Reviews for Playa Cativo

A truly magical place – made unforgettable by the people

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 23 hours ago

Playa Cativo is one of those rare places that is difficult to adequately describe in a review. The setting is extraordinary — pristine rainforest tumbling down to the shores of the Golfo Dulce, wildlife quite literally all around you, beautiful accommodation and a wonderful sense of being somewhere genuinely remote and special. But what ultimately made our stay exceptional was the people. Cindy, our naturalist, was simply incredible. Her knowledge, enthusiasm and completely natural ability to bring the rainforest to life transformed our nature walks and excursions into something magical. Most importantly for us, she inspired our daughters. They became completely absorbed in the wildlife around them — spotting birds, mammals, reptiles and insects, and learning about the extraordinary ecosystem they were experiencing. Cindy never made it feel like a lesson; her passion was infectious, and watching our children become so engaged with nature was one of the highlights of the entire trip. She is an enormous asset to Playa Cativo. Mike was equally wonderful. He looked after us brilliantly throughout our stay and has that rare ability to make every member of a family feel special. Nothing was ever too much trouble; he anticipated what we needed, remembered the little things and repeatedly went the extra mile. He was warm, funny and completely genuine. The entire serving team deserves recognition too — there is a warmth and friendliness to the service here that feels authentic rather than rehearsed. The food was outstanding. The head chef and his team are producing remarkably accomplished food given the lodge’s remote location. Beautiful fresh ingredients, wonderful fish, fruit and produce, imaginative dishes and consistently excellent cooking. Eating this well every day while surrounded by rainforest and looking across the Golfo Dulce is quite an experience. Alessandro at front of house was superb — attentive, charming and always there when something needed organising or resolving. Kenneth, the General Manager, clearly cares deeply about the guest experience and about the property itself. It was also a pleasure getting to know Mark, the owner, and hearing more about the vision, commitment and enormous amount of work that has gone into creating and preserving this remarkable place. And then there is Cativo itself. You wake to the sounds of the rainforest. Toucans fly overhead. Agoutis wander through the grounds. Coatis appear seemingly wherever they please — including, occasionally, where they probably shouldn’t! The forest is alive with butterflies, monkeys, reptiles and extraordinary birdlife, while dolphins, turtles and humpback whales inhabit the waters beyond it. It doesn’t feel as though a hotel has been imposed upon the environment; it feels as though you have temporarily been allowed to live within it. Playa Cativo isn’t simply a luxury hotel in Costa Rica. It is an experience, and a genuinely memorable one. Thank you to Cindy, Mike, Alessandro, Kenneth, Mark, the wonderful restaurant team, the chefs and everyone behind the scenes who made our stay so special. We leave with some extraordinary memories — and two daughters who now see the natural world a little differently.

Paradise - Don’t miss it!

This place is paradise and worth every penny you spend here. From the moment you arrive by boat you are treated so special by everyone. The grounds and lodges are cared for with impeccable attention to detail. The food is beyond expectations…you will never tire photographing your meals! But the staff are the heartbeat of this place and you can tell that from the owner to the groundskeeper, the culture is to truly care for each other and their guests. Mike, Alonso, Allesandro, Kyra, and so many others who I don’t even know their names are special people. My husband has Crohn’s disease and they took great care with every single meal and he remarked that he has been feeling so well here. What a blessing. We will never forget this trip. Costa Rica is incredible and this piece of CR might be one of the most beautiful places here. Pure Vida!

Stunning accommodations and incredibly attentive staff! Playa Cativo made exploring effortless! If you are so lucky to meet Mike, you will be in great hands! He was born for hospitality and made every meal an experience! Our guided hikes were led by Cindy. Her knowledge and personality made every adventure meaningful and exciting! The grounds are a beautiful mix of luxury meets nature. We traveled as a group of friends but as a mom of two little ones, I would highly recommend this place for easy traveling with little ones!

A Peaceful Escape into Nature

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Playa Cativo is a truly special place. What I loved most was its secluded location in the heart of the rainforest, accessible only by boat. It offers something increasingly difficult to find: genuine peace and quiet, surrounded by untouched nature. The atmosphere is wonderfully calm, and the guests come here to relax, so everyone respects the tranquillity of the place. The staff were exceptionally kind, attentive and professional throughout my stay. Everything was beautifully organised, yet the service always felt warm and personal. The food deserves a special mention—it was absolutely outstanding and honestly beyond five-star quality. Every meal was a pleasure. From the location and natural surroundings to the service, atmosphere and exceptional cuisine, everything was wonderful. Playa Cativo is the perfect place to disconnect, slow down and experience Costa Rica’s incredible nature in complete peace. I would happily return and wholeheartedly recommend it.
