The Buccaneer in Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands

Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Walk through rustling palms to Mermaid Beach, a protected cove of white sand. Sail to Buck Island, named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic. Spot endangered brown pelicans nesting on this national monument and keep an eye out for green turtles and hawksbill turtles coming ashore in the summertime. Return to the resort for a private candlelit dinner for two inside the ancient limestone sugar mill.

My mother-in-law booked a trip for us to St Croix for our spring break trip. The hotel is excellent and the employees are fantastic to their guests. Everyone from the front desk staff to the hotel maid staff were wonderful to us. The hotel was very quiet and relaxing and we very much enjoyed our time there. You can also see some great wildlife on the resort (iguanas, birds, and sea turtles on the beach on the other side of the golf course). We played both golf and tennis. The golf course is nothing spectacular, but it is very open and the views are great. The tennis courts are a basic hard court, we never had a problem getting a court. The only complaint that I have is that when we went to the tennis house we were greeted by the manager, Gayle and her husband, Stan, who both had been drinking (this happened twice). We ended up going and playing when they left for lunch. Food was fantastic and the view from the main hotel is absolutely amazing (great place/view to start the day with breakfast). Taxis to Christiansted were expensive, so I would suggest renting a car. You can basically see what you need to see in two days time. However, the hotel offers many activities and wonderful food, so you can also warrant staying there the entire time!

Very disappointed. We requested a room change because a group of young women were next to us that stayed up late partying and it was denied. We requested a two hour later checkout and it was denied. And we requested that our group of six be allowed to sit at our table already set table in a nearly empty dining room 15 minutes before our reservation time and it was denied. Instead we had to stand near the bar. I thought they were all reasonable requests that would be accommodated by any other resort. And the restaurant bar manager has no customer service skills. When I questioned why we had to stand instead of sit at an empty table he berated me for questioning his rules. There are many better places to stay that cost the same or less.

The Buccaneer is truly the best place to stay on St. Croix. My family has been to STX several times, but no other resort holds a candle to The Buccaneer. The service is top-notch, and the property is stunning. Absolutely worth the money.

Booked an appt for a massage, body scrub and a mani-pedi. The woman behind the desk was very nice and friendly. My massage was okay, just okay. The masseuse began the body scrub immediately after. I found it odd that she did not allow me to remove my underwear first. Needless to say when I went to shower, my underwear was ruined. The nail tech was grumpy and decided to speed through my service. She never smiled and barely spoke to me. It appeared she was having a tough day. Not friendly at all. When she completed my services she rushed off to catch her ride to class but didn’t say a word. No thank you for coming, no I’m leaving for the day. She simply asked the woman at the front to place a food order for her to pick up and she left. My expectation was just to have a relaxing experience. This was far from it. The reviews posted encouraged me to make an appointment. My expectation was high. I gave an average rating because everything was not poorly done. Maybe your services will be better. Just beware.

My husband and I stayed at the Buccaneer 35 years ago, on our honeymoon. We finally returned back to St. Croix with our family and stayed at their beautiful Beach House. The views are AMAZING!! The moment you walk into the pool area it just takes your breath away! The service we received from Fitzgerald to Francis to Oceanna to Rebecca was just amazing. We experienced a magical dinner at the Sugar Mill, the food was delicious, the server - Jessica was great, even the chef came out and introduced himself! It is a little pricey but well worth it! It was definitely a night we will all remember! If you are looking for a relaxing vacation the Buccaneer in St. Croix gets my vote!!
