The Buccaneer in Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands

Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Walk through rustling palms to Mermaid Beach, a protected cove of white sand. Sail to Buck Island, named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic. Spot endangered brown pelicans nesting on this national monument and keep an eye out for green turtles and hawksbill turtles coming ashore in the summertime. Return to the resort for a private candlelit dinner for two inside the ancient limestone sugar mill.

I'm sitting in my room over looking the ocean while writing this review. I compare every resort to the fabulous Galley Bay in Antigua. The Buccaneer blows Galley Bay out of the water! The fresh food, outstanding service and impeccably cleanliness of the resort are second to none. We originally were booked in the Great House but saw the breath taking view and asked for an upgrade. Within minutes we were on our way to one of the ocean front rooms.....I'm never leaving!

Incredible service. The staff was amazing! Oceana the concierge was truly amazing! She gave us a kid booster for the car rental. She arranged our Hertz delivered to hotel and pick up. She also arranged for my wife to go to our snorkeling tour at Buck Island. Heather the Kids Camp lady watched our son 4 times!!! She was patient and kind to our son and watched in the playroom, beach and two pools. Even fed him. We are so thankful for the Buccaneer not only for the free Kids Camp program and the free breakfast buffet, but we are thankful for their care and attentiveness to all our needs. Front desk is excellent as well. Michael and Krystal were both so nice. They also provided us a microwave for our room. Housekeeping also was excellent. We will come back for sure.

I can't think of a better site or location in the Caribbean. A large old plantation house on top of a hill, surrounded on two sides by a well kept golf course. Three beaches of its own, one with a pool and eight tennis courts. We stayed in a very comfortable beachfront room that was immaculately serviced. There are rooms in the house and there are higher specification rooms and suites at the far end of one of the beaches. The breakfast was as good as it gets with a huge choice. There's a choice of good restaurants and bars so that you can choose the type to suit your day with friendly and professional service . Everybody was very pleasant with a smile or hello when passing and the nightly live music added to the atmosphere. St Croix is not the most visited island but it has more to offer than most.

This was our third time visiting the Buccaneer. Same wonderful staff provided excellent service. Weather perfect and had a large well appointed room overlooking the golf course and water. We have talked about it so much to our friends that another couple went with us on this trip, They also had a great experience. St Croix is a hidden gem with plenty to do [or nothing if you so choose] with plenty of great places to eat.

It's had to believe that a 5 Star resort can be so relaxed and comfortable. This is the place where you leave all your stresses and worries at the gate with the security guard. ( who is awesome!! ) The Buccanneer is one of the few places that I always regret leaving. The grounds, the beach and the surrounding golf course are pure "eye candy". Make sure you make it down to the restaurant down the hill at the beach, order a Cruzan Confussion ( or two ) and the Jerk Chicken Wings. This place is so kid friendly...; with all kind of activities that there will be times when they actually forget about their cell phones!! Plan on renting a car if you plan to explore this beautiful island...; and remember they drive on the left down here. It is concidered rude to walk by another human being without speaking.
