Exceptional stay at Playa Cativo Lodge, Costa Rica

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

Our stay at Playa Cativo Lodge was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we arrived, we knew we had found somewhere truly special — a luxury eco-lodge that perfectly balances being beautifully off-the-grid while still offering every creature comfort. The service was exceptional across the board. Every single team member made us feel genuinely welcomed and cared for. A very special thank you to Mike, Natasha, Alonso, Kenneth, and Alessandro — each of them went above and beyond to ensure our stay was seamless, personalized, and unforgettable. Their warmth, attentiveness, and pride in the property shine through in everything they do. The food deserves its own standing ovation. Every meal was fresh, beautifully presented, absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. You can taste the quality and thoughtfulness in every dish. Dining here feels both elevated and deeply connected to the natural surroundings. The property itself is stunning. The grounds are pristine and meticulously maintained, yet thoughtfully preserved to protect the surrounding habitat and natural beauty. It truly embodies what an eco-lodge should be. The commitment to sustainability is real — they generate their own electricity, provide filtered water, and operate with a deep respect for the environment. Wi-fi was also included and worked exceptionally well for this very remote location. The rooms are gorgeous, well-appointed, and incredibly comfortable. While there is no air conditioning, it honestly isn’t needed (most of the time). The natural ocean breeze combined with the thoughtfully placed fans keeps the rooms perfectly cool and comfortable. It enhances the immersive, nature-connected experience rather than detracts from it. They offer an impressive array of experiences, making it easy to blend relaxation with adventure. The only minor challenge we experienced was some communication difficulty prior to arrival. However, once on property, the team more than made up for it — they went above and beyond to accommodate every request and ensure our time was exactly what we hoped for. We were also fortunate enough to meet the owner, Mark, during our stay. Our conversation with him was warm, genuine, and memorable — a part of our stay that we will truly treasure. It speaks volumes about a place when the owner is present, engaged, and passionate about the experience guests are having. Playa Cativo Lodge is not just a place to stay — it’s a rare and special experience. If you are looking for a true luxury eco-retreat where you can unplug, reconnect with nature, and still enjoy comfort, beauty, and exceptional service, this is it. We cannot wait to return to explore even more that this magical place has to offer!

Highlight of our trip in Costa Rica

This is an exceptional lodge in an exceptional place. It is beautifully conceived, extremely well run and set in virgin forest abundant with monkeys, birds, snakes, spiders and filled with incredibly rare and awesome trees and vegetation.

The sweet spot—rustic luxury.

Playa Cativo is a treasure. From the natural rainforest and Gulf environment to the luxury rooms and spa and restaurant. Everything was excellent and beyond expectations. Special kudos to the staff—friendly, and always going above and beyond. The restaurant was lovely overlooking the property and the golf and the food was excellent – – every single meal was delicious and the fabulous chef was creative and offered a great variety. The on-site, guide personnel, the Spa staff, Iand the servers made the trip memorable. Thank you Cindy, Daisy and Alonso, especially. Wish I could name them all!! Make sure you go on the dolphin watching trip, hikes around the property, snorkeling, and birdwatching. Playa Cativo is Pura Vida!!

Spoiled as if.we were at THE WHITE LOTUS!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

This was exactly like THE WHITE LOTUS, minus the nefarious part of the plot. The staff caters to every need and desire! The property is stunning, with lush tropical gardens and lots of alluring trails. The cabin we stayed in was picture perfect. We were told that a puma lived under our cabin at night time, but we never saw it. Though we heard the monkeys, we never saw one on the property. We did see a beautiful scarlet macaw. The price was very steep, but we went during the dry-high season. My only issue was with the margaritas. They were not good. We tried different flavors, but they all tasted very strange. The piña coladas, on the other hand, were the best in the world. If you need to be spoiled in the middle of the rainforest, this is your place. Oh, if you want to enjoy the best beaches ever, have the resort put together a day trip to Matapalo Beach. This was a better experience than going to Corcovado. The beaches in Hawaii are not as beautiful!
