Belmond Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

To preside lavishly over one of the world’s most well known beaches, book a penthouse suite at the five-star Belmond Copacabana Palace. Here you’ll have a bird's eye view over the coast, where two million people flock to watch the fireworks each New Year's Eve. Named a cultural patrimony of Rio, the 90-year-old landmark once hosted Marilyn Monroe, The Rolling Stones and Diana, Princess of Wales. It retains a French-inspired feel after a 2012 restoration, and the social scene at the expansive pool is as hot as the Rio sun.

See and be seen on Copacabana’s wide swatch of sand. Give up your white-umbrella-clad throne and return for lunch, a feijoada stew – Brazil's national dish – at the poolside bar. Indulge in a spa treatment that uses white clay from the Amazon. Snag a sake cocktail at celeb chef Ken Hom’s MEE restaurant. Sway to bossa nova with a hot local at the piano bar.

I absolutely loved staying at this hotel. They arranged for a tour of the Sugar Loaf, Christ Statue and tour of the city. They were great with their service. Concierge was also able to change money for us. The hotel is absolutely beautiful! The room was very spacious. Pool area is delightful! When you get back from a long day of exploring, it is great to kick back and relax there. Across the street is the beach, and the boardwalk that takes you to the other beach areas- Leblon, etc. Absolutely great atmosphere. The hotel also has a restaurant- Cipriani- inside. Everything was A++

In the last twenty three days we have stayed or enjoyed five Belmond experiences but the hotel here is really not good. It is luxurious but you could be anywhere in the world. At Dos Cataracts in Iguazu they said we have put a kettle in your room and teabags because you are English. Here they gave us a kettle on request but could not provide decaffeinated sachets of coffee or teabags unless it took an hour. The teacups kept disappearing and took another hour to replace. Got so fed up. After so much excellent service the lack of communication skills with guests was glaring. Loved other Belmond experiences but here was so different. Not a great experience to end a wonderful holiday on.

The Belmond is located on Copacabana Beach within easy walking distance (100 m.) of surf and sand. The hotel also maintains a kiosk on the beach for the comfort of their guests where you can get beach chairs and towels - a very nice touch. The staff are very attentive and professional and went out of their way to meet our needs. There are three full service restaurants on the property that serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. One of them, the MEE, is a Michelin 5-star restaurant serving Pan-Asian food. The hotel was built in the 1920s and still retains all of its original charm even though it is in the heart to the bustling Copacabana tourist zone. I would highly recommend this property and would stay here again.

I spend 2 nights in this beautiful hotel. On arrival we were offered an upgrade to a sea view room which we took and I am so glad we did as it was an amazing room. Breakfast is served by the pool and offer loads of different Brazilian fruits. Room was very big with a super big bathroom towels are so nice. I missed the opportunity to have dinner at one of the 2 beautiful restaurants at the hotel as i was so tired on the last night there, but hopefully will try that on my next visit. I definitely recommend this hotel in Rio

We went with a large group and could not have been more happy!! Its luxury! All the concerns about safety were not an issue, though you will always be aware of surroundings. Everyonw we encountered were so nice and attentive. I went for a long walk along the beach alone before sunset and had no problem, only concern was should I accept a Capairiana(sp), it is Rio's version of margarita! The people are fun and just love life! To lay by the pool and be spoiled is simply amazing!
