Belmond Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

To preside lavishly over one of the world’s most well known beaches, book a penthouse suite at the five-star Belmond Copacabana Palace. Here you’ll have a bird's eye view over the coast, where two million people flock to watch the fireworks each New Year's Eve. Named a cultural patrimony of Rio, the 90-year-old landmark once hosted Marilyn Monroe, The Rolling Stones and Diana, Princess of Wales. It retains a French-inspired feel after a 2012 restoration, and the social scene at the expansive pool is as hot as the Rio sun.

See and be seen on Copacabana’s wide swatch of sand. Give up your white-umbrella-clad throne and return for lunch, a feijoada stew – Brazil's national dish – at the poolside bar. Indulge in a spa treatment that uses white clay from the Amazon. Snag a sake cocktail at celeb chef Ken Hom’s MEE restaurant. Sway to bossa nova with a hot local at the piano bar.

Friday 22 September we had the great pleasure of dining at Mee , the Asian restaurant at the Copacabana Palace. It was a delight to taste the 11 steps menu awarded with the Michelin star. It was an incredible dinner superbly explained by our waiter Marlon!! He told us the story and provenance of each dish with a perfect knowledge of the ingredients. Apart from that the ambiance is superb with great art by Belgian painter Develter. Amazing place! A must in RĆo!

Night time is the quintessional time to fly in to rio and into the hotel. the old queen is illuminated like a 30's screen legend on a red carpet, with all her Art Deco curves and accoutrements accentuated as she poses on the Copacabana beachfront. Truely impressive. A we enter the lobby we are offered a thing of beauty- a perfect caipirinha, Brazil's national cocktail made from lime, sugar and cachaca, powerful enough to destroy any demons picked up on the flight over. Our room is cool and airy with a view of the beach. the white & pink marble bathroom hits me like a second cocktail. Gobbled up the chocolates and tried the havaianason for size opting to gift them to someone needy back home as mine are broken in already. the balcony is perfect to watch the Avenida Atlantica with its black and white mosaic pavement. I resisted eating Italian and went to mee for celebrated Asian dishes and more saki than i could possibly try and still remain responsible.

It's a lovely hotel but the noise and disruption from the pool and restaurant building work makes this a place to avoid for now. Shame we weren't alerted to this before arriving. Basically paying $400 a night and not able to relax by the pool because of noise. #feeingletdown

The location of this hotel is amazing right across the road from Copacabana beach. The room itself is lovely but staying for four nights I would have expected consideration of a much better positioned room. I'd suggest anyone staying requests a room on a high floor to get a chance of a reasonable view.
