Matakauri has the quality trademarks we have come to expect from the Robertson Lodges. Difficult to compare with Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers - and probably not necessary as they are all superb. We had a deluxe suite which had fabulous views across Lake Wakatipu. The sitting and raised bedroom areas are well designed (although perhaps not quite as splendid as the rooms in Saffire Freycinet in Tasmania). The bathroom was very well appointed, although the sound proofing between us and the neighbouring bathroom was not perfect. The dining room has the same great views as our room. The food and service were both excellent. All in all, this is a very good hotel.

First stop of our Honey Moon was the Matakauri Lodge and it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. The property overlooks lake and mountains so whether you are having breakfast/dinner, at the gym or in your lodge the views are breathtaking. The chef is fantastic, every single meal we had was delicious. The cherry on top was the truffled scrambled eggs we had the day of our departure, honestly best truffled eggs ever. Also the desserts are really something else, even the ice cream is special (earl grey & Manuka honey are amazing). The staff is friendly and helpful with lots of great tips on what to do around. Could not have made a better choice. This place is out of this world.

This was our first stay at a NZ lodge and we had high expectations. The area is well known to us, although we had not visited for some time. We chose to relax for the 3 days, having seen most of the scenic locations previously. We were warmly greeted by Joanne on arrival and given refreshments as our suite was not quite ready. As we were celebrating a significant birthday, a bottle of Cloudy Bay sparkling was thoughtfully on ice when we arrived in our suite. Accommodation is beautifully appointed and complimentary beer & soft drinks provided. The bath looked out over the lake and the views overall were tranquil and stunning. Very comfortable accommodation although we were woken early two mornings with guests above exercising in their suite. Servicing of the room was very discreet and you never saw housekeeping or arrived back to an unmade up room. Breakfast was very good, with a choice of fruit and cereals followed by something cooked. Lunch is also available and we found the menu ideal for something light. Dinner is a 5 course degustation changing daily, although you can pick fewer courses if you prefer. Food was good and the dining location had fantastic views. Service from Laurence and Brigitte was excellent and our love of NZ whitebait was noted and generously provided one evening. Whilst a pre-dinner drink and canapes are complimentary, the sparkling served was from Marlborough. It would be good if a small selection of the excellent local Otago wines and sparkling could be showcased and included in the overall tariff. Currently all wine with dinner is an additional cost. Hiring a car for your stay is a good idea as it would allow you to visit other attractions in the area. This is a lovely property, particularly for international guests to enjoy the beautiful surroundings Queenstown offers.

Matakauri is a 5 star lodge located 7-8km from downtown Queenstown. It is right by the shore of Lake Wakatipu. And you get a good view of good the lake AND surrounding mountains including the iconic Remarkables. The setting is like you are in a beautiful landscaped garden with swimming pool, spa, fireplace, organic vegetable 'farm" all within the premise. It has all the modern amenities of a 5 star hotel but beats it with a cosy and homely touch. The decor are modern classic - pleasing to the eyes and senses. The furniture and fitting fulfilled both aesthetic AND practical functions -something that is mutually exclusive in some other high end premise!. We love our lodge. It felt like coming home to our own luxurious and comfortable cottage in the woods. Sleep qualiy was excellent. The food is excellent. We make breakfast, lunch and dinners and every meal was a good one. The only feature I did not quite like was the rates included dinners. Which means you are 'encouraged' to dine in every night. Even though our preference is to try some local restaurants in downtown Queenstown (and there are some rather good ones too). I guess it is the measure of the pride and confidence the hotel has in its own in house dining. Btw the menu changes every night. So you won't have a repeat during your 2-4 nights stay. That said, for me personally, it would be nice to just have a simple meal occasionally as opposed to a 6-7 course degustation every night. That said, I reiterated, food is good. And service is excellent. Right from the bell, reception, dining and house keeping. We were very well pampered. I am nitpicking here - but I only wish for my room to have a power point next to my bedside - many of us are cellphone addicts right from the 'get go' till 'turn in' time. So if budget is not an issue. And you have your own ride. This is the place I would highly recommend.
