Belmond Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

To preside lavishly over one of the world’s most well known beaches, book a penthouse suite at the five-star Belmond Copacabana Palace. Here you’ll have a bird's eye view over the coast, where two million people flock to watch the fireworks each New Year's Eve. Named a cultural patrimony of Rio, the 90-year-old landmark once hosted Marilyn Monroe, The Rolling Stones and Diana, Princess of Wales. It retains a French-inspired feel after a 2012 restoration, and the social scene at the expansive pool is as hot as the Rio sun.

See and be seen on Copacabana’s wide swatch of sand. Give up your white-umbrella-clad throne and return for lunch, a feijoada stew – Brazil's national dish – at the poolside bar. Indulge in a spa treatment that uses white clay from the Amazon. Snag a sake cocktail at celeb chef Ken Hom’s MEE restaurant. Sway to bossa nova with a hot local at the piano bar.

From the moment I stepped into the Belmond Copacabana Palace Hotel I was greeted by service and quality that you expect from an iconic hotel. I was booked into the hotel by the head Concierge and was show around the hotel before he took me to my room. After a glass of wine by the penthouse pool I was advised that I was being offered an upgrade because of potential noise in the renovation of the lower level pool. The room was large with a great view of the Copacabana beach front. All the staff I met learned my name and called me by it each time we met. The food is good (Michelin star restaurant ME) and the Cipriani Restaurant and the bars serve excellent cocktails. Late check out and use of the spa after check out. Can't speak highly enough of the Copacabana Palace Hotel.

Stayed for a few days at the Copacabana Palace on the final part of our holiday to celebrate my husband's birthday! The suite we had overlooked the beach and was spacious, relaxing and comfortable. All staff were very helpful, courteous and went out of their way to assist. We ate in the Pergola restaurant overlooking the beach and also in Mee - both very good. On our final night there was a surprise cake and bubbly in the room - a lovely touch to end the holiday ! Many thanks to all the Copa team in making this a wonderful experience !!!

Elegant and upmarket. A terrific hotel, with somewhat snooty staff, less friendly than at their sister hotel at Iguassu. Room was terrific, food extremely good, but on a Sunday we weren't able to get food before 20:00 in the Pergula, a basic restaurant- which isn't so basic. The Italian Cipriani was terrific, but they don't offer a simpler, easy option, which I think is an omission. Sometimes a quick and easy meal is all that is required. But despite the super hotel, I was uncomfortable in Rio. The beach is dirty, the city is dirty... I have no intention of going back to Rio unless I am en route somewhere else. But the hotel itself is TERRIFIC!

I loved this hotel. I did not feel safe in this city. I have traveled all over the world and this is the only city where I wanted to stay and the hotel and not venture out. The food and service at this hotel was amazing! The beach not so much! I hope the folks in Brazil will work on the safety of it's visitors. While we were there one of our fellow travelers was mugged on the beach. We were approached by a homeless person wanting our scraps and you are warned about keeping your cell phones away so they won't get snatched out of your hands.

Perhaps as you would expect, the service here is very good and the reception desk and concierges are valuable sources of maps, information, ticket booking etc. The breakfast buffet is good and my room had all the expected facilities. There is a metro station a few minutes walk away, the Sugar Lòaf is a 30 minute walk and obviously the beaches are on the doorstep. All the staff are friendly and helpful. The fitness centre (open 7am until 10pm) is unusually well equipped for a hotel. I struggled with the free in room wifi which did work but was unreliable (the hotel also has a Business Centre), could not get the television to work and found the housekeeping service a bit full on. The main pool is currently being refurbished (due to reopen some time in August) but guests currently have access ro the 6th floor pool. A very pleasant stay.
