Reviews for The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe

Breathtaking property, underwhelming food, sloppy service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

Our stay at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe was a frustrating example of a hotel getting the hard parts right while repeatedly falling short on the easy ones. My partner and I stayed for three nights alongside my parents, with the four of us occupying two Fireplace Bungalow Rooms. From a physical standpoint, the property is exceptional. The grounds are beautiful, the rooms are full of character, and the setting is every bit as idyllic as we’d hoped. At several points, we commented that this had the potential to become one of our favorite hotels in California - if not the US. Unfortunately, almost every service interaction left us disappointed. None of the issues were major on their own, but together they created the impression that staff were doing the minimum rather than going above and beyond. By checkout, what should have been a relaxing luxury getaway had become a surprisingly frustrating experience. -- Pre-Arrival Before our stay, the hotel sent a pre-arrival questionnaire intended to personalize the experience. One question asked whether we’d like the concierge to contact us with recommendations. We eagerly answered yes, however nobody ever reached out - either before or during our stay. I also contacted the hotel in advance regarding my father, who is vegan. The breakfast menu appeared to offer only one suitable entrée, so I asked whether the kitchen could prepare a few alternatives during our stay. The reply didn’t address the question, simply repeating what was already on the menu and saying my comments would be passed along. Nothing further was mentioned once we arrived or during our stay. What made this more surprising was that the poolside menu - served just a few yards away - included a vegan açaí bowl that would have worked perfectly for breakfast. Nobody suggested it at any point, which was particularly disappointing for a hotel of this caliber. Luxury hospitality is about anticipating needs rather than reacting to them. This felt like a missed opportunity to go above and beyond. -- Check-In We booked through American Express Platinum (The Hotel Collection), which includes benefits such as guaranteed (subject to availability) early check-in, upgrades, breakfast credit, resort credit, and late checkout. Early check-in was accommodated, and the front desk clearly walked us through the Amex benefits. However, a room upgrade was not proactively offered, which felt like a missed opportunity to acknowledge one of the main reasons guests book through the program. The advertised “welcome drink” was also underwhelming. Rather than a glass of sparkling wine or a cocktail, guests help themselves to watermelon-infused water from a communal dispenser. One feature we did love was the text messaging service. We were given a number at check-in and could text the hotel for anything we needed. On the several occasions we used this, we received a quick response within minutes. We were also given a map and brief orientation, though it felt rushed. We weren’t told about the complimentary car service, weekly activities, that the pool stays open until 10:00 PM etc - things we only discovered later, and by that time our stay was almost over. -- Grounds & Facilities The grounds are breathtaking. Both the property and the surrounding village are beautifully maintained, creating a peaceful atmosphere from the moment you arrive. The gardens were immaculate and filled with hummingbirds and butterflies, making it genuinely enjoyable to wander around. The hotel offers a full-size heated pool, whirlpool, fitness center, and spa. The pool became one of our favorite places to relax, especially with the floating loungers. The only nitpick was the temperature. Despite being advertised as heated, the pool felt much colder than expected (we heard other guests commenting how “freezing” it was too). The whirlpool, on the other hand, was extremely hot, bordering on uncomfortable after a few minutes. Ideally, the pool could be slightly warmer and the whirlpool slightly cooler - but, again, these are nice-to-haves and overall we loved our time at the pool. -- Room We stayed in a Fireplace Bungalow Room. The room was slightly smaller than expected. For instance, the front door couldn’t fully open without hitting the sofa - though it more than made up for it with charm and thoughtful design. It blended historic character with modern comforts, and the finishes were high quality throughout. We had specifically requested rooms with clawfoot bathtubs, and both were assigned accordingly, which we appreciated. The Toto toilet, complete with a full bidet, was a great addition to the rooms. However, it provided one amusing quirk in ours. Positioned beside the sink, its sensor activated whenever somebody walked nearby, meaning it opened and rinsed itself every time we washed our hands or brushed our teeth. Not a major issue, but after the tenth time it became somewhat irritating. The bed was excellent, with a supportive mattress and