The Buccaneer in Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands

Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Walk through rustling palms to Mermaid Beach, a protected cove of white sand. Sail to Buck Island, named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic. Spot endangered brown pelicans nesting on this national monument and keep an eye out for green turtles and hawksbill turtles coming ashore in the summertime. Return to the resort for a private candlelit dinner for two inside the ancient limestone sugar mill.

It is an absolutely beautiful hotel with beautiful views from anywhere in the hotel. The staff are so friendly and professional and do anything in their power to make your stay unforgettable. We went with friends that were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. When we checked in, their room was upgraded to a room directly on the beach and our room was at the hotel on the hill. Our friend stated that they would like us to be near them, and staff quickly settled us in a room almost next to them right on the beach with no upgrade costs to us. If course, we were so grateful and appreciative which made our vacation so much more enjoyable from day one. The food especially the breakfasts each morning and dinners on Mermaid Beach was extraordinary. GO, YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!

Just finished up a week at The Buccaneer. It is truly one of the more beautiful properties in the Caribbean. The views, whether up the hill at the Great House, or down the beach, are stunning. A quick summary of our stay: Check-in was a breeze, which was great, as we had a 14-hour travel day, thanks to airline delays. Ashton was extremely welcoming, as were the rest of the front desk staff. We were given the corner room in the great house, which had a stunning balcony that was open on two sides, providing an incredible view. It was a king room, that I think would have been fine for two people, but as we have a child that normally sleeps on a rollaway, it was EXTREMELY tight. Take that into consideration when booking thru a "vacations" website, as once you're booked, there isn't much ability to change. I offered to pay the hotel directly for an upgrade, but there was no availability by the time we figured this out (there are SEVERAL options on rooms at The Bucc). The room itself seemed a bit dated, and like it could have used some TLC, but was still nice, and well-furnished. Comfortable bed. Large bathroom. We didn't plan on being in the room much, so we easily made due, with the smaller room. I had the ability to go into one of the Ocean View rooms while there, and they were much larger, more updated, and well-appointed. Not to mention, they're right on the ocean. Breakfast is the best Ive seen in several Caribbean vacations. There is literally something for everyone, served in a huge buffet (food seemed fresh everyday, and not like it had been sitting for hours), with the view of the sea, as the backdrop. The hill...Lots of other reviews have mentioned in the hill. It is quite a walk, going up, but there are plenty of shuttles available for those that don't want to make the walk. Mermaid Beach- Incredible beach. Beautiful water and sand, and lots of palm trees. Lots of activities. Easy access to waitstaff, or the Mermaid Restaurant. Grotto Beach and Pool- Like an entirely different and unique resort, within the same property. Again, another large, beautiful beach, but this side has much smaller access to swimming and playing, due to the reef, just off the beach. This was AWESOME for those of us that like to snorkel. We got some great photos here. Pool is also right off the beach as well. Grotto Restaurant- Julian and Bobby deserve some special recognition. Julian is awesome at serving drinks and making sure all of us were taken care of, always with a smile. Bobby has been cooking there for over 20 years (according to Elizabeth, the owner), and he makes the best burger on the island. All of the food at the Grotto is great, and I think that shows by the cook. Taxis to town were easy. Our driver on most occasions was named Bachelor. Id ask for him again, as he had a clean van, great personality, and was always on time. Kids Camp- Awesome. We were certainly leery of dropping off our 7 year old, in a foreign land, but she loved it. We actually saw them several times throughout the day, as they'd walk down for some beach time, walk over to club room, etc. This can't be oversold. Polly and the staff are great with the kids, and with putting our minds at ease. If you're wanting a few hours of alone time, kids camp is the way to do it. They serve them lunch, they provide constant activities, so your kids aren't missing out on anything, and are fully engaged. We also enjoyed the Tuesday night reception at the Sugar Mill, with Elizabeth, the owner and GM. The history of this resort is special, and makes it really fun to experience. They had Moko Jumbie dancers, steel drums, and gave you a true sense of the culture of the island. All of our needs were met by the staff, and we really enjoyed getting to meet them, as well as other families that had visited multiple times. The Bucc is a fantastic property, and one that we plan to visit again. Our next trip will include an oceanside room, or a doubloon (look them up) with family. Suggested excursions: Buck Island Snorkeling, Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Tour

