About the Hotel

Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Unbelievable Experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 9 hours ago

A magical experience in St. Croix. My wife and I took our two teenagers to the resort. First class service and facilities. The most friendly hotel staff I can recall. By the end of the week everyone knew our names. Food was phenomenal. Beautiful views from everywhere. We will be returning.

perfect for a quick getaway

We came here from Fort Lauderdale for Easter weekend not knowing what to expect, and I must say this resort was really fantastic! The beaches were well kept, the staff very friendly and overall the resort was well cared for and maintained. It had character, which was very nice to see. Our family got an upgrade to a fantastic beachside room for our anniversary, which was a nice touch as well. The resort is expansive, but not too big. Although we traveled on a busy weekend the Buccaneer did not feel crowded. Overall it was an outstanding experience!

Can’t wait return!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

We’ve had a wonderful time on two trips to the awesome Buccaneer Hotel this year, and can’t wait to return again this summer. Our highlights always include the huge breakfast buffet with Phylis, Delma and all the other amazing servers. We also enjoy the music on the terrace by world-class guitarist, Steve Katz. The Hamilton cocktail party on the terrace is a great new addition to the many activities offered at the Buccaneer. The welcome cocktail party with hotel owner, Elizabeth Armstrong, is always a favorite and Joel’s Buccaneer history and nature tour is fabulous. The beach service with Myra could not be better. Morning walks around the gorgeous property are also fantastic. And the room accommodations, amenities, and housekeeping service are all superb. In addition to the hotel’s activities and services, our family also enjoyed a horseback riding excursion with the Crucian Cowgirls through the rain forest and on the ocean shore. We particularly enjoyed the snorkeling tour with Mermaid Adventures at the spectacular Fredericksted pier and the Dorsch beach. We followed many turtles and saw rays and sea horses. There are so many wonderful places to visit, including Point Udall, the Botanical Gardens, and strolling the Christiansted boardwalk. If you are considering a trip to St. Croix, we highly recommend making the Buccaneer your home base. This wonderful family-run hotel has become our home away from home and we always thoroughly enjoy our stays there.

Overpriced and terrible service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Terrible. Slow service and rude employees throughout the resort. Everything is incredibly spread out, and getting to and from the beach/pool areas and back to your room is difficult. Also, everything on the resort is ridiculously overpriced. Food and drinks are expensive and not worth your time. The island is beautiful but don’t stay at this resort.

Wonderful family spring break at the Buccaneer!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

There are plenty of great and descriptive reviews of the Buccaneer here already, but here are some of our tips from spending a week there with our teenage sons. 1) The website can be a little confusing regarding dinning, but dinner is at the Terrace Wed-Sun and at the Mermaid on the beach Mon-Tue. The Terrace is great, but I would plan on doing it just once during your stay (somewhat limited menu). Mermaid is a different menu each of the two nights and worth trying both. Entertainment is great and the location on the beach is fun. Load up on the included breakfast and keep lunch light. Make reservations for dinner in advance either at the resort or in town. While the resort and Christiansted never felt crowded, all the good restaurants fill up and won't have spots even a couple days in advance 2) If you play tennis, plan to play at the Buccaneer! It is a fantastic facility with a great pro (Dean). There is a round robin Saturday morning and clinics Tue and Wed mornings. Both are a mix of guests and local members and a great way to socialize and get in some exercise 3) The golf course is very unique and a lot of fun. It can get expensive if you play multiple days, but it is one of those courses that one day gives you your best round of the year and the next makes you think you should give up golf. It isn't long, but rewards you when you are playing well and can be sneaky hard when things start coming apart. Our room was wonderful, it was an Ocean View Room which is high up on the ridge overlooking the ocean. We loved it and didn't mind the walk down to the beach, but if you want to be on the water you are going to have to pay more for a room that specifically says ocean or beachfront. The Mermaid Beach is wonderful, staff is great, beach and water are great and the amenities are great. It can get a little louder with families or groups enjoying a few cocktails, so if you want something quieter head over to the Grotto Beach and pool. We rented a car which made getting around much easier. We saw multiple guests struggle with getting taxis and beware there is a $50 surcharge for taxis after 9:30pm. Check the cruise ship schedule for Frederiksted and head over there when there isn't a ship in and snorkel along the pier. We saw tons of sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, sting rays and plenty of fish. You just walk in from the small beach next to the pier. Sandy Point is worth a visit if you are luck enough to be there when it is open. Definitely include a half-day trip to Buck Island.

The Buccaneer in St. Croix was a place of casual elegance. We had an excellent waterfront room. The courteous staff sought to ensure our every need was met. The food was wonderful and the views are breathtaking.
