Reviews for Hulbert House

One of our favorite places we have stayed anywhere in the world

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

My wife and I debated the Hulbert House because there weren’t a lot of reviews, but we are so glad we booked anyway. We loved everything about this place. The location was great (views from the room are amazing), the breakfasts were excellent, and most of all the staff was unbelievable. The management at the hotel does a great job of giving guests opportunities to feel like they are at home. Nightly happy hours with exceptional regional wines (not sure I’ve ever had a great wine at a hotel happy hour) and canapés around the fire gave us the opportunity to speak to other guests and get ideas about things to do and things to avoid. The location is just up a very steep but pretty short hill from town, which is extremely convenient while providing separation from the crowds in town center, but the staff was also willing to provide transportation to town. One last note: the photos on the website did not do the rooms justice. Our room and bathroom were extremely roomy, clean, quiet, and comfortable. We also got a tour of a few other rooms, and they were similarly large, although each room has its own uniqueness to it. Overall, we will definitely stay here again if we make it back to Queenstown.

Beautifully Restored Boutique Hotel with Exceptional Service

Hulbert House truly feels like a home away from home. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Marina, the manager, who personally took care of us—even insisting on carrying our suitcases to our room. Our room was beautifully appointed, with furnishings that thoughtfully preserve the character of this historic home dating back to the 1800s gold rush era. Marina also introduced us to the inviting breakfast area, where guests can relax and help themselves to drinks at any time. Amber and Luisa were equally wonderful, always available to assist with anything we needed—from breakfast to evening drinks on the beautiful porch. Sitting there, overlooking Lake Wakatipu, The Remarkables, and Skyline Hill, was simply breathtaking. The hotel is perched on a hill just a short walk from the center of Queenstown. The return walk is steep, with a climb up a hill and stairs—but we actually came to enjoy it. It felt like a small daily challenge and added to the charm of the stay. On our first evening, Marina kindly offered to drive us into town for dinner, helping us get our bearings—an especially thoughtful touch. I can’t imagine a lovelier place to stay in Queenstown.

Best place to stay in Queenstown!

Great location with just a little bit of a climb to get to town. We were treated like royalty by all the staff, enjoyed happy hour on the outside patio with courtesy wine and snacks, and had a beautifully decorated, spacious room. We enjoyed watching the parasailers from the front porch! This was the favorite place we stayed in all of New Zealand! Highly recommended.

Luxury facilities and luxury service at a superb small boutique hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 7 months ago

Bijou boutique hotel - a throwback in design to colonial times but nothing was old fashioned about the way we were looked after by Marina, Laura, Alexis, and Alessia and their team When we arrived in Queenstown early we were met by Marina who sat us down with a glass of bubbles while our heavy suitcases were taken to our room upstairs by the girls helping that day Marina explained about how the hotel worked and how we could help ourselves to any cookies and cakes being made for guests in the open kitchen alongside the lounge parlour and so we not surprised by the welcome letter and gift greeting us in our room with a view over Queenstown harbour to die for We only saw Marina that first day but her colleagues Laura, and Alessia (both from England) and Alexis continued the friendly personal support whether it was recommending and booking restaurants for us, offering to take us into town or to collect us from anywhere if we were too tired to get back under our own steam - and of course for Nadine, leaving one of their bikes out on their verandah for her use at 6am before breakfast So when our flights back to Auckland were cancelled due to the airbus software debacle we were only too pleased that our room was still available for us to use The breakfast , the rooms, the overall facilities and the service from all the amazing team was superb and I highly recommend this small hotel to anyone who feels they deserve to be spoilt when visiting Queenstown

Exceptional service, highlight of New Zealand trip

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 9 months ago

We were lucky enough to spend three nights at Hulbert House for our 10th wedding anniversary, and it was the highlight of our whole NZ trip. The photos of this place don’t do it justice - it is so beautifully decorated, with every little touch thoughtfully designed. We stayed in the Firth suite - so spacious and with such a lovely view. The huge bathroom was a dream! But the thing that makes this place exceptional is the staff - they really treat you as if welcoming you to their home. Drinks, canapés, the most amazing breakfasts… and they made a real effort to help us celebrate our anniversary. I am almost hesitant to submit this review as I don’t want more of the world to know about this absolute treasure in Queenstown. We cannot wait to return to Hulbert House many times in the future.
