Belmond Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

To preside lavishly over one of the world’s most well known beaches, book a penthouse suite at the five-star Belmond Copacabana Palace. Here you’ll have a bird's eye view over the coast, where two million people flock to watch the fireworks each New Year's Eve. Named a cultural patrimony of Rio, the 90-year-old landmark once hosted Marilyn Monroe, The Rolling Stones and Diana, Princess of Wales. It retains a French-inspired feel after a 2012 restoration, and the social scene at the expansive pool is as hot as the Rio sun.

See and be seen on Copacabana’s wide swatch of sand. Give up your white-umbrella-clad throne and return for lunch, a feijoada stew – Brazil's national dish – at the poolside bar. Indulge in a spa treatment that uses white clay from the Amazon. Snag a sake cocktail at celeb chef Ken Hom’s MEE restaurant. Sway to bossa nova with a hot local at the piano bar.

It's a lovely hotel but the noise and disruption from the pool and restaurant building work makes this a place to avoid for now. Shame we weren't alerted to this before arriving. Basically paying $400 a night and not able to relax by the pool because of noise. #feeingletdown

The location of this hotel is amazing right across the road from Copacabana beach. The room itself is lovely but staying for four nights I would have expected consideration of a much better positioned room. I'd suggest anyone staying requests a room on a high floor to get a chance of a reasonable view.

I recently stayed at the Copacabana Palace Hotel on my holiday in Brazil, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this hotel to anybody who plans to travel to Rio. The staff is very friendly and helpful (even if they only speak limited English), the rooms are very comfortable and tastefully decorated, and the poolside is very relaxing. The architecture of the hotel definitely has a Mediterranean feel to it. I arranged for the hotel to send a driver to pick me up from the airport, and he was waiting for me when I left baggage claim. The car was comfortable and had bottled water in the cup holders for me. The breakfast features many pastries, fruits, yogurts, eggs, bacon, and most importantly the Brazilian delicacy, pao de queijo (little cheese rolls). When you stay here, you feel like you're joining the list of bygone Hollywood stars who have graced the hotel over the past nine decades. I enjoyed walking through the hall above the lobby and looking at the pictures of all of the celebrities who have stayed here. The caipirinhas at the bar are excellent. I think that your holiday will be more memorable if you stay at this hotel.

A great luxurious hotel with pleasant and helpful staff, and wonderful location overlooking the famous beach. The services at the Hotel were excellent. It was spotlessly clean. You get Royal treatment here.

Copacabana This hotel was fabulous! The staff is very attentive and helpful in every way. We loved staying in the old tower overlooking Copacabana beach. The bed and linens were very luxurious—as was the turn down service. The breakfast at Cipriani was wonderful (clearly a destination for locals on the weekend as it was very full Saturday and Sunday). The pool is pretty, but due to the shape of the hotel, the sun is limited to narrow parts of the pool throughout the day. The beach setup was wonderful, with lounge chairs towels and water available. The concierge and front desk staff were very well informed and great at providing suggestions and helping us figure out what we wanted to do and making arrangements for us. We stayed in the old building and can assure you that the A/C was awesome and there was nothing "old" feeling except the charm. There are double glass doors to keep the street noise out. The spa is OK, and certainly not up to the caliber of the hotel itself. While there are both a men’s and a women’s sauna and steam room, the sauna in the men’s side did not appear to be working. There was a lack of attention to the facilities as well. The relaxation room, had not been cleared after lunch, and while staff did come through to refold blankets, the tray of dirty dishes in the room were abandoned for the whole time we were there. The major drawback of the hotel is that I received more bug bites staying there than any of the other places we stayed, including in the rain forest along the coast. On the last day, we pulled back the sheets to find evidence of bed bugs on the mattress (we usually check when we arrive, but didn't think we had to at this caliber of hotel). We mentioned it to the front desk staff, but got a quick apology with no followup. So we emailed the team once we had left. They responded after three days to say that the room had been checked, and no infestation was found. We sent them the pictures we had taken of the corner of the mattress, and they have promised to have their inspection team go over the room again. Our hope is that they will contain anything that’s there soon! We appreciated their response, but I do hope for a better resolution. I'm still itching. Other than that, we would absolutely recommend the Belmond to anyone going to Rio – great location, grand hotel, and great staff!!!
