Cocos Hotel in Saint John's, Antigua and Barbuda

Owned by native Antiguans, the 30 cottages at Cocos Hotel roost on a cliff and overlook iridescently clear waters, where deep blues and minty greens shimmer in streaks on the horizon. The best way to enjoy the view is swinging in a hammock suspended from the roof of each cottage’s rustic terrace, or drifting to sleep on the netting-enveloped princess bed. Chef Pam Clay's West Indian take on Tuscan cuisine attracts a local following.

Journey by boat to Cade's Reef to snorkel among manta rays, spiny lobsters and neon-colored tropical fish. Return to a lounge chair on a secluded beach and let the tide roll over your feet. Sip on a rum and Coke from your cottage’s stocked minibar. At an oceanfront table lit by candles, dine on grilled strawberry red snapper in a tomato Creole sauce.

Cocos' promise on their website “… to make your stay one that you will always treasure and remember” was absolutely true for us! We’ve traveled the Caribbean extensively and this is the most unique and magical place we’ve ever stayed at.

We're delighted we splurged on a Sunset Pool Cottage (#35). We appreciated the casual yet elegant decor, beyond amazing outdoor shower, spectacular deck which became a lovely retreat where we enjoyed breathtaking views of brilliant sunsets, turquoise waters, moon phases, twinkly stars, distant islands, etc. and roomy and cool yet refreshing infinity pool. The circuitous route to access our cottage only accentuated the welcome seclusion. The A/C and WiFi were welcome amenities and glad there's no TV. The beaches on either side of Cocos are among the best on the island ... large, soft and scenic. The surf is fairly calm so easy to swim in. There were ample wooden chaises/cushions and towels readily available. The beach bars (the main one on Jolly Beach and smaller one on the beach on the other side of the property) make it easy to grab a beverage, relax and enjoy the view. The grounds are lush and well maintained. Keep your eyes open for tree frogs, hermit crabs, mongoose and cats along the way. The tree frogs' serenade every night was lovely. Our first all inclusive experience brought a bit of concern about eating our meals at one place. They were quickly quelled. The open air setting must be the most scenic on the island. The service is attentive and accommodating and the food was abundant, interesting and delicious at every meal. We only ate offsite when we were out on adventures. We appreciated EVERYTHING about the hard working staff (too many to name but we remember you all!) ... especially their welcoming smiles and kind, generous spirits that made it feel like home. Practical tips/insights: This is a charming, rustic, unique property. We loved it! That said, it's definitely not for those who want a sleek, luxury, hip vibe. The public spaces are all open air and relaxed which we savored but some might not appreciate. It's a cozy place so you'll see the other guests often but everyone is respectful and gives you space if you choose. We used bug spray at all times since there are lots of "no-see-ums" but they never ruined the experience. We never found the hill (that makes the location unique) to be an issue but definitely invigorating. Several times, especially while at dinner, quick downpours blew through. It can make the stone walkway back up to the accommodations a bit slick so be careful. We just took our shoes off and walked back barefoot which felt safer.

This place is amazing. My wife and I wanted to go somewhere that was "off the beaten path" and not a tourist trap. My wife wanted "blue water". Cocos gave us as close to perfection as we could have hoped for. I'm going to try to keep this short and to bullet points, so here we go... -The view is unbelievable. We were still telling ourselves that when we walked to checkout. - We stayed in cabin 31.... Try to get cabin 31 (see pictures) -There is more food than you need. Seriously, I was turning down food and gained weight on this trip. - The entire staff is great. This is a small place so you will see the same people every day. They are all great. - There are 2 beaches. The sand is a soft white powder. Pretty much what you imagine when you think "walking the beach". The tide is minimal, about 1 foot difference during the day. - The water. I still can't believe it was real. - Vendors. The beaches are public so there are vendors. We booked everything through Christine at guest services and she was extremely helpful. - Climbing. If you can't walk up 3 flights of stairs, this place isn't for you. No matter what room you are in this is a requirement. Good for walking off those big meals, though (that's what I kept telling myself). - Nature. Bring bug spray. There are mosquitos. Also recommend headphones if you are a light sleeper. There is plenty of ambient noise after sunset. - Verdict. We didn't want to leave. I know sometimes you say that, but really. We look back at pictures now wishing we were there. Please, do your homework and know what you are getting. This isn't Sandals, a spring break haven, or a "luxury resort" where you are pampered. Cocos is the perfect tropical getaway where you can bask in the environment, have everything you can possibly need, and leave thinking it was all a dream.

It was my first time visiting Caribbean sea and culture. It was the most wonderful memorable time for my husband and I since we have been married. The weather was perfect and the hotel was in a perfect location and we enjoyed our stay more than we could expect. If you like water and if you like quiet and peaceful time visit Antigua; and for the most comfort and authenticity of Caribbean life we recommend Cocos hotel rather than other American inspired/ too ordinary/ too luxurious hotels. and expect super warm and friendly staff that make your stay even more pleasant.

We booked the Sunset Pool Cottage and I must say it had the best views of any resort that I have ever stayed in. The plunge pool was amazing and we loved sitting out there and watching the sunsets. The room was roomy and comfortable and the outside showers were a nice treat. The staff at CoCos is easily the friendliest and most accommodating staff ever. Our trip there was delayed twice (hurricane and fire at ATL airport) but they were great about moving our reservations around to still help us enjoy our full 5 day vacation there. Special shout out to Loreen, Kerry Ann and Anizia for the excellent care that they took of us. Their great service made our trip extra special. This place is designed for strict relaxation and is off the grid, so you will love it if you can deal with a few things. First, there is no TV on the resort and no WIFI in the rooms. I had to sit by the bar with my laptop to stream NBA games on X-Mas day. After a few days, we got really bored because we are active people and there is not much to do. The food is just OK, but the drinks are amazing. No bars on the beach and no beach service, so you'll have to take drinks and food out there with you. There is only one restaurant, so dining options are very limited and the same thing is usually served each day. No room service either, so if you get hungry during the day you will have to walk down to the restaurant and hope you catch lunch or dinner. The mosquitoes are horrible, so bring plenty of repellent. We couldn't sit outside on our patio after dark because they were so bad. If you're not in decent shape, this is not the place for you. The rooms are on the side of a cliff, so there is quite a long walk uphill to get to the cottages. Overall, this is a perfect place if all you want to do is rest and relax. However, probably not worth $800-$1000 per night unless they provide more amenities (WIFI, room service, beach service, etc.) and dining options.

We stayed for 3 nights over new years and it was lovely. The hotel is very geared towards couples and relaxation. There really isn’t anything to do apart from sunbath and swim in the sea. We had a pool sunset apartment and it was lovely getting a bottle of champagne, sitting the pool and watching the sunset. The rooms are basic, no TV, no frills and it was fun having the shower outside. It was lovely for 3 days, but as we are both active people, any longer and we would of been seriously bored. The food is great, althou at times it is served lukewarm. Variety small, but always a meat, fish, vegetation choice. The drinks are free flowing and the service always friendly. A perfect location for a romantic break away or just some serious R&R.