I decided to surprise my wife with a 8 day trip to St. Croix for her birthday and spent some time researching places to stay. I saw that The Buccaneer had good review so I went for it. Understand that my wife always takes care of all of our travel plans so this was a first for me. I have to say that the entire week was outstanding to say the least. From the grounds to the room to the food it was excellent. The staff was absolutely excellent. They were genuinely pleasant (Not the fake put on faces that I'm used to in the Northeast). We really had a great time. Would highly recommend this place. If you decide to go make sure you plan the day trip to Buck Island for snorkeling as you won't regret it. Thanks to all at The Buccaneer! See you again soon.

Compared to other resorts in the Caribbean that we've been to for this price point, this resort was about average or slightly below average. WHAT WE LOVED: Mermaid Beach is pristine. Large beach with clear water and sandy bottom. The Grotto has a pool right near ocean beach, so you can enjoy both without a lot of relocation. Snorkeling right off the shore is pretty good and all the equipment is available for free use. The property is on a hill, which provides sweeping views of the ocean, the nearby town, and the well groomed landscaping at the resort. There are many sports/games (including many we did no partake in): basketball, soccer, volleyball, disc golf, chess, corn hole, snorkeling, standup paddleboard, and kayak. Not to mention golf and tennis. If you like to play games, you will have plenty to keep busy with. WHAT WE DID NOT LOVE Guests jockeying with each other for shade. Grotto pool is nice place to spend a hot day, but they need more umbrelllas and places to get shade. There were tables with umbrella holes but no umbrella, and very few chairs get shade at the pool, so there is competition among guests to get preferred spots. Food options were limited. Drinks were costly so guests tended to bring their own booze and even bring their own snacks. It was very expensive to feed young children, who eat very little and simple. All those $14 hot dogs or $8 virgin cocktails will add up.There was no food at the resort after 9:00 PM, which was incredibly inconvenient. We started hoarding food in our room. IF you don't have a car, you have to rely heavily on taxis to escape the resort and experience any kind of variety (or value) in your meals. Food on the island is expensive and not very good compared to other vacation destinations in the Caribbean, We encountered a lot of fried food and very little to no fresh caught seafood despite being surrounded by ocean. Kids Club was a huge disappointment. It was closed for one day (why?) and we were told it was full the following day even though we requested it two days in advance. We felt cheated when we couldn't use this service for 2 of the days we were there. Also, it's just 9 to 3, which limits the activities you can do while your child is being supervised. Many activities on the island start before 9 or end after 3 when you account for travel time. The staff made our last-day planning especially hard because we asked for a late checkout and they said they would get back to us and never did. Then they said we could check out at 12:30, but they locked us out of the room anyway so we had to call to get someone to let us in. We are used to more recently renovated bathrooms and better-working showers (more water pressure, easier to use fixtures)

My mom and I celebrated my birthday at the Buccaneer Hotel in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. This was our first trip to the Caribbean and it was absolutely fabulous! We spent six nights and seven days in an oceanfront room on Grotto Beach at the wonderful Buccaneer Hotel. The staff and owner were so good to us from beginning to end. They were so kind and helpful and provided excellent service and delightful surprises for my birthday. Champagne and spa treatments oh my! The dining choices were excellent including live entertainment and delicious food. The activities were fun and very well organized. There was also a free daily (loaded and beautifully displayed) breakfast buffet fit for kings and queens. Shuttles at the hotel can get you to were you want to go if you prefer not to walk too much. Some places were a little too far for mom. I have to give a special shout-out to the person that drove us around the most, Fitzgerald. He was always smiling, always full of conversation always, making us feel like we were family on the island. We also took two trips to Christiansted to shop and sight-see which is only a few miles from the hotel. If you ever get a chance to visit St. Croix, stay at The Buccaneer Hotel. You will surely enjoy it and have plenty memories when you leave. Which state in a beachfront room at the grotto. All I can say is the views the views The Views. I want to thank all the staff for making my birthday so perfect. You will be seeing me again!
