Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Walk through rustling palms to Mermaid Beach, a protected cove of white sand. Sail to Buck Island, named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic. Spot endangered brown pelicans nesting on this national monument and keep an eye out for green turtles and hawksbill turtles coming ashore in the summertime. Return to the resort for a private candlelit dinner for two inside the ancient limestone sugar mill.

I have used Tripadvisor for several years now but this is my very first review. We stayed at the Beach House from July 29 - August 5. We Had our family of 6 (4 children 19,17,16,10) and 3 Grandparents. We occupied 5 of the 6 bedrooms available. We have rented several beach houses in NJ and The Outer Banks over the years so we decided to do something different and go to an island. I Compared the cost of what we pay for a ocean front beach house with a pool or staying at a hotel and needing 4-5 rooms at $250 -400 a piece per room vs the Beach House at the Buccaneer....I thought it has to be pretty close. The only difference would be airfare. Advice - if you are traveling for a week with a group to an island and would end up reserving 3-6 ocean front rooms then I would definitely compare that cost to renting the Beach House. You have the Beach House/with pool and then all the amenities of the resort included -a daily breakfast which was amazing, all access to snorkel equipment, kayaks, basketball, volleyball and etc. Let alone the beautiful, crystal clear, warm water. Also included in the price was a hertz van rental which we used to explore the island and dinners. We went to the local grocery store and picked up snacks and food for lunches. We also used the van to go to the other side of the resort when we got lazy or called for a local shuttle when our group was separated. Otherwise, it was a short walk from the Beach House to the Mermaid Beach, snorkeling at the reef off the beach and water sports. We really enjoyed the snorkeling at Mermaid Beach and even more so at the Grotto Beach. On the map it looks like it's really far but it really isn't a bad walk behind the 3rd green on the golf course. The Beach House was amazing and exceeded our expectations. During our stay there was always a constant breeze in front of the house which was wonderful. The views were unbelievable and pictures don't do it justice. It's just surreal! I could go on and on about the views from the pool, in front of the house, from the Buck Island suite shower and balcony..,it's like fantasy island. I'm glad we packed our binoculars to look at the passing boats, Christiansted, and sea turtles that we could see from the house. We had fun watching and waiving to the excursion boats taking people to and from Buck Island. The great room with kitchen was our gathering place where we played games at night. There was plenty of shade by the pool for getting some relief from the sun. The Buck Island Suite was something else and all the other rooms were large and comfortable. A special shout out to Rebecca, Heather, and Marlon. Rebecca who was fantastic to work with and helped us every step of the way with our trip. I'm not sure if she is the only one who handles reserving the Beach House but make sure to ask for her when you call up to make a reservation. She also remembered my son's birthday and surprised him with a card and gift in his room. Heather at the concierge desk who scheduled dinner reservations, Buck Island, My girls Horse Back riding, and golf. Marlon our favorite waiter at The Mermaid restaurant who was great and fun to joke with. He surprised my son with a birthday cake and song (Rebecca must have relayed the secret and surprised us all). Lastly I would like to thank Elizabeth the owner of the resort. She greeted us and everyone else who attended the weekly owners reception and cocktail hour. In my opinion, it's very rare in today's world to have the owner of a business so actively involved and willing to take the time to hold such a reception and then personally greet every person there and have a conversation with them. You can tell it trickles down to all the employees because everyone is very friendly and they do whatever they can to make your stay unbelievable and wanting to come back. That's what makes this place so special....We'll definitely be back!

This was a girls get away trip, and upon check in we were beyond thrilled to be upgraded to beach front rooms! The rooms are stunning with killer views! Breakfast was included in our package and was everything you wanted and more! The servers greeted you with a smile all the time. We took the history/nature tour with Elizabeth and she is a wealth of information. This is a first class hotel and I would stay here again.

From the pre-trip call with the concierge, to the incredible room that awaited us- The Buccaneer will exceed any expectation you may have. "Melrose" is one of the most humble, kind, friendly, happy, courteous - members of the staff (which ALL represent) The Buccaneer as if "they" were the owner. Fantastic HR to hire such dedicated workers who work very hard to make your experience the best it possibly can be. The grounds are breathtaking, the quality of everything you experience - will not disappoint you. The Buccaneer is only 5 minutes or so from downtown Christiansted - which is a real plus. We can't wait to come back, and definitely - we will book again at The Buccaneer.

Hotel is badly in need of a touch up. Best hotel on Island but in context of today's top resorts, only a 3 star in my opinion. Cottages run down, lobby outdated. Restaurant has beautiful views and excellent food. Restaurant and Bar are clearly the highlight of this resort.

We arrived at the Buccaneer and were disappointed with our room as the A/C was not working well. The front desk quickly upgraded us to another room after the repair technician could not fix the problem. The front desk staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful from check in through check out. The wait staff, servers and cooks all went above and beyond to ensure all guests needs were met and that they had an enjoyable time. Five star service all the way around!
