Beautiful partial-ocean view room overlooking the stretching Ipanema beach. The rooms are light and spacious and have everything that you would expect a five-star hotel to have. Breakfast is varied but you do need to pay small supplements for the likes of pancakes, french toast and waffles. Usually included within the price at European hotels. The hotel is right on Ipanema beach and is located in a very safe neighbourhood, with downtown Rio being only a short taxi-journey away.

Sadly I have to report that the high level of theft in Rio de Janeiro is not limited to the streets - if you leave something in your room at this hotel when you check out don't expect to recover it! I have stayed at this hotel many times - great location on Ipanema beach, halfway between Copacabana and Leblon - and have always enjoyed the atmosphere and service until now. I, stupidly, left an item of gold jewelry in the bathroom which vanished into this air according to hotel. Nobody saw it, the staff are 100% trustworthy and the hotel security investigations are unable to reach "any conclusion" about its disappearance. I will not be staying there again. Yes it's my fault I left the jewelry behind but in a 5* hotel like this you expect the staff to be trustworthy and the management to be professional. Sadly neither is true.

Our room had a huge bed, great views and fluffy towels. The staff are absolutely first class especially Juan on the front desk. He was very helpful, spoke very good English and went way beyond his role to help us with travel advice and checkin for our flights. The staff in the 2 nd floor restaurant were very accommodating during breakfast and again helpful with advice. We had drinks on the 23rd floor by the pool and the atmosphere and ambience is wonderful. Would come back here again as the hotel is handy to lots of restaurants and shopping and being right on the beach it is in an ideal location. The room was spotless, the service of staff was excellent and we were able to sleep as the room was very soundproof.

The hotel is still not up-to-date and needs a lot of renovation to be considered OK for its high price (see also pictures). At the moment around 100 EUR/ 120 USD would be a fair price for the luxury rooms. Unfortunately the hotel asks for much more. Here is a fair list of the pros and cons: PRO - well located in the middle of Ipanema - very good beach service (sun beds, sun shades and towels) including security guards trying to protect your personal items - perfect view from roof top bar and gym - nice view from luxury rooms with sea view - as Club Accor Platinum member I could check out late at 16:00 - very welcoming and friendly staff at the reception and in the entrance area - even after the check-out the hotel offered the free usage of all its venue - good and silent air-conditioning CONS - the bathrooms are awful in the luxury rooms (look like last renovation was in the 1980s) - the building itself and its facilities need renovation (not luxury, not worth 5 stars) - the windows are very old and do not protect from any noice - you hear every car driving by on the 6 lanes road in front of the hotel which is always busy - the walls are thin - we could hear our neighbors having a shower when lying in the bed and woke up when they moved chairs in the morning what we heard quite well - the cleaning was not thorough (e.g. from the 1st to the last day there was stuff underneath our bed from the people that slept in the room before us) - when I left my jacket in the bar I tried to call the reception, bar and restaurant - all where not reachable for 20 Min (around noon), then I walked up to the bar where I waited for another 15 Min without any staff being there - finally I went down to the reception that could help me (this lack of presence on the phone and in the bar happened more than once) - the room has a Nespresso machine with capsules standing right next to it - in our room there was no price written on it...when checking out, the hotel asked for 10R$ for each capsule used...in the end we did not need to pay, but take care when using them! Anyway it is strange - I am a lot in hotels all over Europe, Africa and Asia and never had to pay for any coffee or tea offered in the room. Especially for the high price of the hotel it is embarrassing not to offer the capsules complimentary. - we arrived at the hotel already at 12:00 as we hoped for an early check-in as Platinum member, but of course a normal check-in until 15:00 would have been ok - during the check in we were told that our room gets absolute priority and we could wait in the bar...our room was only ready at 15:45 and we had to go down every hour to the reception where they told us "should be ready soon" - (no active service) - the price and the 5 stars do not reflect the standard the hotel offers - the pool is nothing more than a huge bathtub (very small) surrounded by lunch/dinner tables (the fotos in the internet are well done, but give a wrong imagination)

I frequently stay at this hotel in Ipanema when I visit Rio. It changed many times its flagship being now at Sofitel. The location at he heart of Ipanema with the beach only crossing the street is super. Nice views from the roof top pool that is of course very tiny. Rooms need remodeling....old bathrooms, old furniture.....functional but missing he charm to connect to the location. One big advantage though is he pastisserie shop at the ground floor that allowed me to skip the expensive and overwhelming breakfast buffets to a classic croissant with an expresso and the pastry to start well the day.
