The Buccaneer in Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands

Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Walk through rustling palms to Mermaid Beach, a protected cove of white sand. Sail to Buck Island, named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic. Spot endangered brown pelicans nesting on this national monument and keep an eye out for green turtles and hawksbill turtles coming ashore in the summertime. Return to the resort for a private candlelit dinner for two inside the ancient limestone sugar mill.

We enjoyed a 3-weeks stay at this wonderful place. The service and all you expect to find in a place like this is more or less perfect. 4 restaurants are top level contributors, but we have to mention the Mermaid on the beach as our favorite. Never before have we been treated at such a professional level at an informal restaurant. The employees were the most charming and clever staff you could ever want to meet. Impressive!! We wish to come back as soon as possible. The problem is the long flight from Europe.

I had an enjoyable stay at The Buccaneer and would recommend the hotel to anyone who travels to St. Croix. It never feels busy and has a lot of charm and excellent, quiet beaches (and, from what I understand, is the nicest hotel on the island). The room I stayed in was outdated but clean (perhaps last renovated in the early '90s), and it took a couple of days to get used to this. The free breakfast was very good; the food and drinks were otherwise good but not amazing (I would recommend dining at local restaurants, rather than eating dinner at the hotel's restaurant). The hotel staff was friendly and helpful, but the level of service is on the casual side, below the level that you would find at a Four Seasons or Ritz-Carlton. If you are looking to be pampered at a five-star resort, go to another island; I don't think you will find that experience on St. Croix.

We spent an afternoon here to enjoy the beach and ate at the restaurant. The staff appeared attentive but I sat looking at my drink in the bar window for 10 minutes before flagging someone down to bring it to me; at least she had them re pour the beer. The food was ok, certainly not up to the prices they charge but I guess thats what you get at a resort restaurant. My daughter's kids burger came with a different side than was listed on the menu but they swapped it out relatively quickly when we brought that to their attention. We wouldn't eat here again but did enjoy the beach and water and would recommend that.

Stayed at the Buccaneer March 4-10 for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. The hotel upgraded us to Luxury Beachside Doubloon with a bottle of champagne. The room looked out over beautiful Mermaid Beach. Great swimming, plus you could snorkel right off the beach. We saw a sea turtle, fish and lots of brain and yellow fan coral.Every morning there was a delicious complimentary breakfast buffet on the Terrace up at the main hotel building. The view was spectacular overlooking the turquoise water and coastline. Also ate at the Terrace for dinner and the food was delicious, especially the Mahi-Mahi Lemon Piccata, just a little pricey for every night. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the Manager's tuesday evening reception with free appetizers and rum punch, and a steel drum band. I also enjoyed the Manager's tour of the property which has owned and operated by the same family for 70 years. Lots of history and beautiful grounds. It's located just 20 minutes from the airport and 5 minutes from Christiansted. Plenty to see and do on the island of St. Croix - snorkeling, hiking, kite boarding. I would definitely rent a car on St. Croix so you can explore the island, but the hotel does offer lots of tours. We look forward to coming back!
