could stand a more gourmet improvisation. We are picky travelers and I can say with certainty, Amanzoe is among the top five places we have ever stayed. A stay here will leave you with indelible memories.

Stayed here for about a week in lowish season. It was the last leg of my Italian/Greek honeymoon. Saved the best for last and my expectations were quite high after staying in Amanpulo in the past. Positives - great service, pleasant staff, engaged management that rectified issues quickly - villa/property design is nice and incorporates “Greek elements” - views from our garden villa were nice, lots of bushes and shrubs... very country side-esque - food was good (loved the breakfasts) and the chef went out of his way to honour my quirky requests which was VERY much appreciated. - overall tranquil vibe throughout the property with beautiful sunset - state of the art gym Other notes - no kid free zone/pools which takes away from the idea that amanzoe literally means “place of peace and tranquility” Hard to enjoy peace and quiet if there are misbehaved screaming children at the pools, beach, dinner etc. But what can you do I guess. - not a very swimmable beach, surprised that they chose such a location. The country side is stunning but was expecting a nicer beach. Overall I was happy with my stay. The villa was the best place to truly relax without any disturbances. The countryside is unique and I very much enjoyed the drive to the resort. I will continue to explore other aman properties, but I don’t think I would return to this one based one the notes above.

This may be the finest hotel in the world. It misses nothing. The food is amazing, the accommodations are amazing and the service is next to none. I had heard this place was special, but I needed to see it for myself. Go.

This is completely flawless. Beautifully designed, very well run indeed, with fantastic staff, great management, amazing food. Completely unshowy intuitive service. Stayed for the second time last week, with my wife and son; we couldn't have had a better week. Only problem with staying here is that staying anywhere else will feel a let down after you have stayed here.
