We usually go every year to St. Martin every April. This year, due to Irma, we switched to Roatan. The Resort is sweet; great rooms; decent food, great people, but the infra-structure is a mess. Enough rain the the first 2 days to seriously hamper going anywhere on the island the rest of the trip...and, when we could go, there is really not much to see. The switch in Houston, as with any plane switch, doubles the time to get there...as really any plane change to go anywhere does. It is a scuba divers destination, as it shares the barrier reef with Belize. It is the cash cow for Honduras, is a political mess right now...but it is far enough off the coast (approx. 70mi.) not to be of any concern. We would only consider going back if they put on direct flights...maybe. You do not rent a car. Period. Hire a driver to go anywhere...they stay and wait while you do whatever you do, no matter how long. Not expensive.

Stay: 4/14-4/21/2018 Air & Transport: American 1/week Saturday flight from DFW. Barefoot took care of transport to and from! Pre-stay questions: Stephanie was quick to respond to any and all questions we had. After seeing a segment on NBC news on the topic, we asked Stephanie if there were any local charities that could use some supplies from the US and she had two great charities to suggest. We brought some children medicine for a local clinic and got some donations from my office for a local educational charity there! So happy to help! Why Barefoot? We initially were going to stay on the west side. We’d read that’s where you should stay, but, because of an error, Booking.com suggested Barefoot as an alternative. We are SO happy with how things ended up. More below. Diving: We ended up booking at Barefoot and decided to get scuba certified before we came. So glad we did. Barefoot’s dive shop was very accommodating to our beginner status … and any level diver, really. Everyone we met had a great dive. The team made sure, no matter the weather as well (as it rained a few days), we would go to a spot that would be a great dive. The first two days we attended the 8:30 am dive, then every day thereafter we were on both morning dives. They made sure we stayed hydrated and always enjoyed the watermelon on the (super short) rides back to the shop! Accommodations: Awesome, awesome, awesome! We were in the cottage and it was so relaxing, and so quiet! I’m so glad we didn’t stay on the “west-side,” as I’m sure we wouldn’t have had as many quiet afternoon naps as we did here. The rain may have made some bugs come in one night, and the staff was quick and friendly to help us ‘raid’ them out, while not harming any cute geckos that I’m aware of 😊 . Food & Drink: We opted for the meal package and glad we did. They had a set menu, and it had enough options for us to be happy with it for a week, even when I couldn’t enjoy some of the items with my bivalve allergy. We focused on diving the entire week, so we really didn’t get out much otherwise. Water was filtered and I drank from the tap and used my toothbrush in the faucet and all was well with my sensitive stomach. Activities Other than Diving: We did leave to visit the sloth sanctuary, which was not far from Barefoot. It was great, and they arranged a taxi for us to take us there and back. We did not go out at night; not really our thing. Others that stayed at Barefoot used the kayaks, brought their fishing poles, some of the kids did their own “Bubble Certificate” where they got to wear the diving gear in the pool, others went out in the evening, did ziplining… and everyone had a smile on their face. Really cool things: Barefoot gives you a cell phone that you can use in the room or even take with you if you go out. As I usually get confused with international plans and technology in general, I really appreciated this and thought it was a great idea!

We recently stayed at the Barefoot Cay Resort and really enjoyed ourselves! Gary, the property manager and his wife offer a very personable service and even brought the guests homemade treats like chocolate chip cookies and frozen banana treats on few occasions. They have a few dogs on the property and they make frequent appearances greeting the guests! The rooms were very nice and had the BEST mattress & bedding I have ever slept on in a hotel! All the staff were very helpful and went out of their way to accommodate your request. There were a few negatives however. There really isn't much of a beach and it is very remote with no where to really walk to if you are into that. So If you want to lounge by a pool at a small, boutique hotel, this is the place for you! I also need to mention the infamous Roatan Sand Fleas. They are a problem. To BFC's credit, they spray for them multiple times a day and will do more upon request, but they are everywhere. Even at the pool. Bug spray didn't seem to help much.

We stayed here for 8 nights and couldn't have been happier. It was windy while there, so we ended up diving at Westend and only snorkeling here. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The room was nice. The only drawback of the restaurant is that you must order in advance. But te food was excellent.

A resort like many others that cater to divers of which we are not. We were looking for seclusion, quiet, sun and we found it here. No vendors. This is your private little island you share with 3 other cabins. All of which set on the sea shore. The ocean breeze thru the windows day and night. The food at the restaurant was amazing. The supper entrees are prepared specifically and without a doubt some of the best food on the island. Beef Caprisso is to die for! I promise! The entire staff did everything the could to make it an outstanding stay and they succeeded greatly. Get the Romance Package added on for sure. You will be glad you did. You are going to love this place, we did!