very comfortable feather pillows. We also appreciated having a dedicated self-parking space just steps from the room - though read on as this unfortunately sours during our check-out process. -- Housekeeping Housekeeping was excellent overall. The room was consistently spotless and well stocked, and evening turndown service included fresh Evian bottles and chocolate truffles. The only issue came on our first morning when we were woken at 8:30 AM by housekeeping knocking and attempting to enter to clean our room. For a leisure stay, this felt unusually early. After that, we made sure to put the Do Not Disturb sign out overnight (something I hadn’t even considered we would need to do on our first night!). The following day, housekeeping knocked on my parents’ room at 08:30 - alas, they had not put out their sign. They agreed that this is an unreadable time to knock - when guests staying for a leisurely break are likely either asleep, waking, or getting ready to head to breakfast. -- Food & Drink I’ve written a separate review of Lilian’s, which I encourage you to read on their dedicated reviews, but it was one of the weaker aspects of our stay. Both dinner and breakfast were underwhelming given the pricing and reputation. Service was friendly but inconsistent, and several dishes didn’t meet expectations. The coffee was particularly disappointing. It appeared to come from an automated bean-to-cup machine. It’s fine, and would easily be passable at a Best Western, but not at a prestigious luxury resort. By our second day, we chose to dine elsewhere for dinner despite staying on property. -- Check-Out Checkout was the most disappointing part of the stay. Although our Amex booking included guaranteed late checkout, it wasn’t proactively offered. We sent a text message enquiring about it, and were granted 12:00 PM instead of the standard 11:00 AM. When we arrived at the front desk to check out, we were handed our folio and offered bottled waters to take with us (which was appreciated) - however, at no point did either of the two associates on the front desk ask how our stay was, which was particularly disappointing. We noticed a $65 per day charge - $195 total - for self-parking. This was surprising, as we’d been told at check-in that our room “included parking”, and there was no mention of an additional fee, which understandably led us to believe it was complimentary. It turns out that the hotel charges for parking across the entire property, including self-parking. While the charge was removed after we questioned it, charging for self-parking spaces that come with the room feels like nickel-and-diming. We also discovered an issue with our Amex dining credits. Because we were traveling together, we naturally dined together and charged meals to one room, without giving any thought to how credits might be applied behind the scenes. As a result, only one room’s breakfast credit and resort credit had been applied, while the second room’s credits had effectively gone unused. When we raised this at the front desk, the initial response was that the credits couldn’t simply be reapplied because everything had been charged to a single room. This was presented as though it were a limitation of the system, implying that we should have split charges between rooms throughout the stay in order to receive the full benefit - something that had never been explained to us and isn’t a reasonable expectation when traveling as a group. After speaking with a manager, it became clear that the credits could in fact be adjusted without issue. The charges were reallocated and both rooms’ benefits were ultimately applied correctly. What made this frustrating was not the outcome, but the process. This is exactly the kind of backend detail guests shouldn’t need to think about during a relaxing stay. Given that we had two rooms under the same reservation and were consistently dining together, it felt like something that could have been identified and handled proactively before checkout, rather than requiring a discussion/argument at the front desk. Once corrected, checkout ended abruptly. They didn’t care to ask what we had planned for the rest of the day, wish us safe travels, or maybe a “hope to see you again soon!” - just simply a “there you go”. -- The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe left us with mixed feelings. The property itself is exceptional - beautiful grounds, charming rooms, and an idyllic setting, and with stronger service this could easily be one of the best hotels we’ve stayed at. Instead, most of our frustrations came down to any aspect involving a human element rather than the property, with missed pre-arrival follow-ups, a lack of personalization, underwhelming dining, inconsistent communication, and a frustrating checkout all contributing to the experience. It ultimately feels like a missed opportunity, as the hotel has everything it needs to deliver an outstanding stay, but without a more proactive and polished approach to service, it falls short. We’d consider returning for the setting and accommodations, but only in the hope that the service improves to match the quality of the property.

