Changes to hotel not for the better

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

A disappointing return visit. It was only last year I was bowled over with the hotel. So decided to return again with a cousin after gushing about it. First off the check in was very bland and not as welcoming. They seem to have a lot of new staff who are not as enthusiastic and friendly. Then the much anticipated spa has changed so you have to pay €24 for one hour’s use. Now considering other hotels offer spa for free and that it was free to use previously it was a complete shock especially as it was not mentioned in their website. Another annoying change was the fa t that you now have to book in advance for the free shuttle bus to the marina. Before you simply turned up. I would recommend booking early in the morning because we tried to book several hours before leaving to be told it was full. The alternative we were told was to book a taxi through the hotel. We did €18. Compare this to free shuttle. If you have to do this going and coming back it starts adding up. But be advised that you can book an Uber for €7 instead which we found out on our return because the return shuttle was full. Considering there is only one bus and three time slots it’s no wonder the bus gets booked up quickly. Why the hotel doesn’t create more time slots or more shuttles is beyond me. All these things plus the general malaise of the staff really didn’t provide a great experience this time round and I’ll not return to this hotel or recommend it again.

4 star at best! If you are looking for a 5 star hotel do not stay here!

We stayed for 7 nights at the Anantara Vilamoura in a Deluxe Room in the adults only section. Before travelling my husband contacted Anantara to try to arrange a birthday cake. He was told the messages would be forwarded to the hotel and that they would reply. A week later after no reply he contacted the hotel again, directly, and still received no reply. As you can imagine this is not a great start to what should be a five start resort. On arrival at the hotel at around 15.15 our room was not ready (check in is at 15.00) and it was not until just before 16.00 that our room was available. First impressions of the room was that it was modern and clean but once we started using the room we discovered an array of issues. The room was in need of work; threadbare wall textures in places, scuffs and marks on walls, in built wardrobe door very hard to open and close as it rubs on the floor, toilet roll holder wonky and hanging off the wall and a towel rail coming off the wall. We also had issues with the drainage in the sink and bath. It was terrible, we did complain and it was rectified but for a 5 star hotel I feel the cleaning team should have reported and got rectified. As a five star hotel you receive nightly turn down service. We stayed for 7 nights and only received the service 3 times. As the weather wasn’t so good we paid to use the indoor pool, for one hour it’s €25pp but the swimming pool is cold! When using an indoor spa hotel my expectation is for a warm pool. There is a phone in the room but no directory with the numbers of who you need to call. Upon check in we were told to dial 9 for reception and on two occasions we tried to call them. Once to log a complaint about the room not being serviced and the other occasion was to book the spa facilities. It took about 30 rings until the team answered and the other time I ended up having to walk down to reception. For a 5 star hotel this is not acceptable, one or two rings and someone should answer! Another issue for us was the self parking being closed throughout our stay with no warning. Valet parking (without the valet) is an option but one of the reasons we chose this hotel over others was the underground self parking. It means that someone else, not covered by my car rental insurance, is taking the car and keys to park it elsewhere, adding additional risk. There were some good points however. The breakfast had plenty of well stocked fresh choices and the beds were comfortable. This hotel is far from a true 5 star rating. We have stayed at Anantara Resorts in the past and this complex as it currently stands does not fit within this portfolio. So many points are simple to fix and as a 5 star hotel they should be rectified as part of regular checks and standard maintenance. Would I recommend or stay at this resort again? No; as when paying for 5 start I expect 5 star quality and service. To add a final side note, the Dom Pedro golf course which the resort overlooks is currently being refurbished and yes you will find plant machinery in operation everyday. We requested a high floor room (only 2 floors) and facing away from the golf course. We were lucky that they accommodated our request and it was quiet Garden View room.

A little below the Anantara’s standards

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We have been to Anantara Vilamoura for our golf holiday. We choose anantara as we have been to other hotels same name around the world and we appreciate so much the standards. Here in Alagarve is a bit below on what you expect from an Anantara experience. The hotel is a bit old and quite bare, everything but cozy. The rooms same, old but clean. The staff is nice but for instance we had 4 nights on 6 the room prepare for the night, the other 2 no preparation. No slippers in the room you have to ask for it, no body lotion and no vanity kit. I know all this are not essentials but they are some tricks that make you feel in a 5 star hotel. Another things is that the beautiful Victoria course in front of the pool is being digging up at the moment, so the view is not nice. But suppose this is momentary. Food is good. The pool is nice, even the pool staff is super nice. We ask to organize shuttle to golf courses and we have been supported every time. The average judge is good and recommended but lower your expectations

Bittersweet Experience..

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We booked 4 rooms in the hotel to spend some days with my family. Despite arriving the first of our group, my mother-in-law, my wife and myself were the last to get our rooms attributed. It was even after the "official" check-in time of 15.00. It would have been nice to at least be offered a soft drink while we waited in the lobby. Arriving in our room, I notice that the safe is not working, so I call and inform the reception. After calling me back 3 times to make sure if I know how to use the safe, they finally send a technician over. The safe needed new batteries. My mother-in-law is finally given a different room number that does not correspond to the invoice during check-in. The next morning, we discovered that the bed in her room is broken and she did not sleep well. We inform the receptionist on the way for breakfast. On our return to the room, nothing has been done. We inquire and must insist to either change the bed or get a new room for my mother-in-law. She is finally given another room (the 3rd room number in less than 24 hours). During our stay, the access to the underground parking closed and we needed to park a bit further. The valet kindly offered his help, which I declined as it is a service I don't want to use in any hotel. This was also the occasion to celebrate our weddIng anniversary and a little attention was left in our room upon our arrival. On the 3rd day, some pastries were also left in my mother-in-law's room. We are very grateful for this, but all the rest left a bittersweet experience.

Nice hotel. Airy. Good staff.

Lovely hotel very grand. Rooms were nice and big. Although the spa was closed and we were not informed until we checked in which was poor. But the breakfast was lovely. Bar was nice. Staff were great. Big open airy spaces. There is a course being built at the rear of the hotel but this was just being shaped when we were there.
