Belmond Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

To preside lavishly over one of the world’s most well known beaches, book a penthouse suite at the five-star Belmond Copacabana Palace. Here you’ll have a bird's eye view over the coast, where two million people flock to watch the fireworks each New Year's Eve. Named a cultural patrimony of Rio, the 90-year-old landmark once hosted Marilyn Monroe, The Rolling Stones and Diana, Princess of Wales. It retains a French-inspired feel after a 2012 restoration, and the social scene at the expansive pool is as hot as the Rio sun.

See and be seen on Copacabana’s wide swatch of sand. Give up your white-umbrella-clad throne and return for lunch, a feijoada stew – Brazil's national dish – at the poolside bar. Indulge in a spa treatment that uses white clay from the Amazon. Snag a sake cocktail at celeb chef Ken Hom’s MEE restaurant. Sway to bossa nova with a hot local at the piano bar.

We dreamed of staying in a suite with a balcony overlooking Copacabana Beach. We found it at the Palace. Belmont understands understatement in luxury and service. The suites are elegant, quiet and simply beautiful. The giant pool is protected from the wind with pool service second to none. Choice if dining, formal or relaxed and everything is a few steps from the famous beach. A dream come true.

The only word to describe this hotel is Perfection! Stayed here for a couple of days at the end of our 3-week South American holiday before our flight back to London. Been to Rio once before and done all the touristy stuff so this time we didn't leave the hotel except to go to the beach a couple of times. Ate our way through all the restaurants in the hotel. Mostly lounged around the pool soaking up the sun between meals and sleeps. Definitely a great way of spending the last couple of days of our holiday. Sleep, eat and swim. Just perfect!

The hotel enjoys prime location on the strip of Copacabana beach and does not disappoint with its interior, cleanliness and offering HOWEVER, the restaurant services is particularly poor with even the simplest dish and drink needing 40 minutes to prepare (even in non peak times). The outdoor area doesn't have the AC units so it is rather hot and uncomfortable to dine inside. Once you do receive your food and beverage order, it is worth the wait and is tasty and good value for money (compared to what the same would cost in another thriving city such as Dubai)

Very efficient check in service , excellent local drivers who work for the hotel , helpful concierge. Breakfast can be a bit of a bun fight but the choices are many and varied. Our room was in the original building with a view of the beach , lovely high ceilings , roomy well equipped bathroom . Some minor quibbles , the TV system is pain , it seemed to need to reboot itself every time it was switched on and the service at lunchtime at Pergula restaurant was awful , having placed an order one had an interminable wait for any food to appear , we ate there a couple of times and it was hard to understand why preparation and presentation of club sandwiches etc took quite so long , but it was good when it came.

Visited Rio twice, last October and again end of January. Second time stayed at this magnificent hotel the Copacabana Palace. Staff were Profession, friendly, efficient and cooperative. What more could you ask for. Food was excellent. Accommodation; large rooms, great views of the beach, clean and well appointed. Pity Latam air couldn't manage to get our bags transferred to our flight from Santiago to Rio, on the same flight, or from the airport to our hotel in under 17 hours. The hotel is across the street from the beach, and the hotel runs out hose lines and waters the sand to keep it cool so that their guests don't burn their feet. Its a long walk from the road to the surf, its the widest beach I have ever seen.