Great stay but a few bumps

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

Overall we had a good stay but there were a few things that detracted from the experience. First, there was construction going on right outside of room starting at 8am and continuing throughout the day with the noise following us poolside. It was the kind involving loud jack hammers. It would be great if information like this was shared on the website before you book because I wouldn’t have booked if I knew. I’ve had this happen at other hotels so it was even more annoying it was happening again. Second, it was confusing if the water in the room was free or not. It’s listed on the menu as $9 but was put out on our bedside as if it’s complimentary. We didn’t end up getting charged but we were worried how much we had drank before we saw it might not be free. I booked a massage and a facial for both me and my husband but while I was on the phone the receptionist had to put me on hold to check out a guest. When she came back it seemed like she had to start over and ended up booking a massage for me and facial for my husband instead of two each. When I started receiving emails about the appointment I started to get a hunch something was wrong so I stopped by the desk to ask and confirmed only one treatment per person was booked. They were able to get us in for both in the end but annoying nonetheless. I booked this place because I wanted to partake in the yoga and wellness activities but was disappointed to find they didn’t occur during the week and only on the weekends. The schedule wasn’t available at the time we booked so we found out after the fact. Lastly, parking was outrageously expensive. $65 a night? If we knew street parking was close by and an option we would have done that but no one shared that with us and we didn’t know to ask. Food was great, pool was great, and overall property was impeccably maintained. Rooms were comfortable and very clean.

Everyone should stay here once

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

As a historical site this property is a true gem. From a hotel perspective they have managed to combine history with cutting edge amenities including amazing beds, sheets, bathrooms, flooring, furniture, and a silent hvac system. Upon arrival you will be greeted by an amazing staff who will help you with your luggage, and vehicle (I regret to say I did not get the Supervisor's name who escorted us to the front desk- he was extremely helpful and enhanced our stay.). You will be greeted by someone like Daniel who took us on a tour of the grounds and location of the room and Ethan - who parked the vehicle next to our room and brought in the luggage. The property is located across the street from the town square (make sure you go right across the street to Thyme in The Ranch Bakery). If you are doing business in the area - this is a necessary location to help (close the deal) so to speak. Anyone that knows anyone - knows this property. By Hilton standards this is not a “value priced” property”- it is expensive. However it is worth saving up your money for that special occasion (if you are paying) - if your company is paying - take advantage (it is the right place to take your client for a drink). The only set back related to this property are rooms with doors between rooms. The property went to amazing lengths with flooring, furnishings, amenities (robes, slippers, bath goods, towels, sheets, comforters, throw blankets etc), but they kept the original doors which allow you to hear every single word your neighbor says. Foam stripping around the door (sides, and top) and thick weather stripping at the bottom of the door should reduce decibels at least 50% and is not expensive and will not restrict opening or closing of the door. All and all a 5 star stay.

Lovely Setting, But Not Worth the Premium Price

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

Beautiful grounds and a pleasant overall atmosphere, but the guest rooms feel dated and do not match the premium price point. For a short stay, it is fine, but I would not choose this property again expecting a true luxury resort experience. Our room ran out of hot water one evening. After calling engineering, we were told that the water tank serving our set of rooms has a limited supply, so if multiple guests are showering at the same time, there may not be enough hot water. That was disappointing given the cost of the stay. The pool experience was also not what we expected. This is not an adults-only or particularly relaxing pool environment. There were loud children, a bachelorette group on one side of us, and a one-year-old birthday party on the other. We ultimately left because it was too crowded and not relaxing. The pool also felt too small to comfortably accommodate the number of guests. For a resort charging around $3,000 for a three-night stay, I would expect a more elevated and thoughtfully managed pool experience, ideally with separate areas for guests who want a lively atmosphere and those who want a quiet, relaxing one. The spa itself was fine, but my massage was disappointing. The therapist discussed the death of her dog during the treatment, which felt uncomfortable and not appropriate for a relaxing spa experience. Her nails also hurt during the massage and should have been trimmed. She seemed to lose track of time and asked me when the massage had started. She also asked whether I wanted a scalp and face massage, and I said yes, but she ran out of time. The massage consisted of the same motion repeated on my back for the full hour, and I was never asked to turn over. Overall, the property has charm, but the room condition, hot water issue, pool environment, and spa experience did not justify the luxury pricing.

Possibly the worst hotel experience I have ever had

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

If you are looking for hot showers, clean patio loungers, a functioning restaurant and top notch service and execution then the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe is not for you. Overpriced, slow service, lack of customer focus by staff and just a poorly run hotel. Would not recommend to anyone looking for a $1000 a night experience at less than $100 value. If you stay there and then have bad luck our friend coined that the RSF Effect. Simply awful. Stay there at your own risk.
