I have been at Gran Melia for work reason and I was impressed at the first sight. Pool, sauna, gym and many areas to enjoy a moment of relax. Staff really polite and very professional. Room was very comfy and clean with a stunning view over Castel S.Angelo. Even the shower with glass walls with a view over the room was really amazing. The pool area was really elegant, nice place for an aperitivo. Really good service also at the restaurant, server really helpful. One negative thing were the restaurant's prices, really expensive. 19€ for a carbonara, not so good I have to say, are really over every logic. I'd suggest to stay at Gran Melia to spend a few days in Rome, but I'd eat somewhere else.

Be prepared -- you will be nickel and dimed throughout your entire stay at the Gran Melia. It was a true pain trying to dissect our charges and understand the fees they were imposing on us during our stay. The service is not 5 star quality, closer to a 3 aspiring to be a 4. I am still wondering why I paid over €600/night. The only saving graces concerning this hotel: the location and liquid garden. The garden is beautiful and the glass-partitioned breakfast room and bar is lovely. Apart from this, you will be met with extortionate fees. From the extra commission the hotel charges you for hiring cabs and booking reservations to the odd breakfast €29.99 'special' that can only be purchased the evening prior to your breakfast and doesn't include a la carte items, expect them to gouge you wherever they can. Not to mention our bathroom shower drain did not work properly. The shower overflowed after 15mins. The A/C did not work. Called the front desk 3 times about this. They sent someone up the first time, then 'adjusted' the temperature from the front desk and sent someone up again. We slept with the windows open each night to cool off the room. These windows opened up to a noisy Italian ally. Not the best night's sleep.

The hotel is spacioous with well maintaine rooms and grounds. The service is first class, polished and professional while warm and friendly. Rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable, The note; is well located for the Vatican and the hotel bus runs regularly to central Rome.
