The Buccaneer in Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands

Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Walk through rustling palms to Mermaid Beach, a protected cove of white sand. Sail to Buck Island, named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic. Spot endangered brown pelicans nesting on this national monument and keep an eye out for green turtles and hawksbill turtles coming ashore in the summertime. Return to the resort for a private candlelit dinner for two inside the ancient limestone sugar mill.

We stayed with our family of 9 at the Buccaneer Hotel's Beach House this February/ March for 2 weeks. It is our 4th year renting this fabulous property. It is a beautiful Curzian property overlooking the ocean with total privacy. Terraces on all sides of the house so you can be in or out of the sun at any time of the day. There is a beautiful beach minutes from the house or the hotel's beach about a 10 min. walk. Plus a large private pool with pool toys galore. The staff at the Buccaneer is the best we have seen anywhere in the Carribean, and we have spent the last 40yrs traveling around, we still come back to St Croix. They are friendly and helpful and all around lovely people. Breakfast brunch at the hotel, included in the rental, is NOT to be missed! The omelet lady makes omlets, your way, as light as crepes, besides the huge array of any kind of breakfast food you can think of. The staff is equally lovely as the people who take care of the house.. All in all, it is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather and awesome view from the house. We have even had a chef arranged by the hotel cook in for us on several nights so we can eat outside on the terrace and overlook the lights of Christiansted. It doesn't get any better!!!!

We enjoyed a 3-weeks stay at this wonderful place. The service and all you expect to find in a place like this is more or less perfect. 4 restaurants are top level contributors, but we have to mention the Mermaid on the beach as our favorite. Never before have we been treated at such a professional level at an informal restaurant. The employees were the most charming and clever staff you could ever want to meet. Impressive!! We wish to come back as soon as possible. The problem is the long flight from Europe.

I had an enjoyable stay at The Buccaneer and would recommend the hotel to anyone who travels to St. Croix. It never feels busy and has a lot of charm and excellent, quiet beaches (and, from what I understand, is the nicest hotel on the island). The room I stayed in was outdated but clean (perhaps last renovated in the early '90s), and it took a couple of days to get used to this. The free breakfast was very good; the food and drinks were otherwise good but not amazing (I would recommend dining at local restaurants, rather than eating dinner at the hotel's restaurant). The hotel staff was friendly and helpful, but the level of service is on the casual side, below the level that you would find at a Four Seasons or Ritz-Carlton. If you are looking to be pampered at a five-star resort, go to another island; I don't think you will find that experience on St. Croix.

We spent an afternoon here to enjoy the beach and ate at the restaurant. The staff appeared attentive but I sat looking at my drink in the bar window for 10 minutes before flagging someone down to bring it to me; at least she had them re pour the beer. The food was ok, certainly not up to the prices they charge but I guess thats what you get at a resort restaurant. My daughter's kids burger came with a different side than was listed on the menu but they swapped it out relatively quickly when we brought that to their attention. We wouldn't eat here again but did enjoy the beach and water and would recommend that.

Everything was top notch from top to bottom. All the staff members were very helpful and courteous. The food was great. The beaches, golf course, and property all outstanding! We look forward to going back next year for our 1st of many anniversaries
