Reviews for Playa Cativo

A place that stays with you

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 13 hours ago

My boyfriend and I have traveled quite a bit in our lives and have been lucky enough to visit some incredible places around the world, but we both agree that Playa Cativo is at the very top of our list. It’s the most remote destination we’ve ever traveled to, and every mile it took to get there was worth it. I won’t repeat everything that’s already been said because it’s one of those places that’s almost impossible to put into words. The rainforest, the wildlife, the water, and the peacefulness are all extraordinary. You simply have to experience it for yourself. I originally wanted to visit because of the incredible nature and wildlife, and it absolutely delivered. Right on the property we saw agoutis, coatis, howler monkeys, scarlet macaws, toucans, dolphins, and countless other birds and wildlife. During our last-minute trip to Corcovado National Park, we were also lucky enough to see sloths, tapirs, squirrel monkeys, spider monkeys, and even more incredible animals. It was a dream come true. But what surprised me most was that, as unforgettable as the scenery is, it’s the people who make Playa Cativo truly extraordinary. We visited during the off-season, so there were only one or two other couples at the hotel. That created such an intimate atmosphere. Seeing the same smiling faces every morning, afternoon, and evening, sharing stories, laughing together, and getting to know everyone made it feel less like staying at a hotel and more like being welcomed into a family. That feeling is incredibly rare. The entire staff went above and beyond in ways we never expected. They were endlessly accommodating when we wanted to adjust activities, somehow made it possible for us to visit Corcovado National Park at the last minute when permits are normally so difficult to get, and always seemed genuinely invested in making our trip as special as possible. Btw if you go to Corcovado, highly recommend requesting Valeria as your guide!! Pamela made the most beautiful birthday cake for my 30th birthday, and the team created multiple private dinner setups that made each evening feel unique. Mike curated amazing wine pairings, and Alonso even took the time to teach me how to make my favorite Mai Tai (and beat us at chess). A heartfelt thank you to Cindy, the most amazing tour guide ever!!! Ronnie, a fantastic chef putting out Michelin star worthy meals every day. And also Alessandro, Kevin, Laura, Claudia, Eric, Pamela, and everyone else who welcomed us with such kindness. Every interaction felt genuine, thoughtful, and warm. And to Mike and Alonso – you two goofballs are not only some of the best servers we’ve ever had anywhere in the world, but also two of the kindest people we’ve met while traveling. Thank you for making us laugh every day, for treating us like friends while we were thousands of miles from home, and for making my 30th birthday one I’ll never forget. The memories you helped create are ones we’ll carry with us forever. If you’re wondering whether Playa Cativo is worth the journey, the answer is an emphatic yes. It’s a rare place that exceeds every expectation, and has changed my view of travel going forward.

Hide away in paradise

The only thing to out shine the hotel is the staff. The food has been wonderful, tailored to our needs and taste. The chefs Edward and Ronnie has gone above and beyond. The tour guides are knowledgeable and keen to share their insights into Costa Rica. They are lots of fun and interesting tours to do at the hotel. The birds are beautiful, our favourite is the tucan. The grounds and lodges are beautiful and well maintained. If there is an issue it is dealt with promptly. Mike and Alonso have been attentive, helpful and gone the extra mile. Thank you for your patience and service!
