Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Our family of five joined several other family friends at The Buccaneer each spring break during our kid’s school years. Our children are now married, and we are blessed with three grand children. We decided to return to The Buccaneer with our now family of 11. Everyone had an amazing time. Our grand daughter told us she never wanted to leave. The Buccanneer property and beaches have only gotten better. Their Director of Front Office, Nadia Bougouneau, was very helpful in planning our trip and making sure each experience was amazing. It was like a family reunion with so many of the staff who still have those wonderful smiles at the amazing breakfast buffet, front desk, and bar. The beach wait staff at both incredible beaches pampered us with attentive service and amazing food and drinks. Leila greeted us with a smile and a kind word each day as she made sure our beach experience was relaxing for us and fun for our grand kids. Our family can’t wait to return.

The Buccaneer is the absolute best place to stay in the Virgin Islands. Beautiful rooms, outstanding amenities, pristine beaches and wonderful food. It has it all. And the staff made us feel like we were part of the family. Not many places give you an opportunity to speak one on one with the owner. Elizabeth, thank you for a wonderful vacation. We’ll be back soon.

I feel at a loss to describe the true hospitality and peace we experienced at this hotel. We ended up there completely by accident -- we thought we would be able to get on a chartered plane from St. Croix (we were in St Thomas and unable to go home on commercial flights due to the military operation in Venezuela). That didn't pan out and we stayed in St. Croix for an extra day. The staff, everything, really everything about this place seems almost magical. When our 8 year old daughter (loudly) expressed worry about the safety of our returning flight to nyc, one of the staff members-- I never got her name unfortunately-- hugged her and reassured her so lovingly it brought me to tears. If we return to the Caribbean (we were stuck there for 15 days), we would absolutely stay at The Buccaneer. Thank you.

Beautiful rooms and wonderful staff but the resort has problems. The so-called “private “ beach is stacked 4-deep in plastic chairs because the hotel sells chairs to anyone who shows up for $50 a piece. Meals on the beach can take 2 hours to get. There are signs saying “no cell phones “ but no one enforces it so people play music and talk loudly all around you. At breakfast one day, a big table of non-hotel guests sat down next to us and a little boy took out an iPad and started watching TV at full volume. I asked the server if that was allowed and she said “We used to be able to tell people not to do that but the owners told us that now we’re allowed to say anything”. Dinner prices are very steep and food is mediocre. Tennis is great and there’s a nice jogging path. The views are stunning. This could be a top notch hotel but it needs someone to make it classier and more efficient.

The Buccaneer offers beautiful views, lovely grounds, and warm and friendly staff. Our room had an a/c issue but the staff attended to the problem, followed up to see that all was well, and always put our convenience and comfort first. The room was quiet and clean and I appreciated the tile floors allowing for minimal sand. I would suggest some paper towels and access to a broom/dust pan to even further help with keeping everything fresh. The beach was a great space to relax and the chairs, tables, etc. where in very good condition. The upper pool allowed for a private swim workout that felt luxurious. Leila was helpful in giving advice for swimming in the ocean and Aldrich was very attentive at the front desk. The breakfast staff and quality varied a little, the omelet bar was consistently good. Other items were very good some days and less so others. Overall though, it was nice to have the buffet each day. The dinners were delicious at both the Terrace and Mermaid restaurants. This was our second visit and we look forward to returning!

The Buccaneer in St. Croix was a place of casual elegance. We had an excellent waterfront room. The courteous staff sought to ensure our every need was met. The food was wonderful and the views are breathtaking.
