Cocos Hotel in Saint John's, Antigua and Barbuda

Owned by native Antiguans, the 30 cottages at Cocos Hotel roost on a cliff and overlook iridescently clear waters, where deep blues and minty greens shimmer in streaks on the horizon. The best way to enjoy the view is swinging in a hammock suspended from the roof of each cottage’s rustic terrace, or drifting to sleep on the netting-enveloped princess bed. Chef Pam Clay's West Indian take on Tuscan cuisine attracts a local following.

Journey by boat to Cade's Reef to snorkel among manta rays, spiny lobsters and neon-colored tropical fish. Return to a lounge chair on a secluded beach and let the tide roll over your feet. Sip on a rum and Coke from your cottage’s stocked minibar. At an oceanfront table lit by candles, dine on grilled strawberry red snapper in a tomato Creole sauce.

We were booked to stay here but asked to move within a couple of hours. On arrival you are dropped off a a tiny rundown shack, the welcome was really poor and we felt left to our own devices. Cocos have a photo of their pool on the website, well David Baily must have taken it as in reality it was murky and I certainly would not have got in it, it had two very tired old wooden chairs by it and thats all. The beach at the front of the hotel is rather small and adjacent to a larger beach which isn't shown in the photos so its not quite as personal as they make it look. The beach to left of the property is a bit of a hike, we trundled there to have a drink at the bar but there was no one serving, lovely beach but the back of it looks like a building site, all in all the place really needs a lot of love and attention. I can't comment on the food as we left. I understand sometimes you need to do work to enhance the property but we felt we should have been told and we felt the photos were misleading. The views are super. This place has lots of good reviews so I don't want to put anyone off but having stayed at many other hotels in Antigua we didn't feel this was up to par.

Arrival at property is not its best view and does not do the hotel justice. Great staff and good food and well kept rooms on an all-inclusive basis more than make up for the look of the hotel. The recent weather has stripped away some of the natural vegetation and there is some redecoration required. There are a few new rooms being constructed but I don't think the extra numbers of guests will change the very personable approach of the staff. The hotel is set on a hill so there is quite a bit of hill-climbing to get around the property. The interior of our room was perfectly fine, occasionally water was in short supply at peak periods but to be expected from a small hotel in the country. Loved the outdoor showers. Great views out to sea. Recommend room 18 despite the hill-climb. The beaches either side of the hotel are perfect, fine white sand with beach bars. They are public beaches so there are some beach vendors but we had no issues if we said "not today thank-you". The menus at the restaurant for dinner are limited in choice but really well cooked, presented and served. Dietary requirements are accommodated but the short menu sometimes limits what can be done, the staff worked hard with obvious concern for the guest's satisfaction. Evening entertainment was varied and suited the relaxed vibe Thoroughly recommend Cocos Hotel for a relaxing Caribbean holiday in a real rustic property with great staff. Would love to return.

I arrived at Coco's after spending a week at another resort which showed me how average the stay at the previous hotel was after my experience at Coco's. it is a friendly and intimate hotel with a small number of guest making it have a community feel, with everyone getting to know everyone. The staff are friendly and very helpful with brilliant customer service, with little touches like remembering your 'usual' drink, the barmen in the beach bar is fantastic. Reception make you feel welcome soon as you arrive. once entering your room you are met with exceptional views, each cottages are very unique and elegant with plenty of character. Being one with nature would help if staying at this resort as there is plenty of insects and lizards on the pathways leading to the rooms (which is expected and normal in this kind of terrain and heat), the rooms however are clean and tidy with daily house keeping with daily mini bar refill which is included in the price. i would recommend this hotel and i would return as there is nothing i can fault about this resort. The staff, rooms, food, drinks and beach is all at a high standard.

As I write this review, I am sitting on my balcony at Cocos. The view is spectacular. It's true, this is not a hotel for everyone. If you have mobility issues, if you are looking for a party place, if you want a big fancy resort, don't come here. However, if you like rustic elegance, if you want quiet and relaxation, if you appreciate cottage life, by all means get on a plane and come on over. Yes it's small, yes the food choices are more limited, no there aren't many activities...that's the whole point of this place. I feel as if I'm hanging out at a friend's cottage. Every meal has had at least one fish, one meat and one veg choice. Every meal offers appetizers, soup, main course and desserts. A smaller kitchen and a smaller resort means dishes that are "home cooked" rather than big repetitive buffets of commercially over cooked, greasy foods. I've yet to be disappointed at Cocos. The staff is above average in my opinion. All have greeted us and treated us like friends or family. As hurricane Maria was looming, we had to be displaced for a few nights to safer ground. They worked tirelessly to organize and prepare and we came back to open arms and hugs. I have nothing but praise for them all. I would not hesitate to come back. I most likely will. The people of the Caribbean have had a particularly difficult hurricane season. Please help their economy and rebuilding by coming and spending your vacation dollars or euros. If you can, bring an extra suitcase of hurricane relief supplies. Many airlines are waving the extra bag fees for humanitarian donations, most consulate websites have lists of supplies needed and most hotels will take care of forwarding these to shelters. Happy travels.
