Reviews for The Westin Excelsior Rome
After staying two nights in Rome we moved to Westin Excelsior. Rooms were spacious with a classic style and bright lighting which I liked personally though the carpets needed deep cleaning. The quality of sleep was excellent with comfortable beds and pillows. The bathroom was spacious with two sinks, shower and bath tub which made us at ease thought the amenities were not enough as we had to order tooth brush, comb, and cotton buds which I consider as a standard at 5 star hotels plus soap and shampoo were not refilled for the second night. All in all it was a pleasant stay at the Westim excelsior wirh proximity to the city center, transport and main attractions

This is a five star hotel, for the most part. But there are parts of the Hotel that have not been given any attention for years. We were first put in a small room on fifth floor with a terrace. There was mildew on the bathroom door. The water pressure was non-existent. The carpeting and curtains were ancient. We were able to change rooms after 3 nights to a second floor room, which was much larger, updated , no mildew, and great water pressure in the shower. The beds are comfortable. The Hotel has history and a good reputation, and I hope that soon all the rooms will live up to the standards that was set by that history

Oh Roma Roma, World’s capital of grand history and endless romance. This is an eternal city where you can literally feel the love in the air as you explore these ancient opulent ruins, inspiring mastery pieces of art, ultra-vibrant streets, and mouth-watering gourmet (be it pasta, pizza, or gelato). Westin Rome is a romantic dream, this 1906 hotel is rich in history and is cutting a stately figure on the famous “Via Vento”, the original backdrop of Fellini’s 1960 Classic “La Dolce Vita”, giving us the full taste of its definition of “The Sweet Life”. Westin Rome is also just few steps away from these Italian Made World Famous Landmarks; Trevi Foundation, The Spanish Steps, Pantheon, and Colosseum. Offering you the full “Roman Explorer” experience, the true luxury that comes with the old-world charm. Upon our arrival, we heard the voice echoed “Mr. and Mrs. Gouret, Welcome to Westin Rome, we will escort you to your “Grand Luxe Suite”. Follow me, this way. Each floor is museum like, filled with grand crystal chandeliers, floor-to-ceiling marble glams, stucco ceilings, colossal golden frame mirrors, gorgeous paintings, oriental carpets, elegant moldings, and marvelous 19th century empire decors and furniture. The hotel gives you an experience of being on set of a movie, and now you know the reason why “La Dolce Vita” was filmed around the hotel as well as in the hotel for The Hollywood Famous Musical “Nine” featuring Nicole Kidman, Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cottillard, Penelope Cruz, and Kate Hudson. Talking about fame, Westin Rome has been hosting Hollywood celebrities, statesmen, and glamorous jetsetters for more than a century. For example, the hotel hosted the whole cast and crew of Ben-Hur back in 1959. Westin Rome features 280 rooms and 35 suites. All the guest rooms here are decorated in elegant style and all come with crystal chandelier, floor-to-ceiling-marble-only kind of bathroom, walk-in closet, ultra-premium linens, and grand beds. Westin also has wide range of restaurants and bars. Doney’s is not to be missed, once the home center of Fellini’s paparazzi (in the flim La Dolce Vita). That is right, the word paparazzi originated here. We love Doney’s as it offers amazing patisseries as well as the fine dining. Our 75 square meters Grand Luxe suite is blessed with not one, not two, but three beautiful terraces boasting the beautiful view over Via Vento and setting in real luxury. It is safe to say that this is a recall of La Dolce Vita by the unmistakable style. The suite features private entrance, separated spacious living room, master bedroom with walk-in closet, marble on marble bathroom with sinks for him and her, stunning red velvet curtains, Bohemian crystal chandelier, tailored made grand carpet, faux chimney, grand decoration, and all things loyal tones of red and gold. Feeling like staying on the hotel property all day? All of these options are up for grab; floating in the private indoor swimming pool, sweating it of at the gym, rejuvenating at the spa, or sipping sun downer and having authentic Roman Cuisine at Doney’s. Westin Rome is also home to the largest suite in the entire Italy, the unparalleled “Villa La Cupola”. This 1,098 square meters suite is located on both fifth and sixth floor of the hotel, overlooking the dazzling Via Veneto. The 12 meters high dome of Westin Rome is the living room of Villa La Cupola Suite. The suite has its very own private elevator, fitness, sauna, steam bath, private wine cellar, 7 terraces, and its show stopper – the private Jacuzzi pool with mosaic floors. This suite is definitely on our bucket list, upon our return we most definitely will need to stay here. Until we meet again our dear Westin Rome. La Dolce Vita!

My husband and I were here for a business conference being held at the hotel, so we didn’t really have a choice about staying here. We had read the awful reviews on TripAdvisor and elsewhere re: the run down state of this hotel, but were remaining optimistic. We arrived around noon and dragged our luggage up the stairs (no ramp) while the doorman watched. The first impression of the lobby gave us hope that the place was not as bad as reviews had mentioned- it was indeed a lovely lobby. I am a Gold Starwood Points member and presented my number to the front desk staff, but this was not acknowledged in anyway- no room upgrade, no free amenity offered- and certainly no early check in. Our luggage was taken to be stored until our room was ready. I followed the porter because I needed to get something out of the luggage, and he showed me to the room where our luggage would be kept, which seemingly doubled as a smoking lounge break room for the employees. Not an ideal place to store people’s clothing... We returned later in the afternoon and were shown the room, which based on the emergency exit floor plan, was clearly the smallest room on the floor. I guess there was no free SPG gold upgrade going on here. To say this place is run down is an understatement. The carpet was old and dirty, the walls were dirty and paint peeling away, the drapes coated in a layer of dust. The apparent serious structural issues with the room would have me calling an engineer in if this were my house! There was literally a 1 square foot crater in the floor under an area of carpet that if you stepped on it you would sink down a good 5 inches into the floor! The walls had some seriously wide cracks running the entire length of walls and ceilings, crossing over corners and angles, on exteriors walls that made me worry we might fall through the floor! The room was incredibly warm and we kept the windows open the entire 4 days. Our allergies were on over drive sleeping in this room and we seriously tried to be out as much as possible. My husband graciously took the side of the bed that was sinking, and the poor guy didn’t sleep for 3 nights. So much for a “heavenly bed.” I do give credit to the wonderfully friendly housekeeping staff who came twice a day. They did they best job they could given what they had to work with. Unfortunately, every moment spent in the room was spent avoiding touching the filth that surrounded you. You know it’s bad when the turndown service places a towel on the floor next to each side of the bed so your bare feet never need to touch the filthy carpet... You might ask why we didn’t ask to change rooms. Well, after talking to others it sounded like most rooms were in this state and we were worried we might actually get moved into worse! We had planned to stay extra days after the conference, but chose to rescue our Roman vacation by cashing in Starwood points at another hotel. I gave the front desk notice of our early check out 2 days in advance. I asked if there would be a cancellation fee and was told yes!! It was at this point I felt enough was enough! I asked why? I’ve given you over 24 hrs notice AND I am a gold SPG member. All of a sudden a lot of frantic typing occurs on the computer and I am told “there will be no charge.” I guess the rules around here change depending on if they like the look of you... Starwood and the Westin brand should be embarrassed to offer this hotel to customers.
