The Buccaneer in Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands

Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Walk through rustling palms to Mermaid Beach, a protected cove of white sand. Sail to Buck Island, named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic. Spot endangered brown pelicans nesting on this national monument and keep an eye out for green turtles and hawksbill turtles coming ashore in the summertime. Return to the resort for a private candlelit dinner for two inside the ancient limestone sugar mill.

This is one of the most awesome vacations we have had (and we love traveling), all thanks to the Buccaneer, given we hardly stepped out of the property! We just didn’t have to- Ms Armstrong and her family has built such an amazing place - warm and beautiful, indeed a world unto itself. It’s big yet intimate. Luxurious yet not over the top. Our dear daughter is just 2.5 yrs old and she formed such an incredible bond with the place and each and every member of the staff. They were all so awesome. But i won’t write any names here - if I forget to name someone it will be a disservice to them. We spent a week there and at the end of it our little girl (and us) thought it’s home! We are vegetarians and they were super accommodative with every request. Also, the breakfast was complimentary yet awesome - which is rare :-) The world is big and we have so many places to see but we definitely see ourselves going back a few more times before our little girl grows up. Can’t wait to play tennis and golf this time! And this time see a little more of St Croix! PS: Hoping for a quick recovery and rehabilitation of US Virgin IslandS!

My friend and I were on a girls trip for a three day weekend and the first thing that impressed us is when we pulled up to the buccaneer we were greeted with a Rum Runner and the staff was so nice and so hospitable. The buildings are really really nice and we received an upgrade to one of the lower rooms that had the balcony in that you can walk outside so that was a nice surprise also. The food was pretty decent although not much of a choice and variety and the service in the Terrace for dinner was really slow. I did have an amazing quinoa and kale salad though but for$16 you would have thought there might have been just a little bit more LOL. Lying on the beach and watching the sunset over the Caribbean just can't be beat. The mermaid Beach to us is the best one unless you want to hang out in the pool. The mermaid restaurant was very good we had lunch and then the last night we were there they had a grill menu and we had a delicious filet mignon. The breakfast buffet is out of this world with just about everything you could ever want There is one little man who is the sweetest and I wish I would have gotten his name but he wished us a Happy Mother's Day and he's just so happy all the time. I do wish they had in the lobby some kind of vending machines or a little store that was open for late night snacks and drinks that would be an added bonus. We had a wonderful stay would definitely go back. I would recommend renting a car for sure if you think you can handle driving on the left side of the road because that was pretty interesting lol. I would recommend this Resort for singles, couples and families because there seems to be a lot to do for kids too.

The Buccaneer is a beautiful hotel - January 2018 we stayed in an ocean front room, with our own private terrace, steps away from the beach. The service was mostly very good - however at dinner we felt they did not have enough staff. This is probably not their fault, though, because the US and British Virgins had undergone the horrible hurricanes just a few months' prior. I think the US and British resorts that were able to get their resorts back in shape might have been surprised at the number of people who were willing to venture back and spend their vacation dollars. However, they did a great job - actually the suffered far fewer than the other resorts, and they got the hotel back to tip top shape. Breakfast every morning had lots of choices, from omelettes to order and the buffet. We played golf on their course - -remember to wear collared shirts, my hubby forgot and we had to buy one for him. It was beautiful, and several of the holes are oceanfront, We ate dinner out in the town three nights, and the hotel will order the taxi for you . The restaurant will call the taxi back for your return, and usually the first taxi will request you to call him back for the return. We took the Seaplane for transportation back and forth, rather than the ferry from St. Thomas. The ferry ride is about 4 hours , if I recall, and I had just spent 7 days on a 50' catamaran, and was worried about being seasick. The seaplane is very fast - about 30 minutes if I recall correctly. Also, a nice adventure, as you fly low enough to enjoy the beautiful turquoise water. We would definitely go back to the Buccanneer

My now husband & I chose the Buccaneer to stay in for our Honeymoon due to its Beautiful Property, Excellent Reviews & love of the History of the Buccaneer. We started planning our wedding & honeymoon there back in August before the storm hit the Island. We wanted to get married in their Sugar Mill but when I contacted Erin about that I was told that there was a wedding already scheduled for the date that I wanted and they only did 1 wedding a day on the property. I was offered other dates but I wasn't willing to change my date. So with that understanding we then asked if we could do the private wedding dinner in the Sugar Mill. It was just my Husband & I going for the wedding. So, that was able to be accomidated on our wedding day. Prior to our arrival I had been in touch back and forth with E-mails with the Conceirge Joel. I had Emailed him my tentative itinary for our Honeymoon week and asked if he had any other suggestions of what we should do. He informed me that if I wanted him to he could schedule everything for us as well as take care of any costs. Joel and I spoke on the phone on a Saturday a couple weeks before our arrival and we went over the itinary, cost, provided him with my CC info. By the time I got up that night at 8 to get ready for work I had a E-mail from Joel with everything confirmed a re-typed itinary. Everything was set up for us. I didn't have to make all the phone calls myself. He made everything very easy for us. Fast forward to our arrival 3 days before our wedding. We were greeted by the desk staff, given some punch, room was upgraded, and shown to our room. Room was Beautiful, Spacious, and right next to Mermaid Beach with a view of the Ocean. Had a nice little welcome card from the Manager Elizabeth, very personalized. We were approached on our 2nd day there while meeting with our officiant for the wedding by Nadia asking as to why we were not having our wedding on the property of the Buccaneer. I explained that originally we wanted to have it there at the Sugar Mill but were told there was already a wedding for that day. Fast forward a hour later and we were approached by Nadia again and were told that if we wanted to have our wedding in the Sugar Mill they could accommidate that. My husband about jumped out of his chair he was so excited to hear that. So, on Sunday my Husband & I were married inside the Sugar Mill with a Beautiful view looking over the property of the Buccaneer. Followed by our private wedding dinner which was AMAZING!! Genevieve was our waitress for this dinner and she did an outstanding job setting everything up, serving us, giving us our private time, but checking on us to make sure we didn't need anything, acting as a photographer documenting our wedding dinner for us. I just cant say enough wonderful things about her. She really made our wedding night dinner very memorable & perfect for us. Our Honeymoon week was great there, we got to know everyone, they got to know us. We were addressed each morning at breakfast and asked how our 1st week of marriage was treating us, what our plans were for the day. Each morning we were greeted by Melrose a breath of fresh air. Very up beat man, gracious, appreciative of his job. Really grew found of him. My husband got really bad sunburn out on the all day Buck Island trip & Oceana approached him at the owners reception evening and asked him if he wanted some fresh Aloha plant brought to our room to help with the sunburn. By the time we arrived back in our room it was in there waiting for us. One night we were looking for a place to eat went to the front desk had a few places recommended to us, we picked one the desk called and made us a reservation for dinner. If you have the time to do the Owners Welcome Reception and the Tour the next day do it. We did and we are so glad we did. You won't regret it. Our wedding at the Buccaneer was perfect as well as our wedding dinner. Our stay was relaxing, accomidating. The staff was very friendly, pleasant, and really got to know you. We were there from the Thursday before our wedding to the following Saturday and we are planning on returning for our 5 year Anniversary. We can't say enough good things about the Buccaneer. I promise you will not regret staying there, or even getting married there if you are planning that as well.
