First time in Mexico for family wedding/vacation. The first trip I've been on where someone else made the plans. OMG this place is over the top in every since of the saying! So beautiful, very impressive food and service, so friendly, can't imagine anything better! Hope to return soon!

The Belmond Maroma resort is great if you're looking for an intimate, private getaway with a quiet atmosphere. As anyone knows looking into it, it is essentially the only one in the area and price range that is a non-all inclusive, though breakfast is complimentary. Enclosed is my pros & cons list. Bear in mind I had to go to solo for a wedding and stayed only for the weekend. Pros: - Quiet, intimate. Two small private pools on either end. The beach hardly has anyone at all, and just looking down in either direction to the neighboring resorts you notice those are packed. - Very polite / kind staff, which is par for the course for Westins and other resorts I have stayed at. - Beautiful beach with no problem setting up on lay-beds and umbrellas which are included. - Breakfast is grand and delicious. Very filling--likely would not be able to eat until early dinner. - I hear the spa is world-class. - Fresh delivered coffee to your room at the time you request. - A private gazebo / patio adjoined to your place, most with a hammock. Cons: - Right off, I was a little put off that they could not honor the wedding-group rate because I could only come for 2 out of 3 the nights, at a time where the resort was largely empty. They had the space, it was a miscommunication, and by refusing the request it just doesn't make well for much loyalty. But business is business I suppose. - Even a soft drink costs money--$6 a pop, pun intended. Water bottles are included. Aside that and breakfast, all else is on your own with difficult-to-obtain prices. - My room was not amenable to being comfortable in unfortunately. There was a large clunky table in front of my large window which precluded me opening and shutting the door-like swinging shutters. So people could see in walking by and it was quite an act to close the shutters while i'm dripping and ready to get out my bathing suit. They would randomly be opened or closed based on the cleaning team too. This was one of the most frustrating things, and there was no other place to put the large table and chairs that wouldn't make getting around the room very difficult. - As an oncology fellow I sleep very little. Sleeping in is the number 1 appeal of any vacation. There, the window high above the sink has a diffuser which essentially pours white morning sun into your room at 630am or whenever sunrise is. I tried everything to jimmyrig it--put a binder and towels in front of it, etc--all to no avail. I totally thought it was an automatic light the first morning. It was honestly a huge bummer. Like I said, overall, if cost isn't an issue and privacy is important, this place is nice, which is why it received 4 instead of 3 stars from me. I know people needs are different. If there was a subset for value, it would obviously be less. My wife and I are both oncologists; its not about the money spent, its just that I value value, and have had equally hospitable service without some of the inconveniences I mentioned above at other resorts inclusive-and-not over the world. I don't think anyone could book this place and leave disappointed.

An unforgettable romantic weekend on a paradisiacal beach with the best hotel staff, room, food and amenities. All the staff members were always willing to pleased my husband and I. From morning to bedtime, the staff pampered us. Food was beyond good and we were pleased to try different Mexican food . Truly the best experience of the Riviera maya we have ever had.

Visit: 4 May thru 9 May 2017 This was our 4th stay at Belmond Maroma, formally Orient Express. Again, our expectations were exceeded even with the ownership change since our last stay. Many of the staff were the same, which we consider as a good sign when revisiting a property like Belmond Maroma. Attention to detail is the characteristic that best describes the staff and overall property maintenance. We view this location as returning home to the most romantic location on the Riviera Maya. The only thing we missed and we would suggest the staff reimplement are the Mayan history and custom notes that were always placed on your bed for evening turndown service.

I think this space is not big enough to say everything we have to about this wonderful property. The rooms are very well decorated, the food is amazing in every restaurant, all the staff members of the restaurants are always willing to pleased you even to prepare some whim that will provoke us. The beach is one of the most beautiful ones that I have visited and the service they provide on the beach makes you want to stay there all day, they pamper you with simple details along the day. Christi (guest service manager) Was always waiting to meet our requirements. It was an unforgettable stay, for sure we will be back. Thank you to the general manager who was always around asking everyone about their stay.
