Reviews for Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico

Very Average

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 13 hours ago

Do not spend more than $250 per night to stay here. Definitely rent a car! The food here is terrible! The hotel is in the middle of nowhere and unless you rent a car you will be stuck eating bad pizza or hamburgers with snail like service. The beach is nothing special and the water is chock full of seaweed so you can barely swim in it. The staff is apathetic and appears to spend 99% of their time driving golf carts on the beach like it’s a race track. While sunbathing expect to hear noisy golf carts on the beach at least every 5 minutes crisscrossing the massive property. They practically run guests off the walking path since there’s always a golf cart bearing down on you. Note, the golf carts rarely transport guests and you will see guests walking most of the time while male staff are constantly tooling around in golf carts. The property is supposed to use the golf carts to transport guests but 99% of the time guests are walking while staff are comfortably driving around in carts. When I was walking back to my room in the pouring rain and getting soaked 2 golf carts whizzed by and not one staff member offered to take me to my room. That tells you the level of service you can expect at this 3 star hotel. I asked one staff member whizzing by in a cart to help me open an umbrella and he told me that he is part of housekeeping and doesn’t do that! Also, there is never any fresh food except for the $36 breakfast buffet. After breakfast it’s greasy fast food in the form of bad pizza and burgers for lunch and dinner. The pool bar doesn’t have any food and Hyatt has the nerve to put a food truck next to the pool bar when they are charging almost $500 a night to stay here! A food truck is cheap, tacky and unacceptable for any hotel especially one that is supposedly a 4 star hotel. It screams we are not going to spend any money on providing quality food! It’s clear this Hyatt is cutting corners and nowhere on par with other Hyatt Regency hotels. When I arrived at 12:30 pm on Monday they said I could get a burger at the sports bar or get a salad, pizza or sandwich from the lobby bar. All yuck. No one wants greasy barely edible fast food in the hot sun. There was no lunch buffet with freshly prepared fruits, vegetables and entrees. This hotel doesn’t bother to try because they know you’re a captive audience stuck in the middle of nowhere. It’s critical to rent a car if you stay here so you can get some delicious puerto rican food or edible food in general! No matter what do not order the arroz con pollo they serve here. Absolutely gross! Oh and at 12 pm when the lobby bar opened I ordered a mango mojito only to be told they don’t have any mint. How is a bar out of ingredients when it just opened? All food is extremely overpriced - a breakfast sandwich, yogurt and small bottled water costs $22. They also are not accustomed to guests using credit cards much to my surprise. Every time I told them I was not charging my food or drink to the room but paying for it with my card, there was a pause- it was clear that they preferred you charge everything to the room. One time they told me my card declined which was hogwash because the credit card company told me the charge went through and was pending. When I notified the manager of this, she said I needed to contact Hyatt Regency’s accounting office if I had any issues with credit card charges. I informed her I would do no such thing and that once my credit card company told me my card was fine I planned to continue using it and did not expect any issues in the future. She then responded that sometimes the credit card machine takes time to process and the card may appear declined when it’s not. So basically this hotel is run like a 5 and dime because a multimillion dollar hotel chain should be able to process credit card charges without any issues or delay. Especially since PR is not a foreign country and part of the US of A! It’s apparent this is not a first rate hotel by any stretch of the imagination. Guests are also permitted to bring radios to the beach and play music - so you can forget about sunbathing with any peace and quiet. The rooms are newly renovated, modern and spacious with real bathrooms (4 walls and a door). That’s it!

A Little Hit and Miss

Just returned from five nights at the Hyatt Grand Reserve. We enjoyed our stay, with a few concerns. The Good: • The building and grounds are exceedingly well maintained. Our room in building eight smelled clean and fresh and housekeeping was thorough every day. We had a problem with our shower one day and maintenance was there to fix it literally five minutes after we called. First rate in this regard. • The hotel beach is beautiful. It’s reef protected, so the water is calm and there is little-to-no seaweed. There are abundant lounge chairs and good food and beverage service from the Kayak bar. • Service is very good. The entire staff is friendly and helpful. Specific thanks to Paola at the concierge desk, who arranged excursions and transfers for us, Steve at the pool bar, who took great care of us and Carlos on the beach, who works hard to make sure every guest has what they need. The only exception was that the lobby bar seemed understaffed in the evening, so the wait for a drink was typically 30 minutes. The Not-So-Good: • Because of the Hyatt's remote location, guests are pretty captive to the on-site restaurants and our experiences with dinners there were wildly uneven. I did appreciate that all of the restaurants take advance reservations and our reservation times were honored reasonably well each night. I strongly recommend reserving in advance because the guests who didn’t were often turned away. Our best dining experience was at Nori on the fusion side. The sushi there was very good and everything we ordered was served promptly. The local Puerto Rican cuisine at Nectar was also quite tasty, though we had some service issues there. The Service at Nori Teppanyaki was slow and the prices were a bit high for the food that you get. Our experience at Prime 787 was disastrous. There were several large dining groups the night we were there, which I know is a challenge for the staff, but our waitress disappeared for literally 20 minutes at a time, on multiple occasions. People sitting by us got up and left. We ordered drinks and apps first and our entrees later, but all the food arrived at the same time. The food was less than warm when it arrived and all of the expensive steaks were over-done. Dinner took over three hours to complete. I’d avoid this restaurant. • The property is very spread out, with our room roughly a quarter-mile from the public areas. We didn’t mind the walk when the weather was good but, unfortunately, it rained in the evening every night we were there. The hotel uses golf carts to shuttle guests from the lobby to the distant rooms but when everyone needs a golf cart it takes a long time. Plus, the golf carts are open on the sides, so you get soaked when it’s raining anyway. It would be nice if there was a restaurant at the far end of the property (seafood, maybe) for people who don’t want to trek to the main building to eat each night. Again, we had a good time and certainly enjoyed the quality facilities and friendly staff. But given the number of high-end resorts to choose from in PR, I doubt we will return.

Not impressed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 20 hours ago

Was not very impressive. Several things that turned me off. Most items at the breakfast buffet were barely above room temperature even though it should have been hot. They do not take cash anywhere on the resort. I do not like cashless societies. The only national news they offer in the rooms is CNN. Had to listen to non-stop Orange Man bad instead of getting any real news.

We stayed at the resort for a wedding and everything was so nice. The room was great and comfortable. The beach access was calm and so close to our room. The pool was great.
