Belmond Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

To preside lavishly over one of the world’s most well known beaches, book a penthouse suite at the five-star Belmond Copacabana Palace. Here you’ll have a bird's eye view over the coast, where two million people flock to watch the fireworks each New Year's Eve. Named a cultural patrimony of Rio, the 90-year-old landmark once hosted Marilyn Monroe, The Rolling Stones and Diana, Princess of Wales. It retains a French-inspired feel after a 2012 restoration, and the social scene at the expansive pool is as hot as the Rio sun.

See and be seen on Copacabana’s wide swatch of sand. Give up your white-umbrella-clad throne and return for lunch, a feijoada stew – Brazil's national dish – at the poolside bar. Indulge in a spa treatment that uses white clay from the Amazon. Snag a sake cocktail at celeb chef Ken Hom’s MEE restaurant. Sway to bossa nova with a hot local at the piano bar.

Arrived to this wonderful grand dame of a hotel once again, we were here last year, this time staying for 9 nights. They upgraded us to a lovely room overlooking the beach in the old building. I had a few requests which I had emailed the hotel prior to our arrival (emptying the mini bar and extra hangers) - and everything was done. Breakfast was delicious as always, with a wonderful selection of tropical fruits. Never had a problem getting a sun lounger round the pool, though you only get the sun till about 2pm after which you need to move to their section on the beach, where they provide you with ice cold bottles of water. This is the only hotel that has a large pool at ground level in Rio - the water always a lovely refreshing warm temperature. The rooms are refreshed twice a day or at a moments notice should you require any other time, with bottles of water left at night. A pair of Havianas are provided for you to take away. I really cannot fault this hotel, the staff are all wonderful. It really is the only hotel to stay at in Rio, if you can stretch to stay here you really should - you will not be disappointed.

This iconic hotel is worth the high price, if you choose the right room - we didn't try every single one, but you get a pretty good idea on site. Service is good, although plagued by the South American Speedy Gonzales restaurant style, you've got to hold on to your plate - at first it makes you laugh, but it is quite annoying in the end. Tiny detail for some, but a point to improve for us. Choose the main building, ocean view room. The view from floor to ceiling windows is fabulous. Pool side can be noisy, we had a bunch (like almost 100) lively Canadians touring there at the same time, love Canada, but I wouldn't have enjoyed a pool side room when they were having their pool party. Also, I don't think the wing building is worth it, for the same reason, the pool. Without the view, the stars would not add up for the cost. They arrange a free taxi to the mall in Ipanema, ask for it. All in all standard luxury. The Mee restaurant is reviewed separately.

Takes you back to colonial times! Luxury, tastefully decorated, delicate features, great food. A place to indulge and spoil yourself. Great location at Copacabana beach ( nice beach bar across the road as well) Nit the best part of town for shopping but the views on the front bedrooms are to die for

We stayed for four nights and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. All the usual compliments due to a 5 star hotel are deserved. Superb staff especially, from the door team to the waiting team, concierge.... Perfect level of service. On hand instaneously but no over bearing obsequiousness. Top marks. Only quibble is having to pay for coffee making in the room. Nespresso capsules at R$8 each. Before leaving the room for two cups by two people R$39 (the extra I guess is tax) is a bit of a pain and an unnecessary annoyance in the context of a hefty but worth it bill in a great city and location. I have no recollection of ever having to have paid for bedroom coffee in any hotel before. Currently in another Belmond in Brazil and again top marks for everything but...this time no coffee making facilities of any sort. Room service? First thing in the morning no thanks.
