The Buccaneer in Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands

Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Walk through rustling palms to Mermaid Beach, a protected cove of white sand. Sail to Buck Island, named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic. Spot endangered brown pelicans nesting on this national monument and keep an eye out for green turtles and hawksbill turtles coming ashore in the summertime. Return to the resort for a private candlelit dinner for two inside the ancient limestone sugar mill.

Very disappointing experience. I almost never write bad reviews (this is only my second ever) but it's too important to not write one given what happened to us. The staff were lovely and tried to fix things but when we checked on the wedding dinner reservation we thought we had, we were told there was no such reservation (even though I had email correspondence with staff). We were later told they could fit us into the Terrace Room but in two different tables, needed a selected menu rather than individual orders (which is what we had discussed), and that it would cost an additional $3.00 per person to be shuttled from the golf parking lot to the restaurant at 6:00 or 8:30 pm on the day we needed but neither time fit given our wedding time at the church. While I very much appreciate their tying to accommodate something, it was an added stress two days before our wedding that I did not need. I can't imagine what would have happened had I not checked and we just showed up the night of our wedding! Always check and double check. That said, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise...we found an amazing restaurant (Balters) downtown Christiansted who went out of their way to create the perfect setting, perfect dinner and even more perfect memories for us with almost zero lead time!!! Mistakes happen, I get that, but I would not count on the Buccaneer if your event is a very important one.

Great views, great accommodations, great breakfast buffet and very good service. Next time I am in St. Croix certainly I will consider go back to The Buccanneer. This hotel made an excellent mix of the natural ambiance with colonial architecture.

I’m working on St. Croix for hurricane relief. After 4 months of working 100+ hrs a week, I just wanted a relaxing pedicure. Well, apparently that’s too much to ask for because I waited 45 minutes and the one lady who does pedicaures never showed up. Then the manager made me wait to come talk to me and she never showed up! The most unprofessional experience of my life. I will tell everyone not to come here. I wish I could give negative circles.

From the moment we arrived we were treated especially well. My room had been upgraded to an ocean view which was great. The grounds are beautiful although there's quite a bit of walking up and down hills. The beaches are pretty and not over-crowded. The Terrace restaurant is excellent and tries exceptionally hard to please. Ask for a waitress named Pat, she's terrific!

We were there one time for breakfast and one time for dinner. The breakfast was buffet style, fixed priced, and the food was average quality. For dinner, we had to wait more than 1 hour even the restaurant was not full, the service was pretty slow that evening. Food was good, better quality than breakfast one, but still pretty expensive compared the the other options on the island. The atmosphere is nice though, with live music and nice view.
