The Buccaneer in Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands

Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Walk through rustling palms to Mermaid Beach, a protected cove of white sand. Sail to Buck Island, named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic. Spot endangered brown pelicans nesting on this national monument and keep an eye out for green turtles and hawksbill turtles coming ashore in the summertime. Return to the resort for a private candlelit dinner for two inside the ancient limestone sugar mill.

Checked in and was greeted with rum punch while we waited for our rooms. There are 2 restaurants on the property that are both delicious. One is on the beach and can be delivered to you on the sand. Took out a kayak on the beach at sunset. It was gorgeous and no charge. Noticed tennis courts and a spa, but no time to use either facility. Enjoyed washing up with BeeKind products. Available for purchase at gift shop.

The Buc was a good value for the vacation $. Food was a little pricey, but excellent. Don't mind paying when the quality is so high. All three meals and all three restaurants were exceptional. Service was a bit island slow, but that is generally to be expected. Rooms were recently remodeled and very nice. Beach is average and water is average, not the exceptional water and beach you see on Buck Island (definitely worth the excursion). The beach is down quite a hill from the main hotel, but they had a shuttle service that was free and very prompt, never had to wait more than a minute or two. Very laid back and relaxing.

What a wonderful, family-friendly facility. Complimentary breakfast with plenty of choices, including the ability to order made-to-order pancakes, omelettes and eggs. Be sure to say hello to Melrose - he will make your day! Plenty of things to do on-site including free owner's reception with local performers, free informative tour/history of the property and island (highly recommended), free snorkel/paddleboard/kayak lessons - be sure to take advantage of the free tour of the reef. We had excellent food at all on-site restaurants and every night there was some form of free entertainment - fire dancers, steel pan players, jazz band. Very comfortable, very clean accommodations. Outstanding staff. I loved that the hotel offered bug spray at all locations (there are a lot of small biting bugs all over the entire island). I brought bug wipes. Use the wipes and then use the spray. There were no bedbugs or cockroaches - just the small no-see-ums. It's not too hard to learn how to drive on the left, so rent a car. Taxis from the hotel can be very expensive and one or two taxi trips can cost more than a week's car rental. Be sure to enjoy the local restaurants, but check what their hours are before heading out. Try Harvey's, The Cast Iron Pot and Chicken Shack. Thank you to everyone at The Buccaneer for giving us such wonderful memories!

We are about to check out from a fabulous 6 night stay. We had a deluxe oceanfront room, very spacious and suited our family of 4 (mom, dad, and two teens). The grounds and the views are gorgeous! The rooms are not on par with a luxury hotel --but! The service has been outstanding and far exceeds the service we've received at more luxurious hotels. The amenities are great, too. Very accommodating and friendly. We hope to return!
