My husband and I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights for the first part of our honeymoon. We chose the hotel as my husband has stayed in Gran Melia's before and always had a great experience. We felt it would be the perfect place to see the sites of Rome but still have the romantic relaxation we were after. I had informed the hotel prior to arrival it was our honeymoon and had booked a Junior Red Level Suite. When we arrived we were greeted with a glass of prosecco and a lovely lady who checked us in. She informed us she would show us to our room but there was also an upgrade available for a small supplement and we could look at it if we like. She showed us the Junior Suite and we ask to look at the upgrade as we thought we might treat ourselves, as it's our honeymoon. We were shown an absolutely amazing suite, which we were both extremely excited about. We said we would like to upgrade and how much would it cost. The lady then informed us it was 1900 euros a night!!!!!!!!! We had paid 2600 euros for 4 nights! This made us very upset, as of course there was no way this was within our budget and we should of never been shown the room. We now felt very unsatisfied with the room we had and made us from being very excited to a real low. The Junior Suite is nice but extremely dark and you feel as if you are in a cave underground. We asked if we could see the room one up from ours, which we were shown and much preferred but were told it would be 1000 euros extra for our stay. We could not see why it was so much money, as although it had an outside area the room was smaller than the one we had and the bathroom was not as nice. The other issue is the soundproofing is terrible, we also have a child staying above us which is constantly running around and it's very loud! We then had a call from guest services to say they had arranged a free upgrade for us! We couldn't believe it and was looking forward to seeing the room. When we got shown the room, I realised it was actually the category down from what we paid. When I asked her why she had shown it to us and calling it an upgrade, she said she thought we would like to see it because it was lighter than ours! I couldn't believe that they were trying to down grade our room and never suggested refunding us the difference between the rooms. The second to last night we had a note left for us informing us that we could have a Bali bed experience by the pool the next day. We both were looking forward to this. We were shown to one of the Bali beds, which was nice. We were then completely left to our own devices! I do not know what the experience was! My husband went up and ordered food and drinks, no one ever came round an asked. When we did have lunch by the pool the plates were left for two hours. My husband had a little nap and woke up to the bed being invested with ants and being bitten everywhere. He then had to take the tray back to the restaurant. I have never ever stayed in a hotel of this class where the pool service was so terrible. It completely started our honeymoon off badly and we feel very let down by the hotel. I really thought the hotel would be perfect place for a honeymoon and I am so disappointed. I do however want to mention that the room was kept very clean and the maids did a great job.I would also like to say the hotel is beautiful and the food is excellent. The price of drinks is ridiculous though, so be warned by that. I would recommend the Red Level service. We also had a lovely time in the spa. On our final night we heard another guest talking to the staff and the same thing had happened to them, where they were shown this amazing suite they could never afford. It's a awful sales tactic. I can honestly say I have never been so disappointed with a hotel. My husband and I really thought it would be such an amazing honeymoon and it was completely spoilt. This is something that will always stay with us and I my advice to any honeymooners do not choose this hotel!

It takes a great deal to please us, I dread going anywhere new actually, but this hotel was such a surprise and was the perfect location for our visit to Rome. We arrived here angry, hot and tired after checking out of a 'leading' five star hotel that was not up to we were tired after a long drive from Tuscany and beginning to regret coming at all by the time we arrived. The Gran Melia turned things around in a heartbeat. The scented lobby and welcome drinks. The spotless design hotel with flawless staff really are showing Rome how to do service and hospitality at every level. Think Four Seasons and this is it in Rome. EVERY single member of staff without fail were gracious, warm and were all keen to do anything they possibly could to make our stay joyful and memorable. It would be impossible to list them all, and unfair but may I just congratulate the team for being exceptional and making our stay such a happy one. The split level junior suite was perfect for our needs as a family of four with lovely views of beautiful Rome. Quiet, spotless and clean with terrific bathrooms. Fabulous. We loved the service and the instant impression one has that everything is well considered, carefully done and the small touches were so thoughtful....everywhere in every corner we could find no fault. The pool area was sublime with a deeply relaxing pool side vibe, comfortable loungers and bali beds - gorgeous warm pools, excellent pool service and a wonderful stark contrast to the bustling hot Rome at this time of year. You would never guess you were in a capital city. It is so relaxing and we enjoyed combining sightseeing with sunbathing. The restaurants were great, we enjoyed all of the dishes, and the grace and professionalism of the waiting team were appreciated and enjoyed each evening, so much so we really didn't want to go elsewhere. The bistro was fun with light mist and cool cocktails and a relaxed candle lit atmosphere. My advice would be to book a clarins full body massage the minute you arrive to really make the most of your break there. The spa experience was out of this world, and literally took me to another world. I am already missing not being there! Certainly we are coming back to this hotel, we are planning a return trip in the autumn. Rome is an amazing city, and this is is without a doubt the best hotel!

We stayed at this hotel for our honeymoon, we paid €850 for 2 nights, in our opinion this was far too much money. There was nothing wrong with the hotel as such we just couldn't justify its price for how average the room was. Our room was dark with a tall block of flats opposite so we had the curtains permanently closed. When we complained they said we had already had an 'upgrade' and that all rooms in set categories are priced the same regardless of the view. Around the pool they have lovely 4 poster beds, apparently you are only allowed to sit on one of these if you have a certain type of room, even if they are 90% empty. The beers were €12 for a small bottle and cocktails €17 around the pool. I can't see the justification though in selling the same brand of beer at €9.50 euros more than it is down the road when you are already paying a fortune to stay here. We had food in the more formal restaurant, the food was very good and was €170. We didn't mind this part as it was better food than you could find elsewhere. The location is good for the Vatican but is quite a hike from our favourite area near the Spanish steps.

This spot is great place to stay when in Rome. A family friendly place...But not over-run with loud children...The pool in summer is worth a million bucks! Staff is super friendly and helpful. I travel 75k miles per year and stay on variety of hotel classes...From Marriott courtyard to Ritz, Four Seasons, Post Ranch Inn, Dylan Amsterdam etc. I think Melia Rome is going for cool hi-end boutique-feel and for me totally achieves it. From check-in to restaurant to pool staff to valet all friendly and professional. I Highly Recommend!

Just returned from a mini break celebrating our wedding anniversary. This hotel is beautiful, in a quieter part of town but a great location for spending time in The Vatican City. We were 'red level' guests and were made to feel especially welcome and all of the staff are friendly and helpful. The pool is a real benefit especially in July and we spent a few hours each day in the afternoon relaxing after lots of walking. There were very few negatives but some of the service levels were a bit shoddy - missed orders at breakfast and when ordering drinks by the pool, long waits for drinks ordered by the pool and a lack of sun beds for some people returning to the hotel late in the afternoon but on the whole it was a lovely experience.
