The view from the rooftop bar is spectacular! Nice bar setup around the pool. As a paying resident at the hotel, I might feel differently about the public sitting around the rooftop pool. However, I was a member of the public and certainly enjoyed the view down on Ipanema. Overall service was very slow, but friendly. With the exception of the head waiter/service manager (?), Claudio if I recall correctly, was simply not up to the job. He rudely ordered the other waiter away and took our order himself. In the best case I must assume he “forgot” us asking for things (napkins, plates, cutlery), while he was “busy” chatting with other tables. Service was very far from usual Sofitel standards.

The only decent thing about this Sofitel is the location and the view (which you have to pay for by booking an ocean view). Otherwise this Sofitel is by far the worst I have stayed. Food and beverage service is atrocious. I don't understand why you have people serving coffee and/or breakfast items when you have to wait a significant amount of time for either to arrive e.g. coffee excess 30 mins and an omelette over 45 mins which was wrong anyhow and eggs Benedict requested without pork which they removed the bacon item but left the ham). One woman (wears hearing aids if hotel wishes to identify the staff member) cleans tables by brushing the crumbs onto the floor and any left cutlery of someone who sat in the seat was not replaced with new. I would have been extremely upset if I had to pay R$88 per person like some do, although no doubt a proportion of cost was factored into my room price. The service by the pool was just as bad. Ordered two Caiparinha's and after 30 mins enquired with manager who said they were made but not delivered. They had to make new ones as the ice had melted in the undelivered lot, again had to wait 20 or so minutes for those. You are better on the beach being served by the people running a barraca, who offered significantly better service and quality for half the price. If you want a coffee you have to pay R$10 or £2 per capsule (ludicrous when they cost 30pence to buy from Nespresso shop direct). And to the housekeeping/maintenance - we are staying during Carnaval probably one of the busiest periods yet only two working lifts. One which had the floor indicator missing, which in a crowded lift is difficult to know which floor was yours. Rooms only adequately cleaned and bed sheets changed for ones with holes in them. Also hammering going on in one of the rooms under us at 9am in the morning, which is not what you need when Carnaval at Sambadrome goes until early morning and you want to have some sleep. Additionally if facing the ocean windows are thin so you can hear everything. Finally we had friends staying at Sofitel in Santa Teresa and were not allowed to finish our drinks in our suite, some ridiculous hotel policy that the impolite receptionist referred to. On check-out the desk asked how our stay was and when indicated disappointing, no sorry to hear or any care as to what the issues were. For a 5-night stay in a Junior Ocean Suite with oceanfront view I paid £2,700 or R$12,300 and this is definitely not value for money. If anything this experience has put me off staying ever again at another Accor brand hotel. Simply awful and probably better hotels to stay in Rio.

This hotel has a great location because is just crossing the street of Ipanema beach. It has a great view from the rooftop which also has a pool. The service is nice and gentil. During Sunday (February) the street of the hotel is closed and you could bike, run or walk!

I have stayed at this hotel for years. It's in Ipanema facing the beach. I like Ipanema because I think it's safer than Copacabana, and the commute to work is easy. I can't recall when this hotel was last renovated but I will guess 7 years ago. When I checked in, my room did not have a hair dryer or complimentary water. The bathroom looks dated and dents and dings are noticeable in the room. Housekeeping did my laundry without my approval. With another face lift and minor tweaks, this could be a really nice hotel.

We had a very comfortable stay here for 6 days. The staff was professional and responsive; the room was nice; the location is GREAT!!! Walkable to restaurants, shops, parks, markets...the beach is right across the street.
