Belmond Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

To preside lavishly over one of the world’s most well known beaches, book a penthouse suite at the five-star Belmond Copacabana Palace. Here you’ll have a bird's eye view over the coast, where two million people flock to watch the fireworks each New Year's Eve. Named a cultural patrimony of Rio, the 90-year-old landmark once hosted Marilyn Monroe, The Rolling Stones and Diana, Princess of Wales. It retains a French-inspired feel after a 2012 restoration, and the social scene at the expansive pool is as hot as the Rio sun.

See and be seen on Copacabana’s wide swatch of sand. Give up your white-umbrella-clad throne and return for lunch, a feijoada stew – Brazil's national dish – at the poolside bar. Indulge in a spa treatment that uses white clay from the Amazon. Snag a sake cocktail at celeb chef Ken Hom’s MEE restaurant. Sway to bossa nova with a hot local at the piano bar.

Stayed in the Belmond Copacabana Palace in May 2017. This is a real charming place with old style service. So handy to the beach and shopping if that's what you want. Breakfast each morning...poolside. And if you don't want to go to the beach, well just slip into the pool. Couldn't believe just how friendly and helpful the staff were. Any request was quickly dealt with . The room we had was spacious and very clean. If we ever return to Rio..we would stay here again.

This hotel, completely different from the newer luxury hotels in town has its own personal and irresistible charm. The staff is more than competent, without losing their smile. They make the guests feel special at every moment. Staying at the Copa Palace is a unique experience. The apartments are really roomy, the beds are wonderful, the bathroom equipment and amenities are excellent. And the pool, unbelievably beautiful and large, is also one of the most positive point of this traditional property.

We have been at Belmond Copacabana Palace and was a nice experience. The place likes a big boat, you feel in a cruise. The common areas are wonderful, big attention to the swimming pool area, very rich in details, nice atmosphere. Rooms are nice size, but a bit old fashioned, but it's the spirit of the place. My only complain is about service; not as good as before. I felt some of them a bit esnobe sometimes, not really interested to help, concierge did not give so many tips, I wished more from them. Also, the breakfast a bit poor, But it's a nice and glorious stay, just needs to improve service to be perfect.

My partner and I stayed here last august. What a gorgeous hotel. We checked in fairly late to a city view room so went straight to bed after a 12 hour flight from U.K. The room was lovely with very high ceilings. However we decided we would prefer a room with a sea view so we headed to reception to see if they had any available . They had a few upgrades a sea view room and penthouse suite. We upgraded to sea view , again beautiful room ,light and airy with high ceiling in traditional but new style ( which we like ). The pool at this hotel was lovely. However you did have to chase the sun around the pool as limited sun due to high rises both sides. My partner decided he wanted to have a look at the penthouse that they suggested as upgrade the day before so we both went up to view one of the suites , I wasn't too keen on having a look at first as felt our seaview room was lovely and couldn't really justify spending extra on penthouse , but I went along and WOW. ...The accommodation was new and massive with lounge and dining area , bar area huge bedroom and bathroom with sea view from bath over copacabana beach. The next big surprise and what sold it to us was the black pool on the penthouse floor ,a black tiled pool on top of building. It really did impress! My partner enquiried about cost for upgrade and we were moved up to penthouses ( if your funds allow it ,was definitely worth it for us) with penthouse you have access to a butler service ours was Caesar , he was great. We had the black pool to ourselves all holiday it was beautiful ,no issues with catching the sun. There was complementary water left out every day in ice buckets and a phone to contact Caesar. Lunch was set up every day on dining table with linen poolside ... just amazing! Breakfast was served in restaurant on ground floor next to pool and that was great too .choice eggs to order lovely bacon fresh fruits bread and pastries. I like my pg tips and brown sauce so I was armed with this every morning. We didn't venture out too much as the hotel and our suite and pool was so beautiful but we had a really long walk on beach and visited the hotel Fasano for lunch the fish was under cooked so they replaced with a lamb dish which was nice but I felt the food was better at copacobana palace as was the hotel. There was also a nice Brazilian restaurant round the corner from our hotel serving all you can eat meat at the table ,fillet, rib eye and sirloin steaks .... gorgeous! We had the Sunday brunch which was delicious grilled prawns chicken steak lovely salads and sides lots of desserts and sparkling wine. We were rushing before a trip to watch a football match at World Cup stadium , but I'd recommend allowing a couple of hours to eat. We also visited a restaurant that was recommended by reception. It was the one that tom cruise visited when he stayed, I can't remember the name but it's like a massive tree house with spectacular views and the food was excellent too. We walked around town a few times too and never felt threatened I found it all quite safe to be honest, but probably wise to not wear valuables like anywhere really. We ate at mee the Michelin star asian restaurant which was so nice we had dinner there twice. We also ate at the Italian that I wasn't as keen on ,but it could be what I chose. We did see Christ the redeemer whilst traveling in taxi one evening but unfortunately couldn't attend the trip as we kept putting it off and on last day it was too foggy and the don't recommend as you can't see anything so that was a shame. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and if I did visit rio again I would definitely choose copacabana place and highly recommend it !!!

It has the facilities one expects for a quiet stay at a convenient area. The service is as good as any 5-Star classic palace grade hotel. Design is pleasant. Housekeeping very well. Service is excellent.
