Be aware - this hotel is in desperate need of a refurbishment. It is extremely expensive and is only 3* at best. You have to pay in full at check in on the mainland before setting foot on the island - before seeing the hotel. We booked a 7 night stay in an Ocean Villa and moved out after 1 night. The air conditioning didn't work. We had a leak through the ceiling in the bathroom. Generally rough around the edges. DO NOT EXPECT A 5 STAR RESORT.

The Gayana Eco Resort is a really nice place to spend some days. The service is good, but because the staff tries to hard (and is drilled strictly) the contact is formal and following that also pretty impersonal. The villas are amazing, the breakfast is amazing and the view is amazing. For snorkeling, i advice to go to Bunga Raya (the sister resort), where the reef is abundant of life! The prices for lunch and dinner are high compared to KK city, but ok in comparison to for example western Europe. In the photos section i placed a couple of photos from the menu. The eco friendly efforts can be even better when the water for the guest is not distributed with plastic bottles, but by letting guest refill their bottles from water taps. Also, the housekeeping staff would do a good job by not turning on and letting all the lights on when cleaning and not turning on the airconditioning when guest didn't turn it on theirselfs.

Check in and first encounter by Jesselton Point. VIP treatment. But: I was paying it all and the place required cash, which was quite and effort- it means like a withdrawal of two yearly salaries of a Malaysian. Immonen, besides the front desk person tried to count to her own benefit, several times until my friends interrupted. Me and my friends had great expectations after all other experiences and we were in fine clothes, did not want to embark in 5 star resort in nylon rags. Not like backpackers and neither snobby, for own comfort, this was to be the grand finale for our one month trip to Sabah and Malaysia. By arrival we were met with drinks and fragranced napkins. And then led to a hut facing the mountain side, a huge beautiful room and terrace but not the one we paid so much for, we had the the lagoon villa chosen, not the palm villas because we did not like the plastic pools on the terrace, yet the glass floor would have been nice. We were to stay and and after a couple of nights we would get the lagoon villa and a compensation said the manager. We then skipped the moving about, the weather was rainy and this is factor no one can change. Everything but the weather. Breakfast were somewhat 3 star and average and not quite what we antecipated in a 5 star resort, have seen what you usually get in equivalent places.a la carte food in the restaurants was good and we enjoyed the free drinks every afternoon, besides the next two for half price and so on. Free soft drinks all day round. Now reader: I am a used traveller, I save money and work hard for it and then give it a go, I put great effort on choosing places and planning, I do not have more than one month. Year to get somewhere. I work as a chef and have been rating top Lasse restaurants professionally as a part of my carriere and my company are alike, we know something about this. Also what effort it is to pay 5500 MYR for a five night stay and what to expect for the price. I did not expect to find red pills and others hidden under furniture, cockaroaches I can live with, it is a natural thing to occur in tropics, despite stars. The only compensation we got was an extra tax- bill when checking out. Were talking to co- partners in crime, people from Europe. They found the place more three star than five star, then there are people who have this as a treat after a backpacker tour and the meanings are different. Pros: free soft drinks and boat service, first soft drinks free, pasta dishes delicious, local dishes heavenly, tto order part of breakfast fabulous. The staff helpful and kind, room service efficient, lots of place, great snorkeling, MERC fantastic. Fireflies, monkeys, proximity to rainforest. Good shop. Cons: tourist from east made the place look like a cheap motel, pissing in the flower pots and littering the sea. Many prohibits, easy to feel inprisoned, are much more used to be a researching type, adventurous. And self going. With a closer look the tidy room was not so tidy, bedbugs are a part of the tropics and there were free pesticides, but I did not dear to touch the pills found under the bed and drawer...tourism tax twice, Eco tax is ok. Luxury for never tried it before visitors, a stay among many others for us who had tried it all. Neat and nice.

Stayed for 5 night in one of their palm villas which was gorgeous. Thankyou for the upgrade from the ocean villa. Villa was huge and very luxurious. We had a very relaxing time. All staff were very pleasant and the food was good. We enjoyed a couple of visits to Bungaraya which has a beautiful beach At times the resort felt eerily quiet(we stayed Mon to sat). Really nice touch to be able to have breakfast delivered by boat. Wifi was very poor in the villa but reception gave us a mobile dongle which was great . There was the odd bit of trash in the water but not too bad which is quite amazing considering how close the island is to KotaKinabulu ( we thought KK was really dirty) Only negatives for us was the music in the main restaurant which was so repetitive and was really annoying . The other thing was that the ladders into the ocean from the palm villa were too short at low tide so it was very difficult to climb out the water as the first step was at head height ! It was kind of funny but some people would have been stuck in the water
