We had such a wonderful time at this hotel. The whole environment and the views from the top are stunning and the staff is super nice. A special mention for Christina who checked us in and stayed in touch all week. She one of the most helpful, caring and warm hearted people we've met. Zip lining was fun, horseback riding was a blast, and we saw an ocelot on the dusk tour with Jairo! Top notch.

We stayed at this hotel for 6 nights. It is beautiful but I had some concerns. The hotel is spread out. This is great because each family has his own little bungalow. I believe each bungalow has it's own pool - our did. The first night in the hotel I tried to call the front desk and the phone would not work. The only way I could get in touch with them was by using the emergency phone number listed on the phone. The phone was never repaired so we always called the front desk by calling the emergency number. What concerned me was that one morning we called this number to arrange a ride and no one answered! What would have happen if this was a true emergency? The hotel is spread out so it would have been difficult to get to the front desk quickly. On Christmas Eve we went to the special party at the beach. This was awful! They kept running out of food. The food they did have was not that good. More importantly, it was Christmas Eve. They had no music, no entertainment and no strolling Santas. We all left depressed. I liked the hotel. If I went back again I would only go for 3 nights. It is so isolated. The only thing in Punita Islita is the hotel, 2 little restaurants, a church and a grocery store that is 1/2 the size of a 7/11. When you go out to the hotel, stop at a grocery store before getting to Punita Islita and load up on snacks and drinks. Drinks and snacks are expensive at the hotel and the little grocery store does not offer much. Stay off the hopper planes that go to the hotel.

One of the most spectacularly enjoyable weeks in a long time Do you want to see monkeys, learn to surf, sit by the pool, drink in a cabana, take a hike, chase an iguana, lay in the sun, have a massage or simply take a nap, surrounded by staff and management that couldn't be nicer. Then come here Not a mega resort but has so many amenities. You have to have a chill mindset A few things to note. It is far from the airport so plan accordingly, about 3 hours. Due to roads. The resort setup is on a hill so if you have trouble with stairs and want to be near the pool and restaurants then be up top. Beach for you, about a 10 minute walk from bottom. Shuttles are provided but can take time depending on how many people need them. Cabana is awesome and service by beach is phenomenal If have a family I highly recommend the 2 bedroom villas with plunge pool. Nice to have own space. Don't bother paying for fishing on a boat off the beach. (Not affiliated with resort) Way too much money and lucky to catch a single fish. Don't fall for the pictures of someone that just caught loads of fish yesterday. Most people don't. Only area for improvement is food. For the price I believe there could be a bit more variety and higher quality ingredients. This refers mainly to dinner. Lastly, some people complain about the drink and food prices. While not inexpensive, for a resort property where you have no other options around I found cost to be below what you would pay for a meal in most major US cities. And besides, the service is much nicer and so is the weather.

Prior to our recent visit to Hotel Punta Islita, I didn't think any Costa Rican resort could compete with our favorites, Arenas del Mar & Lapa Rios. In fact, Hotel Punta Islita has it all -- beautiful accommodations in a relatively remote, relaxed setting; gorgeous views; easy access to a lovely, near-private beach; exotic birds & butterflies everywhere; an exquisite infinity pool; lots of included activities; a stellar spa; staff who embody true customer service; even very well-stocked mini-bars. :-) There's also a strong commitment to sustainability & to giving back to the community -- values that matter to us. There is one caveat, however: We had reserved a junior suite with ocean view, but when we arrived we were "upgraded" to a 3-bedroom villa. (This was not presented as an option, but rather as a fait accompli.) That might sound like a stroke of good fortune, but for us it proved the opposite. The villa, while lovely, was way too big for two people and way too isolated, and it did not have the ocean view we'd wanted. We had no car, so would have been totally dependent on the hotel's shuttle to go anywhere but the beach -- including to the main hotel, the restaurant, the spa, the infinity pool etc. Fortunately, we voiced our concerns and were able to move on day 2 into the junior suite we'd originally reserved. It was perfect -- lovely, private yet in the heart of the resort, with a perfect ocean view and amenities easily accessible. Not sure exactly how/why this happened, but did meet another couple who'd been similarly upgraded. My suggestion is to be clear on what you really want. The villa experience would have been much different than the one we ended up having -- much more like renting a home than staying at a resort. The villas are spread out over a large area, and because the hotel is on top of a hill (understatement) most are not within walking distance of the spa, restaurant etc. They would be perfect for a larger family or a group of friends, but not so for us. To conclude, we would return to Punta Islita in a heartbeat. Next time, though, we'd insist from the outset on the type of accommodation we'd reserved.

This was our last stop on our 17 day journey discovering Costa Rica and proved to be the perfect place to chill out before going home. There are a range of inclusive activities and others that you pay for should you want to experience them. The setting is idyllic but you need to know that it is built on different levels with steps up and down to dining areas and pools. We made good use of the shuttles to go to the beach and restaurants. We were warmly welcomed by Christina who gave us all the information we needed and was available to answer any questions we had. We enjoyed meals at Cocos (by the beach) and Kambute (in ‘town’). Cocos is quite expensive but Kambute is very reasonable. All the staff are very pleasant and helpful and enjoyed helping us out with our limited Spanish!
