With a historic city center designated a UNESO World Heritage Site, and robust cultural pride and charm, the city of Porto, Portugal is a quintessential taste of Europe. Housed in a former palace dedicated as a national monument, the luxurious Pousada do Porto, Palácio do Freixo is situated on the banks of the Douro River, and provides a splendid respite during your time in town. Beautiful baroque construction, originally designed by renowned Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, stands fully restored and refurbished as a modern day testament to the hotel's storied and regal past. Juxtaposed to the palace's grand and time-honored exterior, yet blended seamlessly in harmony, guest rooms are decidedly contemporary in style. Sleek lines, minimalist décor, and modern amenities grace the 87 total rooms and suites, which all include air conditioning, complimentary Internet access, LCD satellite televisions, and mini bars. Views peer out over the scenic river and palace grounds, offering a private sanctuary in which to unwind and relax.

The rooms are clean and perfectly functional. The old building is beautiful with lovely rooms to eat and meet in. The old industrial building is a touch boring but functional with mightily confusing layout. Our room looked out on the neighbouring lite industry though…. Staff all good and professional. Breakfast excellent. Large car park. Shuttle to town not working but the walk in is nice enough and an uber back was circa 6 euros.

Spent our first three nights at the Pestana resort and generally we were very happy with the stay. The property is very interesting having been an old cereal mill before being converted to a hotel. The rooms were spacious and clean although the carpet showed wear and stained. We did dine in the hotel restaurant on our last night and had a wonderful meal and the service was very attentive and pleasant. Buffet breakfast offered many options and the views from some of the tables were picturesque. For some reason the coffee was extremely strong (even for Europe), so we had to ask for hot water each day to dilute it. The hotel is about a mile and a half walk along the Douro River to the center of Porto and if you like exercise (which we do), it was a nice option to stretch our legs before taking on the hills of Porto. There was a car show during our stay which created several inconveniences for our party. For two days, they did not offer menu options at breakfast as they had to support the reception area for the show. On returning from a day in Porto, our tour guide was not provided access to the hotel and the communication with the hotel management was not handled well. We did discuss this with the manager later and he apologized and the did accommodate our party with a discount on the dinner along with a round of port.

We recently stayed here for one week to celebrate my wife’s 50th Birthday. I wanted it to be a special experience and this hotel really did deliver in every aspect. The hotel and it’s surroundings and the rooms in an adjacent building are just stunningly beautiful and unique. Our room was quiet, spacious and had wonderful views up and down the Douro River. Breakfast was a sumptuous feast with a huge variety of items on offer for the buffet. All the staff were very polite and friendly and went above and beyond to help us during our stay. Overall, we had an amazing week here and I’m so glad I chose this hotel to celebrate this special occasion. Thank you so much “Team Pestana Palacio do Freixo” for helping us create such a memorable stay in this stunning hotel and the beautiful city of Porto.

Nice hotel, listed building. Friendly staff. Excellent breakfast, shuttle available, close to centre Max.10 min drive. The only thing l did not like is the dark colour painting of the walls and felt insufficient light in the room evening time. The bedrooms are in a separate building attached to the main beautiful building of the hotel.
