Belmond Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

To preside lavishly over one of the world’s most well known beaches, book a penthouse suite at the five-star Belmond Copacabana Palace. Here you’ll have a bird's eye view over the coast, where two million people flock to watch the fireworks each New Year's Eve. Named a cultural patrimony of Rio, the 90-year-old landmark once hosted Marilyn Monroe, The Rolling Stones and Diana, Princess of Wales. It retains a French-inspired feel after a 2012 restoration, and the social scene at the expansive pool is as hot as the Rio sun.

See and be seen on Copacabana’s wide swatch of sand. Give up your white-umbrella-clad throne and return for lunch, a feijoada stew – Brazil's national dish – at the poolside bar. Indulge in a spa treatment that uses white clay from the Amazon. Snag a sake cocktail at celeb chef Ken Hom’s MEE restaurant. Sway to bossa nova with a hot local at the piano bar.

I was astonished when checking out and had to pay R$130 or around $30 for the consumption of three Corona bier at the Pergola restaurant, which currently would be more properly named as fence restaurant, since you cannot see any pergola which is under reform... very deceiving... been robed in Copacabana is not a surprise, but in side the hotel...

I would usually opt for a deep tissue massage at every spa, but when I saw the Abhyanga Massage on the list, I couldn’t resist. Wow, did not disappoint. Having 4 hands on my body at the same time was more relaxing than I anticipated, and I was a zombie after an hour. The therapists led me to a relaxation room where I went into a very deep sleep for about 30 minutes. AMAZING!

This is a Rio de Janeiro’s icon. Therefore, our expectations were high. We are deceived because the hotel is undergoing an important reform and we weren’t informed (not at the time of the reservation, neither by email before our arrival). For instance: in the pool area the sea view is blocked, its famous sea view restaurant Pergula is closed. Our “full” ocean view room is also invaded with reforms views. Not to mention the noise both in our room and pool area (hammers, drills and workers). Might be a good option from 2019 and on, for the mean doesn’t worth what it costs...if you’re looking for an authentic 5* experience try Emiliano’s or Fasano instead. We will complete our stay in Rio in JW Marriot

We stayed here for 2 nights and enjoyed the location which is excellent for exploring Rio. One of the restaurants was closed for refurbishment which was a shame as this was the one we had wanted to eat in. We did find the main restaurant quite restrictive in its menu and the food very fancy so we opted not to eat there. The hotel has a really large pool and well equipped gym. The room we had overlooked Copacabana beach & was lovely, couldn't fault it at all. All in all a good stay but as you would expect it was not a cheap option!
