The Buccaneer in Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands

Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Walk through rustling palms to Mermaid Beach, a protected cove of white sand. Sail to Buck Island, named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic. Spot endangered brown pelicans nesting on this national monument and keep an eye out for green turtles and hawksbill turtles coming ashore in the summertime. Return to the resort for a private candlelit dinner for two inside the ancient limestone sugar mill.

My husband and I stayed at the Buccaneer 35 years ago, on our honeymoon. We finally returned back to St. Croix with our family and stayed at their beautiful Beach House. The views are AMAZING!! The moment you walk into the pool area it just takes your breath away! The service we received from Fitzgerald to Francis to Oceanna to Rebecca was just amazing. We experienced a magical dinner at the Sugar Mill, the food was delicious, the server - Jessica was great, even the chef came out and introduced himself! It is a little pricey but well worth it! It was definitely a night we will all remember! If you are looking for a relaxing vacation the Buccaneer in St. Croix gets my vote!!

This is our second trip to The Buccaneer for spring break. We have three children 13, 10 and 7. Cannot recommend enough. Beautiful, well maintained property. Safe....plenty for the kids to do. Great breakfast buffet and nightly entertainment. Friendly staff. We were here for a week and I cannot think of anything I didn't like. My husband and I did yoga one day, we played tennis one day.....we snorkeled, played bocce, cornhole....drank wine on our porch. For me, this vacation is a 10. I don't know what else you could want for your family. Hopefully, we will be back next year.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Buccaneer. The reservation staff was very easy to work with and they went overboard to help arrange our activities before we arrived. We spent a lot of time on the tennis courts and Gayle and Stan were great to work with. The tennis pro, Roman, was very friendly and experienced and made our time on the court fun and rewarding. The property is gorgeous, with beautiful beaches. As another review stated, it is a large complex so be prepared to walk to and from restaurants/beaches. They will arrange transportation but we preferred to walk. The pool is a little small but it was never crowded. In fact, the resort never felt crowded at all, even though I knew they were fully booked. The service in the restaurants was slow, but the food was good. I agree with another review that it would be nice to have once easy kid friendly option that is open all the time. I swear, my kids would eat chicken nuggets and pizza every day and be happy - it really doesn't have to be fancy! The kids got very tired when we spent over 2 hours at dinner. One of our wait staff at the Mermaid Beach, Marlon, was absolutely fantastic. He was friendly, fun, and boy did he hustle. That night, we had very good service! We went to the managers reception on Tuesday which was great, and also the walking tour with owner Elizabeth Armstrong to learn the history of the property. Both were wonderful touches that you would not get at other resorts. Bar staff was excellent. I am not usually a bar goer, but the view was worth it and it was nice to sit in the open air with a nice view and have a glass of wine. All and all, the Buccaneer is a fantastic resort and we had a great spring break trip.

Such a great honeymoon at The Buccaneer! Although we booked a room in the Great House, we were immediately upgraded to an ocean front room upon arrival. The resort is beautiful and the staff is first class. We could not have scripted a better week, and we can't wait to come back!!!

This was our first visit to St. Croix and The Buccaneer resort and what a great 9 days it turned out to be. This large resort area with scenic views has all the activities one could ask for including a lovely pool area, great beach access, 18 hole golf course , tennis facility, open air dining and complete support staff. It is obvious that the ownership has taken great pains to make sure your stay is a memorable one. What made our stay special was the excellent staff, well trained and friendly, encountered at the main desk, concierge desk, restaurant and bar staff, room and activities attendants. We have been visiting the Caribbean islands for over 25 years and I can say that our stay at the Buccaneer was a "highlight"
